consequence of the numerous complaints of the country people against its operation, the law recently passed by the City Council forbidding the hitching of horses on the streets, for a longer time than one hour, was, on Monday morning repealed. PROTRACTED Disciples of Christ have been holding a very interesting meeting at Beaver Creek, resulting in some 25 or 30 additions, most of them being by confession and baptism. Dr. BELDING, of New Yoik, was the principal speaker. He labored to promote Christian union among the follow- ei of Christ--to have them unite upon the Bible alone--and to conform to the theory and practice of tho primitive Christians.

The venerable Bishop RUSSELL, of the United Brethren Church, as well as several other clergymen, attended the meeting a part of the time. Much religious feeling prevailed. The audiences were very large, and the best order and decorum prevailed. AUTUMN. --Autumn is once more upon us.

The weather has been delightful, and the season propitious. But soon now a change will come over all nature. The sere leaf has already made its appearance; the trees are becoming stripped of their loliage; the beautiful green fields are assuming a graver hue; the mountains look dowu upon us with a mournful aspect; and tbe birds do not carol as blithely as of old--but still we are satisfied. One season is as necessary as another. An all-wise Providence has arranged this for onr advantage, as we experience year by year.

For our part we love the atmosphere of Autumn and never feel better than when enjoying its invigorating influences PUBLIC ENTERPRISE--SHALL ivs PROGRESS, OK SHALL WE RfiTKOGADE Long have tbe peaceful and passive citizens of our county lived in quiet, following the well beaten paths of their fathers and leaving the stage of existence, with no mark or record, varied or valuable. A lew more enterprising than the rest, left this tranquil and unchanged field, for those which invited progress and brought a kind reward. Glimmerings of public spirit now and then appear, but in a few daj all is quiet and inert. Onr wealth and means which many conld by their own intelligence, multiply and increase, passes to the hands of strangers. Works of public advantage and profit have languished, and finally ceased to exist from the same indifference and inaction.

"We almost appear blanks to creation, we seem to be made for no end or live to no purpose cannot succeed in an undertaking because wo will not pursue comes from no deficiency ot ability, no want of opportunities, but the cultivated iu- ditterence and the studied isolation which we all bear to each other--the timidity of inexperience and the mini of bclf-coufidence. In few public and profitable undertakings have our men of capital and energy joined with the ardor or intent which marks the man of ambition, decision or success. We have not concerted for the geueial interests or our own benefit, but moved slowly in an unprofitable and nnprosperons way. Few counties possessing the extent of ours, the equality of means, the immense resources, and the inviting op- pot tuuities, have done less in advancement, or iu multiplying their wealth. It is true pub- lie institutions and woiks are withiu our limits, but are they fostered or flourishing? (Jan point to them with pride and satisfaction i Those alouu, cieditable aud progies- sive, aiecontrolled and directed by btiungers; tliis too where dominant native talent abundantly pievnils.

Will this apathy, this in- ditlbi once continue hen all elsewhere is prosperity, improvement and advancement? To be quiet is to go backwaids-- the times aropro- icsiive, tortile espausivv. Will not rouse at lust to our true interests aud pursue lie course maiked out by enterprise and en- ouiaged by profit and rewaidf We are now state of transition are we to improve or we exist longer in thisdull unsatisfactory ml undcsiiable condition A iiew era is bei i us complete the works of pubic benefit and wealth, now projected, with he spirit aud powei existing elsewhere, and ind omselws to the depositories of com- ncice, by these loads of iron, profiting by mblic example aud acquite tho foice, vigor i i of those whose success and acquii- ions have domoustiated their woith, their and theirforesight. Let us Imrmou- ze and unite for the advancement of the in- vestfe, of the county, its pride and reputation. We have untold and riches Shall ve seek among strangers for their develope- nent, permitting them to fill their coders from ur doois, i wealth i i our grasp; or hall the passive enterprise, action and resources of our couutv combine for its prosperity, ts progress and its expansion For from 0111 flourishing and produc- ive vallies have wo looked upon the inoun- ains of oui southern border as striking, picturesque and varied--magazines of fuel, the last euuiauts of our foivsts. Capped by the sparkling quartz and spar, the giunitc, gniess turf slate, we no longer icgarded the fall of tho Oak, Pino aud Chestnut--as objects of profit and value but of beauty and jrancleur: rocks of the that period--once a urbulent liquid mass, boiling and restless, low quiet and silent then uns.haped and valueless, now mingled i untold stalworth mountaineers and frugal farmers have left them exposed to the sheltetless and bleaching--inviting the hand if enterprise and art to their rich, exhaustless glittering ores of commerce," developed in tho recent discoveries of Copper oic to which we have referred, and iu the valuable deposits of iron which have now ceased to be worked.

