Shawnee RCD produces film on land use Land use from the standpoint of personal ownership is the theme of a Shawnee Resource Conservation and Development film scheduled for premiere showing late this year. The film, entitled "Land Use Planning, a Moral Dilemma," is being produced under a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council, matching fund donations from coal companies, and Shawnee funds. The film is being prepared by Craig Hinde. of Maplewood Productions of Carbondale. oel Stallings, chairwoman of the Land Utilization-Water Conservation committee of Shawnee said the film is not intended to solve all of the problems of land use, but is intended to "stir thinking of the land owners." She said the film will explore topics such as why people feel as they do about the land.

It also will discuss associated agencies and land use planning, including coal companies and soil and water conservation groups. Mrs. Stallings said the film looks at Southern Illinois land "from a historical viewpoint, including why people first came to the area, and on down to the problems of modern day land use." The film is scheduled for broad exposure early in 1980, and is to be incorporated into the annual meeting agendas for all 14 Southern Illinois counties which make up the Shawnee group. Extra copies of the film also will be made available for other gorups, Mrs. Stallings said.

Total budget for the film is $79,800, including in-kind contributions from the Shawnee totaling $40,000. The Illinois Humanities Council provided an outright grant of $10,250, in matching funds. The matching grant was met by $5,000 each from Southwestern Coal Co. and Amax Coal and $1,500 from Southern Illinois Independent Coal Operators, plus $1,600 from the Farm Bureaus of Jackson, Williamson, Randolph and Massac Counties. Mrs.

Stallings said the Shawnee group decided to do its own film on land use problems after failing to find a suitable film from available sources. The film tentatively is scheduled for a premiere showing in December.
