Highway ia a combination deli bar and video game arcade While that may found like it makes for an unusual combination it seems to work On a recent visit the Pot Luck crew found the sandwiches were good the bar was quiet and the pinball and Pac Man wiaphiiies did not draw a noisy crowd the night of the visit Roger Bressler who has owned the eatery for five years later told us we'd picked the slowest time for all three parts of the restaurant The inside layout Includes a bar and a few tables in the main room which has a very large window overlooking Green Springs Highway It'a decorated in a St Patrick's Day motif with green and white streamers and leprechaun cutouts on the wall The side room has tables booths and video games The tables in the main room are actually the kind of large spools used to roll up cable The spools are turned on their sides and the tops have been sanded and finished In other words the Irish Deli features good sandwiches not elegant furnishings The Pot Luck crew tried the Reuben sandwich (1285) Lucky Seven sandwich (8185) a bowl of gumbo (gl85) and french fries (609) The owned beef lover pronounced the Rueben very good The sandwich included a goodly portion of lean corned beef which was saved heated on rye bread with mustard sauerkraut and Swiss cheese 1 He was also pleased with the gumbo It was thick and nicy and contained a good deal of seafood It's also available in a cup (81) for diner with leas hearty appetites The other member of the Pot Luck duo went for the Seven" the Irish own version of a club sandwich Served hot on three slices of rye bread it includes sliced turkey bacon melted Swiss cheese lettuce tomatoes and Thousand Island dressing The combination makes a tasty and fill ing sandwich While the salad dressing tended to make eating Just a little messy the bacon was fried to the correct crispness and the tomatoes were ripe At (0 cents a regular order of french fries is a real bargain at the Irish Dell The order was more than enough for one member of the Pot Luck crew and the fries were Just the way they ought to be piping hot and crispy on the outside showing no sign of the grease they were fried in A regular-siied glass of iced tea also costa 10 cents but the waitress was good about offering a refill Our waitress was quick to bring us our menus and to take our order and she quickly brought a large assortment of condiments (everything from ketchup to lemon juice) to our table After that we waited more than 20 minutes for our order which seemed a bit slow for the number of people inside the restaurant The waitress said the delay was due to a microwave oven on the blink But if the restaurant lost any points in its favor over that the waitress earned them back as we were leaving While the Pot Luck team was backing out of the parking lot she ran out the door carrying a package we'd left at the table Tab for two (minus tip) was 8875 The Irish Deli also features a combination sandwich deal which lets customers choose one type of meat one type of cheese several condiments and one type of bread or rolL The large size costa 82 J5 and regular is gl95 Other items on the menu include a dozen oysters on the half shell at 8125 and fried seafood platters (with cole slaw and fries) from 8460 to 8475 Brassier said The deli also offers fried shrimp or fried oysters served on a submarine roll The shrimp loaf pies for 8125 and the oyster loaf costa 8275 Brassier said the deli was named by a former owner who was Irish The restaurant moved from downtown to its present location about two years ago Carol Caton offers a customer the condiment tray at the Irish Deli on restaurants are not related to whether tbe establishment advertises in this newspaper This report was prepared by Jay Hamburg and Sandy Amann Do you have a spot that tbe Pot Luck crew ought to visit Maybe it's that sandwich shop where you always eat lunch Or that steak place that no one knows about but you If it's first-rate or raunchy drop us a line at- KUDZU co Tbe Birmingham Post-Herald Box 1553 Birmingham 35201 Food is served from 11 am to 10:20 pm Monday through Saturday The bar usually closes later depending on the crowd Brassier said Master Charge Visa and American Express cards are accepted as are Colonial Dining Club coupons KUDZU'S restaurant reports are done by staff members of the Birmingham Post-Herald who visit a restaurant unannounced order from tbe menu eat and pay the bill without being identified Reports Terryk Barkeeae TM Kart Lake Road (M) Saak Drive-la IIM Center Paint Hoad (M) Tan Bed 111!
