The News Week ending Friday September 11 1987 14 by EDDIE GRABHAM my Mystery of the harem by ADRIAN CREEK ORGANISERS of the forthcoming Greenpeace outdoor festival at Frimley Green have already lined up what will be a sure-fire great day out As well as six bands there will be clowns jugglers record tape and art stalls and food on site for the concert which runs from 2 pm till late at Highland Farm Old Guildford Road Frimley Green on Sunday September 20 Appearing wiu be var-dobop" band Magic Moments ATT whoae well- documented exploits and sounds will make them Unfortunately the heat the desert and the rough passions conspire to bring an unexpected turn of events destined to bind the beautiful teacher to her captors The story becomes confused on occasion and as a result its impetus gets lost With judicious pruning this aimless movie could have been a very entertaining thriller Thriller WITCHBOARD (Guild Home Video 94 mins IS) spells big trouble for susceptible Linda (Tawny Kitacn) She's intrigued by an ouija board but her boyfriend scoffs at her When an evil spirit begins to take over even exorcism proves too mild a cure Tighter direction would have heightened the tension but in many ways this entertaining thriller is more effective than the relentless horror offered in so many films WHERE THE RIVER RUNS BLACK (MGMUA Home Video 91) mins PG) a beautiful and mysterious Indian woman gives birth to Lazaro the son of a handsome priest When his mother is murdered the boy is cared for by kindly Father O'Reilly (Charles Duming) Lazaro recognises one of his mother's murderers and despite the dangers seeks revenge Amazonian settings provide the perfect back-drop to a fanciful story told with considerable charm Drama JUST BETWEEN FRIENDS (RCAColumbia 106 mins IS) brings Holly and Sandy together but they don't know they share the same man Happily married Holly encourages her new-found friend without realising that her husband is the object of Sandy's affection and desire Comedy turns to sour drama but Mary Tyler Moore and Christine Lahti give first class performances as the buddies who learn to hate each other HAREM (New World Video 186 mins in two parts PG) explores the mysteries of the Ottoman Empire and its Sultan In 1906 young diplomat Charles (Julian Sands) is sent to Damascus before he can marry his beautiful American financee Jessica (Nancy Travis) Desperate to be with her husband-to-be Jessica goes with him and soon becomes involved in the social life of the Embassy She accepts an invitation to join a sight-seeing expedition but on the way she is abducted by rebel leader Pasha When he exchanges her for some of his imprisoned men Jessica finds herself in the Sultan's harem Will the wily Sultan (Omar Sharif) get her into his passionate clutches or can Charles arrange for her escape? Jessica hasn't seen the last of Pasha she can't help but notice his dark flashing eyes and sexy good looks as she becomes involved in the Turkish Rebellion High production values adorn this desert soap opera but despite a scene-setting note at the beginning this is definitely not intended for history buffs SLATE WYN AND ME (Palace Video 91 mins 18) tells a tortuous tale of passion and revenge in Australia's outback When the Jackson brothers are interrupted during a bank robbery Wyn shoots the local cop As the incident is witnessed by schoolteacher Blance (Sigrid Thornton) Slate and his trigger-happy brother have to take her along when they escape into the wilderness Blanche makes several attempts at escape but when that proves fruitless she turns her attention upon the boys By alternating her affections she soon realises she can cause rivalry and thus bring their downfall TOP to bottom Jatt Mick Magic Kate Twilight and Shona Moments of Magic Moments ATT MissionSisters Of Mercy-type band line up as a straightforward no-nonsense four piece Kym Wright (vocals) John Way (guitar) Pete Burgess (bass) and Shaun Jackson (drums) They'll make a nice break from a surfeit of keyboards special effects and drum machines! The remaining two bands are The Charles who are busy arranging a clutch of important London gigs and preparing to head into the studios to do a new demo some time in the autumn and At Twilight Time a splinter band of MMATT who can feature any group of musicians as long as one of them is from the "weir-dobop" favourites JAZZ-FUSION band The Breeze are the latest to sample the delights of Bracknell's South Hill Park tonight (Thursday) Formed just over a year ago