Ffi Atli 'l 1 1 I'4: NAVY ASKS FOR £l5 7 500 9 MORE TO SPEED UP REFITS SUPPLEMENTARY estimate for the Navy, issued today as a White Pape is for £15,500,000. The original estimate for the year ending March 31 next was for £153,000,000. An explanatory memorandum says the increase follows a decision to strengthen the defence forces, involving speeding-UP of the Navy programme for refitting ships of the Reserve Fleet, together action to improve the position with regard to equipment and stocks generally.
In addition, various commitments in respect of increases of pay and allowancea and other unforeseen liabilities, have had to be accepted during the financial year. The Government propose to set up at an early date a National Institute of Oceanography. The work will require two small vessels, and £65,000 is provided for their purchase from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Government. The Navy estimates for the coming financial year, 1949-50, are also issued today, and call for 1189,250,000. which is £38,250,000 more than the sum voted by Parliament for the preceding financial year, "READINESS" An explanatory statement by Viscount Hall, First Lord of the Admiralty, says that about half the increase arises from improvements in Naval and civilian emoluments, exhaustion of war stocks, and higher prices.
The remainder represents additional provisions for measures required to maintain and improve the state of readiness of the Fleet. Crews of certain ships immobilised for a time by heavy reduction of personnel in the latter part of 1947-48 have now been completed and "build up of an active Fleet has proceeded satisfactorily, according to plan" BACON TAKEN FROM COALVILLE STORE I A side and shoulder of bacon were among property stolen during a weekend raid on the lock-up shop belonging to Mr. Henry Johnson, in Midlandroad, Ellistown.
