An Odd Louis Jacobs.re- siding about 4 miles east of this city, left at THE NEWS office this morning a very peculiar hen egg. It is of a very dark color.has a thick shell and resembles a gourd in shape. Petition for petition was yesterday filed before Governor Lloyd for pardon in the case of Calvin Grimea, convicted a few weeks ago in the Circuit court for this county for forgery and sentenced to the penitentiary for fire years. Asking for a Divorce. In Wash- ingtonjast week a suit for divorce was entered by Lora Feete, from her husband, Thos.

H. B. Feete, of Middletown, this county. They were married in Pennsylvania in 1865, the husband deserting his wife in 1881. Mileage Tickets--On the 15th of this month the sale of all thousand loile tickets was discontinued on the B.

0. and P. R. R. roads.

It is said that ere long the different roads will go together and sell 5000 mile tickets to traveling men good on any railroad. Barker, has resigned, having been lately appointed rector of -Ascension church, Baltimore. His successor is Rev. Alex. McCabe, of Laurel, Md. Arthur S.

Johns, rector of Emmanuel P. E. Church, at Middleburg, has lately declined a call to Sligo parish, in Montgomery county, Md. He ia a son of the late Bishop formerly rector of All Saints' 'Church, this city, and abroth- er-m-law of Mrs. Chas.

W. Ross. John T. Six, residing on West South street, this city, entertained a large number of his friends at his residence on Thursday night, the 17th instant, the occasion being the celebration of the 49th birthday of Mr. Six.

The occasion was one of unusual enjoyment and the company left highly pleased with the host of the evening. Attempted Jail attempt to break jail was diacovered by Sheriff Lynch, at Westminster at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon in time to prevent a big jail delivery. The iron bars had been taken out of the windows and blackened broomsticks substituted in their stead. A case knife was found made into a saw for the purpose of cutting out. A 20 pound weight, which it was intended should be used in throwing a rope over the wall was also found.

Bradley T. Johnson. MOTHER EUPHEMIA'S BURIAL. Impressive Ceremonies at St. Joseph's Academy.

funeral yesterday of Mother Catherine Euphemia, superioress of the Order of Sisters of Charity in the United States, was. attended by a large number from Baltimore and elsewhere, professors, seminarians and students from Mt. St. Mary's College and others. At nine o'clock thp people began to wend their way from many points towards the beautiful' grounds of St.

Joseph's Academy, and many persons from Baltimore reached there a lew minutes after eleven o'clock. About five hundred persons were gathered in the chapel of St. Joseph's Academy when the burial ceremonies wer a- begun, at 11:30 o'clock. The body of the chapel was occupied by about two hundred Sisters of Charity in their dress familiar wherever suffering is known, novice in black robes and hoods, and pupils of the academy, wearing white veils. In the choir gallery sat the student! of Mt.

St. Mary's College, while the seminarians and clergy were ranged in a circle within the sanctuary. The gallery and annex south of the sanctuary were filled with the residents of Peculiar in medicinal merit and wonderful cures--Hood's Sarsaparilla. Now is the time to take it, for now it will do the most good. Emmitsburg and the vicinity.

The casket, with its top covered with flowers, stood at the head of the middle aisle, with tall candles burning on either side. The holy office was chanted by the seminarians of Mt. St. Mary's College, Bey. J.

J. Tierney, of that institution, presiding, and solemn high mass was sung by the college choir, Rev. Peter Blenkinsop, S. of Philadelphia, a brother of the deceased, being celebrant, Very Rev. E.

P. Allen, the deacon, and Rev. Charles P. Grannan, the sub-deacon, with Messrs. D.

Quinn and D. O'Grady, of Mt. St. Mary's College, acting as masters of ceremonies. Mr.

D. Brown was organist. Rev. Dr. E.

F. X. McSweeny pronounced the eulogy. The ceremony of absolution having been performed by Bishop James A. Healy, of the Dioces'e of Portland, the funeral procession inarched to the graveyard in the following order: Cross-bearer and acolytes, young ladies Of Academy, professed sisters, novicfis, choir, seminarians, clergy, the coffin, borne by pall bearers selected from the congregation of St.

Joseph's church, Messrs. W. C. Taylor, Dr. John Brawner, Bennet Tyson, George Brawner, James Fitzgerald and Charles Ott, ancient sisters, representatives af other religious communities and friends.

Among the Sisters were deputations from the homes in Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia in charge of the order. Those in the line walked slowly through the grounds to the graveyard gate, and thers the line in front of the coffin separated, allowing the reit of the procession to pass within the gate. Near- the door of the chapel which marks the resting place of Mother Seton's remains the body of Mother Euphemia was committed to the earth among the graves of many Sisters who had died before her, and the procession moved slowly back to the academy buildings. Ashby, living about 3 miles from Oakland, this state, gave birth to a calf which had two well developed and perfectly formed heads, each head having two eyes and a perfectly formed mouth. When the calf bleated the noise came from each mouth. It lived about forty hours. Dr. J.

Lee McComas sent the skin to Washington, D. to have it mounted. Narrow Monday morning while Mr. George Engelbrecht was cleaning his gun at his home on West South street, preparatory to a gunning expedition after robins.the trigger was accidtntly touched and the gun discharged. The load went through the ceiling of the room, making a hole of considerable size.

