A Trial Latttlng rear Prisoner Jovial. The jury in tbe Broer murder case brought in a verdict of guilty last evening after about an hour's deliberation. The case was brought up Mon day, a jury was empaneled aud the trial began Tuesday, County Attorney Bowman conducting tbe prosecution. These were the jurorB: John Hollls- ter, foreman, J. G.

D. Wickhani. County Attorney Bowman bad sum moned about thirty witnesses and It was but a short time until he bad tbe culprit hopelessly nmesbed. He con ducted the case of the state with rare tact and skill and applied the law with bis characteristic gravity and acumen. The sum of tbe otaie's evidence was that Van Brunt bad done about as be had confessed to having done to a republican reporter ana toothers.

There was some expert testimony as to the quantity of strychnine required to produce death and as to tbe nature af the powder found in Van Brant's valise. Tbe defense, which was conducted by Messrs. R. W. Berry and C.

E. Bra-nine, produced two wltnei sea to show that Van Brunt is not strong mentally. Willie this is a fact, it could not be shown that his weakness is great enough to relieve him of responsibility. The attorneys for the cefense made as strong a fight as can be made by men without a toothold. Mr.

Berry's address to the jury was very comprehensive and frequently eloquent and pathetic. Mr. Branine, who has a reputation as a good talker, "kept np his end." Van Brunt waited with composure during tbe deliberations of the jury and when tbe verdict was returned he seemed to have received relief from the little suspense which he has occasion ally shown himself to fftet. When he was returned to tbe jail he laughingly told the prisoners there what was tbe result and evinced jollitv in many ways. He was brought here from New York in 1879 with a large number of orphans, by an association whose business was to find homes tor its charges. He was adopted by John Hackney of Highland township, with whom he lived tilt 1884. From then 1111 the time of the murder he worked in various places thiol ghout the state. In December of 1889 he took supper at Broer's house on section twenty-six, Richland township, and then conceived the idea of murdering him, for he bad been told that Broer bad money. On the 12th of tbe following May be stopped at the Broer place again and while tbe old man was preparing supper Van Brunt stealthily put strych nine in tbe food.