they have performed over 60 gigs since last May at places such as London familiar to regular readers Suffice to say they probably will be doing their curious set as usual but punctuated with a few verses from poet Mai Cies-lak Whether it win be warm enough for the mime striptease I don't know! At the moment Magic Moments are shooting a promo-video Also at the festival win be Momento Mori who go on stage with just one week's rehearsal with a new drummer Andy Bullock (guitar tapes) Martin Crook (base vocals videos) Neale Brodie (drum machine) and Shaun Jackson (drums) are the quartet that make up Sack Bladder' Punters I'm told are to expect a "sensory onslaught" they admit their music is not aimed at a wider audience A recent addition to the bin are The Visionairies a Venues Zeeta's Club Mankind and Islington's King's Head TWO Cambcrley bands will be going to Windlesham next Saturday for a gig at Chertsey Road Hall Mark's Flying Warehouse have been going since 1982 splitting up and re-forming at least three times while individual members tried other bands drummer Nik Sutherland for instance was in Fra until January Nik and original members Stuart James (guitar) and Ross Merrin (bass) got together once again in Jury to set about the task of writing some completely new material which doubtless will be on show next Saturday Appearing with them win be The Deadbcats formed in August by Paul Hark (bass) and Dom Coles (drums) who left Senno Reflex Their line-up has been supplemented by Jason Applin (vocals) and Ric Testa (guitar) They've been busy writing a new set that will take them through a string of local gigs in the autumn In June a track from their demo "Heavensent" was played on Radio One's Janice Long Show Gallery's first one-man show THE BREEZE blowing through South Hill Park tonight (Thursday) TO start the ball rolling with one-man exhibitions at the newly-opened South Farnborough Galleries in Lynchford Road comes Robin Mullen who recently held his first show successfully at the Johnson Wax Kiln Gallery in Farnham Robin from WhitehilL was bom in Malaya although most of his life he has lived in Aldcrshot A self-taught painter he was trained as a designer but found that his preference was fine art and he has now decided to become a full-time painter One of the works on show in this exhibition dates back to when he was 14 and is a commendable watercolour still-life His style has changed somewhat since then He works mainly in oil or pastel using pastel in a painterly way blending the tones Artist Robin Mullen and one of his paintings TONIGHT (THURSDAY) GARY NUMAN Guildford Civic HalL (Guild-fold 67314) SONNY BLACK Farnham Millings (Famham 726234) THE BREEZE South Hill Park Bracknell (Bracknell 427272) OB NETWORK The Lion Brewery Ash (AMcrshot 331392) NICKY PAPAS The Crimea Aldenhot (Alder-shot 24163) TOMORROW (FRIDAY) THE JEREMIAHS SOMETIMES SATRETOO SWEET TO SUCK Reading Paradise Club DOUBLE TROUBLE The Rising Sun Alder-shot (Aldenhot 23785) CRYING OUT LOUD The Lion Brewery Ash NICKY PAPAS The Golden Fleece Elstead (Famham 702349) SATURDAY BOYS IN TROUBLE The Bridgehouie Bracknell (Bracknell 42S396) ADRIAN The Rising Sun Aldenhot TARROW The Lion Brewery Ash COME ALL YE South Hill Park Bracknell BOOGIE CHILLEN The National Film Theatre South Bank London SUNDAY TIGER TIM'S RAGAMUFFINS Redgrave Theatre Farnham (Famham 715301-Lunch) NICKY PAPAS The Crimea Aldenhot MONDAY EYES IN THE SKY The Ball and Wicket Upper Hale (Famham 723337) TUESDAY BIG BAD WOLF The Lion Brewery Ash STEVE TURNER The Fox and Hounds Fleet (Fleet 5980) INFERNAL TRIANGLE South Hill Park Bracknell WEDNESDAY EASY TARROW The Lion Brewery Ash PETE LAITY The Toad and Stump Evenley Cross CUFF BILLETT Famham Mailings THURSDAY SPLIFF RIFF Famham Malting BOYS IN TROUBLE The Lion Brewery Ash damp greys he achieves the mistV landscanrc that we are familiar within to produce atmospheric effects which are natural and evocative of the English countryside He has a clever way with foregrounds never overcrowding and often achieving an effect of the wind rustling through and he keeps colours understated which gives a pleasing result Robin likes to show trees fully-clad in leaf and as any painter knows green is not easy By subtly including soft Robin Mullen's paintings arc finding some success in the USA and Australia as well as Britain You can watch how he docs it at the gallery on Saturday when he will be having a "paint in" The exhibition continues until September 19 PEGGY FITZGERALD.
