"We don't have exact figures from the recent several years, but we know the number of abortion providers was already declining sharply in 1987, and we have anecdotal evidence to show that the decline is continuing," said Barbara Radford, NAF executive director. "About 20,000 women a year now call our hotline, saying they can't find a doctor in their area who will perform an abortion," Radford said in a telephone interview. The measure goes to the Senate, where a final vote is likely later this week.

"Unless drastic changes are made, American women will lose the right to abortion, and the Supreme Court won't be the cause of it," Radford said Monday at the NAF's annual meeting. "The reason will be that physicians either can't or won't perform this essential service.
