The Park Service, which oversees the lighthouse, had asked Congress for $12 million for the project, including funds for revegetation. But the Senate cut those funds when it pared a $10 million request to $9.8 million, said Cape Hatteras National Seashore spokesman Bob Woody. Woody said earlier this week that the appropriation of $9.8 million wouldn't include enough money to restore the damaged dunes.

The lighthouse is nestled just behind the dunes, about 120 feet from the Atlantic surf. But park Superintendent Bob Reynolds said Thursday that the dunes will be restored by the park service once the move is finished. Cancer fells Raleigh broadcaster By J. CAMERON TEW The Herald-Sun RALEIGH The man who launched newscasts for WLFL 22 and NBC-17 in the early and mid1990s died early Thursday morning of colon cancer. Adam "Bud" Polacek, the 55- year-old former president and general manager of NBC-17 (WNCN), died at his Raleigh home.

A 30-year broadcasting veteran, he spent the last 16 years in North Carolina: first as president and owner of the Heritage Broadcast Group based in Asheville, then as general manager of WLFL and finally as president and manager of NBC-17. "This is a very sad day for us at NBC-17," Mike Ward, NBC-17's president and general manager, said in a statement. "Bud's vision for this TV station came true. He led us through our growing pains to become a major force in local news for Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville and Goldsboro. His leadership, foresight and commitment to NBC-17 will be missed." Mr.

Polacek left the station in April because of his illness. Mr. Ward replaced him. "Bud was an extremely professional broadcaster," said Ed Stephen, vice president of advertising and promotion at WNCN. "It was his drive and dream to make this station a competitor." The former Air Force captain graduated from the University of Miami of Ohio.

After a four-year stint in the U.S. Air Force, he began his broadcast career in 1968 with WKBF-TV in Cleveland, Ohio. He worked at stations in Cincinnati, Washington, New York, Miami and Atlanta before making his move to North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Sally, of Raleigh; a daughter, Noelle; and son, Gregg, of Pacific Palisades, a grandson, Graham Polacek; two sisters, Anita and Adrienne Polacek of Cleveland; and two stepsons, Hunter and Blake Teske of Raleigh.