THE A --The tournament on Saturday was a great success. At 9 o'clock, the Knights, to the number of thirty-one assembled in the Squaie, under the direction of Mr. John G. Chief Marshal, and Lieut. John li.

King and Samuel Z. McLaughhn Assistant Marshals. llt'sxdod by the Leitersburg Comet Band, the cavalcade proceeded to Mr. Grove's field near the teiiuin.ition of Jonathan Street. IN THE FIELD.

Tho Knights formed in front of the stand, and the uiles to be observed during the day wore agreed upon. Dr. A. K. Fleming, Col.

E. Cook, Prof. L. P. Blood and Messrs E.

Cost and L. Benton were named as judges, and took the stand. Jas. P. Matthews, acted as prompter aud called the list.

While the Knights were registering their names and titles, and pacing the entrance fees, a number ot persons crowded upon the stand which gave way. piecipitating the judges, prompter, and about twenty other persons to the ground. Mr T. M. Baker had a handtul of greenbacks and currency at the time of the accident, which was toescd about lather loosely, The money was all recoveied.

A glass of lemonade went down with the wreck which was not recovered Nobody hurt. A spring wagon was backed up, and the judges, aud prompter took their places upon it. with a caution to everybody to keej off. (We have the names of all the Knights ant their titles, but received them too late for in Ucrahl and Torch.) The rules were read; each Knight to rid five times for the crowning; tho one who hac taken the ring the greatest number of times out of five to crown the Queen the next bes to crown the First Maid of Honor; the nex best to crown the Second Maid of Honor; ant the next best to crown the Third Maid honor. At half-past 10 o'clock the signal was given and tbe contest began.

The first round was most spirited and exci ting. Mr. John L. Cost, Knight of the Bra zilian Forest, led ofl', took the ring, and wa loudly cheered. He was followed by Mr.

M. Baker, Knight of Queen Victoria, who also took the ring. The other Knights followed in rapid succession, many of them taking the ring. After the second round the success wa not ao brilliant, Several horses became re ractory and showed considerable disposition leave the track. When the fifth round egan, the contest was narrowed down to four inighta, although the whole liat "was called, all rode, with one exception.

Mr. Baker, inight of Queen Victoria, had taken the ring bur times in succession. The fifth time he struck it, bnt it dropped to the ground. Mr. Charles Herbert, Knight of Washington, had also taken the ring four times but missed it fifth.

Mr. Charles Harper, Knight of Leeown, was the only remaining Knight on the ist who had taken the ring four times. When lis name was called there was a breathless suspense. He came up the course at full speed and won. The judges decided him to bo the victor, and entitled to crown the Queen.

This fact was announced by the prompter, and received by the audience with great applause. There was a tie between Mr. Baker and Mr. lerbert for the crowning ot the First Maid of Honor. They rode three times, when Mr.

Herbert, Knight of Washington, took the ring, and was declared the victor and entitled to crown the First Maid of Honor. Mr. Baker, inight of Queen Victoria, was declared next jest, and entitled to crown the Second Maid of Honor. Mr. Robert Grove, Knight of Smithfleld, lad won tho ring three times, and was declared next best, and entitled to ciown the Third Maid of Honor.

THE SILVER CUP. The contest for the SILVER CUP now commenced. The prompter announced that each would ride twice for the Cup. If there was a it would be decided between the parties. Twenty-four Knights ware entered for the Cup.

After the second round the contest, laid be- iween Mr. Jacob D. Winders, Knight of the Torest, and Mr. William Winters, Knight of lagerstown. Mr.

David Gray, Knight of Mack Rock, took the ring three times, but judges decided that the second time he vas not at speed. After several trials Mr. Winders. Knight of the Forest, took the ling, nd won the cup. THE CROWNING.

Mr. Harper, Knight of Leetown, selected Hiss Amanda Benton, of Sharpsburg. as Queen if Love and Beauty; Mr. Herbert Knight of Washington, selected Miss Lalic Brewer of lagerstown, as First Maid of Honor, Mr. T.

Baker, Knight of Queen Victoria, selected Hiss Maggie McKee of Hagerstown, as Second Maid of Honor. Mr. Robert Grove, Knight of Smithfield, selected Miss Josephine Gregg, of Philadelphia, as Third Maid of Honor. The crowning ceremonies were conducted Mr. Matthews.

The cup was then presented to Mr. Winders, vnight of the Forest. After the crowning and presentation, Mr. datthews delivered a short address. The day was fine, aud every thing passed off most pleasantly.

In the evening a grand ball was given by ho Knights at Lyceum Hall. About sixty couples were in attendance. It was a most brilliant affair. COUNTY Jnion County Convention of Alleghany assembled in Cumberland on the 15th inst ind nominated Hon. GEOKGE A.
