Birmingham Post-Herald Friday April 25 1986 State i AlO Alabama Legislature losing more familiar faces trating most of their attention on keeping US Sen Jeremiah Denton of Mobile ia Washington and bolstering the party numbers in the legislature The GOP currently has four members in the state Senate and 12 in the House The Republicans will be seeking 12 SenJ ate seats and 51 House seats this year An intra-party scramble probably will occur in 10 of the districts Three of the Senate and seven of the House races will have two or more party candidates fighting it out in the June 3 primary sion Glen Browder of Jacksonville is a candidate for secretary of state and Chris McNair of Bessemer is running for a seat on the Jefferson County Commission Rep James Preuitt of Talladega is seeking Teague's Senate seat and John Rice of Opelika is seeking the one being vacated by Little These numbers are likely to run higher because many legislators have tough competition Although Republicans have fielded a slate of statewide congressional and State Board of Education candidates they are concen The other three in the Senate are running for statewide races this year They are Sens Hinton Mitchem of Albertville and John Teague of Childersburg both running for lieutenant governor and Ted Little of Auburn who is running for state treasurer In the House Reps Tom Nicholson of Jasper Earl Mitchell of Northport and Republican Spencer Bachus of Vestavia Hills are not seeking re-election Rep Charles Martin of Decatur is running for tiie Alabama Public Service Commis Republican Don Hale of Cullman in the November general election Sen Gary Aldridge D-Hartselle has withdrawn as a candidate for Public Service Commission Place 2 according to A1 LaPierre executive director of the Alabama Democratic Party Aldridge first had announced he would run for state attorney general but switched tothePSC Including these two withdrawals at least of the 35 Senators will not be back next year along Alabama Legislature takes office in November Sen Steve Cooley D-Cullman has withdrawn as a candidate from Senate District 4 which includes Cullman County and parts of Madison and Morgan counties The withdrawal means Randall Shedd of Cullman automatically will get the Democratic Party nomination on June 3 and face Fowler's father files $66 million of oil escrow fund released wrongful death suit year terms Gaskin was granted immunity in return for his testimony at the trials of Campbell and Johnson The suit which was filed by Earley Fowler Jr who is the administrator of his son's estate charges that the four men andor actually willfully wantonly maliciously Intentionally and unlawfully killed Fowler with a firearm" The suit states that as a result of the act Fowler's life was terminated Following the disappearance of Fowler a former police officer in Hoke's Bluff and Piedmont a massive search was conducted throughout northeast Alabama for the victim's body A week after his disappearance his abandoned automobile was found in a Birmingham shopping center and blood and bone fragments were found in the trunk Fowler's body was found Sept 10 in a wooded area in the Shady Grove community near Attalla By Dave Fiti PM-HcraU CMmpoadcat GADSDEN A 1 million wrongful death lawsuit has been filed in Etowah County Circuit Court by the father of Steven Fowler the victim of a murder-for-hire plot 14 years ago The suit filed on behalf of son Steven Earl Jr names Ricky Gaskin Steven Clecker Lynn Benjamin Johnson and Bobby Campbell as defendants Three of those men already are serving prison terms in connection with the Dec 26 1984 slaving which occurred at the teen nightclub he managed on Albert Rains Boulevard in Gadsden Both Campbell and Johnson were convicted last year in separate trials in Etowah County Circuit Court on charges of conspiracy to commit murder Johnson was sentenced to life in prison Campbell received a 59-year term Cleckler pleaded guilty to two felony counts and received concurrent 25- Pact-Herald Moatfonwrjr Bartav MONTGOMERY The federal government has sent Alabama more than 666 million that has been held in escrow during a dispute of offshore oil and gas revenue Alabama's actual share of the more than 16 billion that has been held in escrow is $73 million but the other $7 million will be paid by the federal government without interest over the next 15 years beginning next year Congress gave final approval last month to legislation that settled the long dispute over how much states should share in a 3-mile buffer xone of offshore waters that abut the seaward boundaries of coastal oil producing states The Department of Interior has 29 tracts under lease in the buffer xone off Alabama DeWitt Gamble an employee with the Slate Treasurer's Office said about 23 million of the money has been invested in longterm investments The remainder is temporarily in overnight bank repurchase agreements until long-term interest rates can be found The aim is to put the money into investments that draw the best interest Except for about 6660170 that will go to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources the remainder goes into the Alabama Trust Fund At the urging of Gov George Wallace that trust fund was created last year by the Alabama Legislature and approved as a constitutional amendment to permanently lock up revenue from offshore oil and gas production Only the interest from the invested trust fund can be spent That interest will go into the state General Fund Police receive several leads on Sherry Greenville police said yesterday they have at least two leads on the whereabouts of Sherry Lynn Marler 14 Sherry was featured Wednesday on the television program III: Have You Seen This Person?" throughout the state Mbs Howard a 20-year-old blonde with dark brown eyes who stands 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 125 pounds has a habit of winning beauty pageants But she also realizes the importance of staying physically fit and competed in both indoor and outdoor track meets at the state level during her high school days After winning the Mbs Alabama USA pageant she decided to take a leave of absence from her studies at Birmingham-Southern College where she a sophomore majoring in public relations In her last semester at BSC she had a grade point average of 369 on a 4-point other contestants The winner will receive more than 6175000 in cash and prizes and the right to represent thb country in the Miss Universe Pageant When she leaves Saturday she will be carrying with her a 610000 wardrobe including 17 cocktail dresses 35 to 40 sportswear outfits 25 pairs of shoes and three evening gowns The first night of Mbs USA Pageant Miss Howard will compete in state costume She night in swimsuit The third night she will be wearing a hot-pink silk dress for the interview competition Mbs Howard will be in Miami with the other contestants for 34 weeks prior to the actual Miss USA competition During that time the contestants will be busy with luncheons and various other activities promot ing the pageant she said Finab of the pageant will be telecast live on CBS at 8 pm on Tuesday May 20 Her parents and some friends from BSC will be arriving in Miami for the final week of preliminary judging and the final night's competition goal to make the top Mbs Howard said has not had a girl in the top 10 in a long time I feel prepared I've worked out and studied every Time magazine and newspaper I've also read up on my state and want to represent Alabama the best I can If that's winning it's wonderful But if not 111 know I did the best I Mbs Howard who has had nine years of voice training and eight years of piano training said she thinks pageants are good for building self confidence for those who win But she not so sure about the hundreds of girb who spend money and time and don't get anywhere "It makes you very self-assuming and you have to think about yourself a advertising firm of Gillis Townsend and Riley Inc and the tourism bureau of the Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville led to her decision to pursue a career in public relations During her senior year at Grissom High School in Huntsville she also traveled around the country promoting the Miss American Coed Pageant Miss Howard won the Mbs Alabama Coed Pageant in 1983 and was first alternate in the national competition She has been spending the last several weeks getting ready for the Mbs USA Pageant where she will be competing with 50 Miss Alabama USA Heather Howard kind of tough I'm glad I've
