The republican judicial district convention which met at the court room yesterday, was eallpd to order by Eldon Lowe, acting chair man of the judicial district committee.

Col D. Snoddy of Linn county, was named chairman of this convention, and several com mittees were duly appointed. When the convention was ready for busi Mr. Samuel Barrett, one of the delegates from Crawford county, arose and in a very neat and appropriate speech he placed Judge S. West in nomination, and the nomination was seconded from all over the room in a most enthusiastic manner.

On motion the rules were suspended and Mr. West was de dared the nominee of tne convention by ac clamation, A committee consisting of Barrett of Crawford county, Gates of Bourbon and Latta ot Linn bounty was' then appointed to wait upon Judge West, inform hm of the act ion of the convention and request his presence in the room. In a short time the committee returned with Judge West who was duly introduced and addressed the convention as follows Mr. Chairman and gentlemen of the conven- tion is always supposed that every American citizen who dabbles in politics is always' and on all occasions prepared to make a speech and I may state frankly that this is the first time that I was ever interested personally in the action of a nomination conversion without some preparatioa for remarks, but having been buy to day and. not knowing of any serious opposition I am not prepared, and therefore will not produce any lengthy manu script to substantiate what I say.

"i certainly appreciate the action which understand this convention has just taken in cornering upon me the nomination. I feel confident that no Judge in tnis part of the state ever had such an amount of work in the numb and importance of the cases as I have had up to the second' day of August.

In addition to the work of the district being somewhat be hind, there seems to have been a holocaust of new liugatioir of all sorts, so that I have been compelled a largt portion of the time to work almosr mght and and with the aid ol counsel engaged teacned such decisions as were as neany right as possible. 6, 1890 The see-saw of politics has put the renublicans on too aeain in the House, and there they will remain as long as they can keep a republican quorum here; but how long that will be no man can tell, but the probabilities are that it will be until the tariff bill is disposed of and not a day longer. The majority jumped on the fillibustcrin? democrats as soon as their quorum got here and not only seated the Negro contestant who was the cause "of the fortnight's dead lock, but also seated another Negro contestant from South Carolina. The democrats are -loud with their cbmplai'njts because the last one was seated without one word of argument for or against him, and without any notice having been given that the 1.1 wouiu ue vuucu uy. mo Wrnlrn nn a-r rvi 1 nn further thin or Uof ir.teri rrn5 Iporjil anil liU oajf tuau mm -r i some of them intimate that the only reason the rest of the contestants were riot 'seated1 was because the Election committee did not have their cases ready The republicans criticise the democrats very harshly for the methods they resorted in order to prevent the seating of the Negroes but people with good memories can eacily reccolect the republicans resorting to things just as Vad when the democrats were in control of 'the House. Unprejudiced people would be glad to see filibustering entirely dropped and the majority no master which party it happened to represent, allowed to legislate as it might see nt.

iiut this we shall never see as long as there are professional politi cians. At last the long drawn out agony is over, and the tariff bill has beeii report ed from conference. It is not entirely satisfaetory to a number of the republi cans but there is ho reason for believ ing that the dissatisfaction is sufficient to prevent the adoption of the report, which is a compromise between the bill as originally passed by the as amended by the senate. There is a possibility that the democratic senators Diay take advantage of the power which they unquestionably possess to hang the tariff bill up until it is too late for the President to call an extra session of Congress, unless the repubublicans will agree to abandon the idea of holding an extra session to pass the election bill. The probabilities are, however, all in favoi of an early disposition of l.

Brevities. With the of autumn comes the lone evenings and the farmer should see it.that he improves them by storing his mind with information concerning hifci as a business man for such he is. -1 Some cranks (I dislike to apply that title to brother but know of po other that is approprate) in Walnut Grove lodge issued a challenge to the order 10 meet them in joint discussion in tha question that the political "step" taken is detrimental to the order, To such let me stand up to say that in as much as much as the order has taken no political step, unless it be some one horse cranks who are disappointed because their Lodge have dispensed with their service as officers, and who being so filled with their own narrow prejudices go wild with anger because a majority of the membeis exercise the great privilege guaranteed them by the constitution of the United States and by our oyn consti tution, the right of independent political action. Ever s.rnce the dismal failure of that class of would be leaders to sidetrack the political support of the order for one of the then great political parties they have been id with jealous raee. They have been shrieking "You are ruining the order." But in spite of their croaking the order, like the vigorous young Giant it is, gives them the pitying charity of brotherly love and passes to the great task laid betpre it.

Long live the F. M. B. A. The number of present at the re cent democratic meeting clearly'demohstrates two thing, viz: That they are liberal enough and fair minded enough to grant all sides of the questions, at issue a hearing, and that they are awake to tie value of the knowledge and are using every available method to gain it for it is the vehicle of success.

From the speech of Mr, Isett made in Bronson recently one would inter that a be lief was prevalent among the class of people that he represents that the F. M. B. A. were hostile to the interest of the retail dealers Nothing is farther from the truth.

This order is hostile to nothing that is necessary to the honest, legitimate transaction of the business of the country. But we have become so used to misrepresentations that thev fail to inter est us but we go, in the even tenor ot our way striving to do what is right lor "right is right and harms nobody. 1 Once again we call the brethren's attention to the fact that the lodge elections Occur at the hrst regular meeting in October. Be sure to cull the forest over carefully and select only the best timber with wnich to build the lodge structure for the next term, for one de- ticiency weakens the whole structure. UORD1US.
