THE LIVERPOOL ECHO AND EVENING EXPRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 1966 Southport Rejects Butlin Holiday Camp Plan COUNCIL TOLD LAND VALUE WOULD BE CUT Southport town council last night threw out an application by holiday camp king Billy Butlin for a Butlin's camp to the south of the town on a sandhill site worth £500,000. Sir Billy's company had submitted an application to build a camp off Shore Road, in residential Ainsdale, home of hundreds of wealthy families, But the chairman of the council's town planning committee, Conservative Councillor Colin Rawstron, told members that valuation had shown that a holiday camp on the proposed site would reduce the value of the land by £150,000. A move by Councillor Harry Shacklady (Labour) to have the ecisi on was defeated by ten votes. Councillor Shaaklady said it was sugested that such a camp might affect nearby residential development, yet some of the most modern villas in the north west had been built along the area of the Squires Gate holiday camp, Blackpool, since the camp was established.
