Rooftop Impressions Of A Night Before Christmas, 1940 IT was on Friday and Saturday, December 20 and 21, 1940, that the Luftwaffe made their first great attack on Liverpool. On the Saturday longest night of the was on duty on the roof of the Dailu Post and Echo offices as, for hour after hour, enemy machines roared over the city. Thousands of incendiaries and high explosives came hurtling down, while spasmodically one heard bursts of machine-gun fire as the Nazi airmen mercilessly gunned firemen, police, rescue, first aid and ambulance workers as they strove heroically to quell the great fires which, lit up the city, or to release and assist the trapped and injured people.

It was one of two Saturday nights that will always live in my memorythe other was the Saturday night of the May blitz, when I again stood on the same roof and watched Liverpool burning. Fortunately, on both occasions our office escaped, sharing the fate of other buildings rqund about, although, on the Saturday night in May, our fire-watchers had to tackle some fifteen to twenty incendiaries that came through our roof. Bright As Day Soon after the sirens sounded on that December night the first raiders began to drop their flares. As the first bombs fell we could see from the office roof the red glow of fires started the previous night and still burning; before we left next morning we seemed to be standing on an island ringed with flames. While the chandelier flares which lit up the city were slowly falling to the ground, and the red tracer bullets from the guns of ctlr defences were streaming towards them in their, apparently lazy way, the first incendiaries Began to fall.

They must have dropped by the hundred. Many fell harmlessly in the Haymarket and along Victoria. Street and Whitechapel, making the neighbourhood as bright as day. But many also found other resting places. Hardly had the white glare of those in the streets died away than one 'of our watchers exclaimed: a fire across the street.

Looking over the roof parapet we could see the flames bursting turpugh the roof of a shop almost opposite. The next minute there was a cry of Over there." It was the retail fish market, and within a few minutes it was blazing fiercely. By this time the air was filled with the sound of Nazi aircraft, the whistle of falling bombs, and the barking of our guns. Now and again the bombs seemed to be coming straight towards us, and we ducked against the parapet. St.

George's Hall seemed the hall waa ablaze along its entire length. Our eyes turned southwards. What was it was another, the roof of the Russell Building in Church Street was ablaze. The flames spread with amazing rapidity, for it was only a matter of minutes before the whole rOof was alight, and the flames were creeping up the conical tower on the corner of Church Alley. Outlined against the flames we could see the watchers on other buildings between us and Church Street.

What a beacon that tower made as it blazed furiously 1 We watched fascinated, as only fire can fascinate. And every now and then there would come the whistle of a bomb, and fresh tongues of flame, with hundreds of sparks, would fly into the sky from the blazing building Machine-Gunning The raid had been in progress some hours when we heard the even louder roar of an engine. Then came a sudden rat-tat-tat of machine-gun fire. The raiders were gunning tne firemen and others fighting the flames. From my side came a fiercely muttered oath.

About this time the sound of our defence guns suddenly ceased, and during the remainder of that raid I do not remember hearing another bark of a gun. Enemy aircraft appeared to us after that to be flying lower, and bombs whistled over our neads to stoke up fires which a few minutes earlier seemed to be dying at St. Hall and the Fish Market. As we watched we thought of the shelter beneath the hall, where we knew hundreds of people gathered. What was happening to them? Later, of course, we learned that they had been evacuated to places of safetv immediately the fire began.

£100,000,000 During the early morning hours our attention from time to time had been directed towards Church Street and Lime Street, where there were smaller fires between the great blazes; to the black tracery of Holy Cross R.C, Church in Great Crosshall Street, as it stgod out sharply against the consuming flames: and to a fierce blaze which, one of our watchers correctly guessed, was at a big paint stores at the corner of Vauxnall Road. So we stood there, ringed by flames, powerless to do anything. I remember one of our men pulling an Echo from his pocket and reading it as though it were daytime. As we watched our city so it welcome sound of the All Clear came, and we learned that one of the places hit late in the raid was Lovell and warehouses in Williamson Street. It is estimated that upwards of £100,000.000 damage was done that night and the previous Friday.

It has been suggested to me that matches and competitions would provide a change. In these two couples would take the floor at the same time and perform a sequence of basic steps together, points being awarded to the best two couples. Synchronisation of movements would be the ideal to aim at so that there would be a chance for the ordinary dancers as the steps would necessarily have to be simple ones.

This seems an opportunity for academies to train couples together and dance them against two couples from another academy, in addition to having public competitions. 1 am told the idea is to be tested very soon, so keen dancers might like to try it out in private.