Mrs. Engelbrecht, who is sick in bed, considerably frightened until she learned that no one was injured. Frank Pierce, III, beautiful owned by Mr. Harry Goodsell, can be found, by breeders of stock, during the season, which will c'ose on November 30th, at Mr. Goodsell's stables at the fair grounds adjacent to this city.

Mr. Goodsell will be pleased to send a full description and pedigree to all persons interested in the services of this horse, Mr. Goodsell has every facility for handling horses and promises to spare no pains to please all who will entrust horses to his care. a dying condition at his home in Pittsburg, Pa. Eis disease is laceration of the intestines and stomach, caused by the particles of glass swallowed during his exhibitions. His physicians have found pieces of glass forcing their way out through his stomach and ekin. Monte Columbus Transcript, in referring to Aiden Benedict's Monte Cristo company, which will appear at the City Hall tomorrow night says: "The largest house of the season greeted Aid en Benedict's Monte Cr'ieto company last night, and Alexander Dumas' masterpiece was rendered in a manner to satisfy the most critical. Mr.

Aiden Benenict, as Edmond Dantes, looked the ideal of the part, and played it only as a finished actor could. Miss Irene Aokerman, as excellent, showing kerselt to be possessed of an emotional power of a high order. The marvelous setting of the second act provoked rounds and rounds of applause. Yeakle's City Hall Shoe Store. Aldermanic committee on Carroll creek held a meeting in the Aldermanic chamber at the City Hall last night.Mestrs. Wilcoxon and Fleming being present. The object of the meeting was to consider the widening of Carroll creek below Carroll street. Marshall E.

Y. Goldsborough appeared before the committee and made a very liberal proposition, which camnot yet be made public, but which will probably be accepted by the board when presented. In the event of the acceptance of tbe proposition it is believed that bed of the stream can be opened and the improvements contemplated made at a very small cost. The Board of C. Board of Charities met at Montevue yesterday, all the members being present.

Extra Postal McComas spent some time at the Postoflice Department in Washington on to Messrs.

Knott and Nash in regard to fast mail facilities for Western Maryland. Mr. McComas is very anxious to have the fast mail on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad extended from Martinsburg west so as to reach the cities of Western Maryland. His talk with the Postoffice officials gave him encouragement to hope that tho extension would either be made in the fast mail to Hancock, Cumberland, Oakland, and even west of those places, or that a postal car will be placed on the Chicago express, which leaves Baltimore early in the morning. The un- ceitainty in regard to the B.

0. "deal" makes the officials hesitate to do anything positive just yet. Mr. McComas also arranged eome minor postal routes thia county, at Wolfville, Hney Giove, and Ellerton, as well as re-establishing the route to Exlin. He also filed petitions from citizens for new postofficea at the following places: Friendship, Washington county; Pine Grove, this county; and Mahlon K.

Wolf recommended by the people for postmaster; Pleasent Walk, this county, and Samuel Betts for postmaster, and re-establish the postoffice at Exlin, Washington county, and Mrs. Rose Bevins for postmistress. Miss Caroline M. Purnell, B. graduated at the Women's Medical College, in Philadelphia, last week. Miss Emma Hartman, of Chicago, 111., is visiting the familr of Mr. B.

O. Eldridge, formerly of this city, lately appointed pastor of Exeter street M. E. church.Baltimore, will to-night be tendered a musical and literary reception by the members of hia charge. Abbe Rebecca, be- loyed wife of James H.

Forney, Esq after an illness of a few days from heart disease at her residence a short distance west of this city at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. She was in the 65th year of her age and besides a husband, leaves three sons and three daughters. Her funeral will take place at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. The interment will be made at Haugh's church; near Ladiesburg her former home. Public Sales John B.

The failures of the weak are about up to the average in all sections of the country. Millinery Opening at the Bee ve. --Messrs. J. H. Thies Son, who recently assumed the proprietorship of the Bee Hive store, No.

16 South Market street, this morning threw open their doors to the public with a grand opening of their new addition, the millinery department. Thia special department of the Bee Hive establishment is in charge of Mdlie. Lula Oastersen, who has had considerable experience in the busmeda, a fact which her beautiful styled in trimming fully attest. The following described bonnets and hats were exhibited this morning and made a most beautiful appearance--one that would please the eye of any young lady desiring a new and stylish covering for the head: Straw bonnet trimmed in heliotrope, very rich; another in Nile green and pink, a beauty that many admired; another of fancy straw and trimmed in old gold and blue attracted considerable attention and was greatly admired; several other's in black straw, trimmed in shrimp and pink, and a brown straw trimmed in gold brown trimmings were also much admired. Among the many hats were a brown Milan straw trimmed in pink, a white straw trimmed in orange and creame, another trimmed terra cotta and Nile green and a pearl straw trimmed with shaded tips and Bengal shaded.

There were many other exhibited but which, for want of epace, cannot be fully described. Suffice it to say the display is one that is worth the while of every lady reader of THE NEWS to examine. The store room has been beautifully trimmed and prisents a handsome appearance. A lull stock of cards are also being exhibited which the proprietors announce will be sold very cheap. The opening of spring styles will continue until, and including Friday, during which time proprietors will be pleased to have the ladies of the city and county call and examine styles and prices.
