Gazette Nevada State Journal Nevada Stands As Top Deer Hunting State There are sportsmen who say "It what it used to be" but Nevada still stands as one of the top deer hunt ing states in the country On the one hand hunting pressure has increased and the total kill has generally de clined in recent years On the other hand about 50 per cent of the hunters bagged deer during each of the last two seasons the state ish and Game Commission report ed The success ratio puts Ne vada among me top iv states rom 17 to 20 other states average a higher total deer Jail but hunting pressure has dropped in fish plants By SISTER DOM INGA GREAT TO LIVE IN NEVADA because there is space space enough to live in harmony with the land with deserts forests lakes rivers mountains Hunting fishing boating hiking camping there is space for all these and with them the chance to leam the ways of nature to leam how to reverence creation in all its forms and so eventually to be saturated with a reverence for human dignity And so to grow to maturity or at least to recognize the opportunity to do so because small small enough to know the governor the representative in Congress the senators the city officials as more than names on a billboard or on a voting machine I can meet them and talk with them they visit me on the job and not just at election time I can know politicians as men and politics as orat least recognize the opportunity to do so 1 because friendly enough to let me know the feel of community living whether my neighbor be just a few yards away in the city or miles away out of town Either way Nevadans have a kinship with one another I can depend on a friendly hello from almost everyone and a gen erous response when I have need of a helping hand I can practice what is preached: "Love one "Share one because I see it practiced more than preached or at least I have the opportunity to do ao Sierra Pacific Builds 7 or Nevada's Growth 1 Building for growth Sierra Pacific PowerCo has started erecting a 515 gas fired steam electric generating plant in Mason Val ley 12 miles north of Yering ton This is coupled with a multi million dollar investment in new lines throughout western Nevada and eastern California all designed to improve services and meet growth demands The new ort Churchill Sta tion first' unit will have the largest generating capacity of any steam unit on Sierra Pa system 110000 kilowatts enough power to cover all of Sierra Pacific country less than two decades ago At the Tracy Power Station east of Sparks Sierra Pacific operates an 83000 kilowatt gen erating unit most of the time and utilizes a 53 000 kilowatt unit when demand for electric ity is unusually Gas turbine and diesel units placed strategically throughout its territory gives the Reno based utility1 additional flexibil ity and emergency power pro tection tJ Looking back at 1966 Sierra broke ground for its new generating plant in mid August just 3 months after its administrative staff moved from crowded rental offices in downtown Reno to its own new office building at South Virginia Street and Moana Lane This 516 million structure gave the utility adequate space for work and are being erected at a cost of many millions of dollars to meet new energy demands Lines from Tracy Station east to Battle Mountain were dou bled in capacity replaced or new lines were built in parallel to assure sufficient energy for the Carlin Gold Mine and a million copper mining venture of the Duval Corp 19 mues south of Battle Mountain Currently under construction are new lines which will link uhm Sierra largest cus tomer the Anaconda Co at Weed Heights near Yerington with Tracy power Anaconda' needs more power In 1967 to expand its copper mining oper ation i Later on in 1968 these same s' A '7777X777 I I j7'7 7 7: 77 7 I 7 7 "77" 7'7' 77 I BMP i v' A 7 47 Hunting Is Just Great All Over Nevada i This hunter bagged his buck in the Wheeler Peak Scenic Area in White fe Pine County ing and growing for the first time The move also assured customers and employes alike that adequate parking was for the first time available The new administration build ing is equipped with the latest electric and (electronic facilities for customer service a new phone system with automatic call distribution conveyor belts and automatic rotary files for speedy one stop service and a new IBM 360 computer which handles most billing and ac counting chores once laborious ly done by hand Shortly after this shift Sierra Pacific opened a new headquar ters and operations building at Tahoe Vista North Lake Tahoe a convenient location with easy access to facilities at Ta hoe and in the Truckee Donner area also served by the utility Major transmission lines were Pistol Bar Top Quarter Horse One of the' outstanding quarter horses is owned by a Gardnerville ranch manager Larry Pedrett manager of Los Gatos Ranch turned in the winning bid of 547000 for Pistol Bar quarter racing stallion last September Pistol Bar son of Three Bars was awarded the 1965 American Quarter Horse Assn Honor Roll for Racing He has been a con sistent AAA Plus campaigner and won the 1966 All Distance become the initial facilities for distrib uting ort Churchill Station? power ort Churchill will be fired by natural gas brought south through a yet to be constructed pipeline between the plant site and a major gas transmission line at Silver Springs Antici pating even more population growth in the years ahead Si erra Pacific Power Co prepared its Mason Valley site for a sec ond generating unit one which been designed yet but one the manage ment feels will be needed few short years hence Gandy Dance amed Event or Genoa 7 Candy dance time draws west ern Nevada and eastern Cali fornia residents by the hundreds to the tiny Douglas County set tlement of Genoa Thejlance staged in late Sep tember each year raises funds for community projects or some years after the dances first started money was used to buy street lights and pay power bills Later various school needs were met Now the dance has helped the community with its new fire house project unds from the dance were specifically' allocat ed to the Genoa irehouse Build ing und last year ire house funds have also been raised through candy and cooked food sales sales of cement building blocks and Genoa town young sters even sold old square nails at three for 51 California Quotas are based pn the deer condition' and the pressure of resident hunters A lowered non resident' 'quota was credited in part for the decrease in the deer killin 1965 Other reasons ad vanced by the commission were a shorter season a sharp reduction in the number of doe permits and uniformly poor hunting weather The most productive hunting grounds are in the Independ ence Jarbidge GooseCreek Pequops and Ruby and the Copper Moun tain Tennessee Mountain and 'Merritt Mountain areas ofElko County in the northeastquarter of the state 6ood hunting White Pine County includ ing the Snake Schell Creek and Egan areas ranks sec ond in importance NorthernWashoe County and Humboldt Lincoln and Eureka counties also offer good hunting Deer are the dominant Ne vada big game animal but not the only one Each fall a 'few hunters win permission to pursue the pronghorn antelope the desert bighorn sheep and the elk None of these are common however Recently two other less common species mountain lion and wild turkey were classified as big game A lim ited turkey shoot was held inNevada for the first time last year 1 Nevada offers some fineupland game shooting too traditional favorite the'sagehen has diminished in as its members dropped and chukar par jtridge have appeared on the scene 'Explosive on the ground swift in the air tasty on the table the Indian import has command as the most hunted game bird I irst planted in Nevada in1935 the chukar took readily to the sage deserts By 11947 Nevada offered the first unlimited chukar hunt in the nation Tbe peak season came in 1964 when sportsmen took an 175000 birds But range and moisture conditions govern the chukar flocks andhunting was not as good dur Ing the 1965 season 1 Duck and goose hunting is I surprisingly good considering I reputation as a des ert state Birds congregate in swamps and valleys along stream systems Like the chu 3 kar partridge season the wa terfowl season lasts many weeks Another popular bird is the ringneck pheasant which A Probably not since taking magnesite and turning it into various grades of powder seems so routine But it At least fifteen separate operations are necessarylike ball mitling blending pugging briqueting drying kiln firing and sizing Our people at Gabbs work hard to make ievery one of these operations successful And this shows in the quality of the hundred fifty thousand tons of magnesia products Basic exports from Nevada yearly Have we ever told you about our operation?
