Birmingham Ppst-Herald i Friday Ntwenter 11 1983 Vi After Police bowl talk sounds good It cost me $1350 and a temporary lou of hearing but I found a place the other night where people talking about Auburn-Georgia or who is going to what bowl game Of course they weren't talking about the Alabama-Southern Miss game either But is anybody? 7 I did have to put up with the smoke from some joint in front of me to uy nothing of the sound of the PAUL FINEBAUM looked at life from i both sides now Auburn defensive end has Georgia roots 5 By BUlLumpkin MAnHIpitfeHtat AUBURN The essentials are much like they wen IS yean ago The difference between then and now are a loss a tie and TV 1 In 1971 Quency William wu only 10 yean old and playing kldi dames in Douglasville Ga Auburn and Georgia were both unbeaten and untied when the two old rival teed it up in Athens that year 1 Fans who have a ticket see it Television invite Itself Quency Williams wu too young to be aware of the biggest college football game in the nation being played In his home state But he will be when Auburn and Georgia meet again in the same Athens arena tomorrow in a shootout of equal importance Bowl invitation and a Southeastern Conference title are in the ante as they were in 71 Of course the charts have undergone a few minor revisions Auburn 'Juu a Ion and Georgia a tie yet the two are ranked higher in national -polls Plus television has decided to make an appearance Williams kai aged 12 years He's 22 now and he'd walk to the game jo be there if that were the only means He need a ticket made advance reservation on the Afield When the game kicks off Williams will be where he has been many before He knows the Georgia campus like he knows the back of -his hand brother Gregg played at Williams said is a good school" Gregg Williams showed up in a Georgia uniform two years after Auburn's Pat Sullivan and Teiry Beasley had beaten the Bulldogs 35-20 on that memorable November Saturday in 1971 7 "I used to come to Athens and my brother would show me around I wu a young Georgia fan I went to all the Georgia games I could knew everybody on the Georgia team the players the Quency grew up and matched his older brother in size and height six feet three inches and weigh around 219" Williams said brother played at about that size We both played tight end and defensive end in high school played defensive end at Georgia He wore No 94" Quency Williams also is a defensive end and he wean Jersey No 93 But his admission to Sanford Stadium be through the Georgia players' entrance t- He'll get off the Auburn turn bus He plays for the Tigers The switch in loyalties is not without explanation It wu a slow change that occurred during recruiting "I wu highly recruited by Just about every school in the he said knew all about Georgia When I wu young I went around hollering to pi Dawgs' I had a good friend Charley Thomu (quarterback) playing at Auburn I visited Auburn and Charley showed me around I really liked the atmosphere Auburn wu a lot like my hometown It wu small I liked what I saw "I had seen Auburn play when I wu being recruited by Auburn and some of the other SEC schools See AUBURN page B4 couple behind me who seemed to be giving each other a quick course in mouth-to-mouth resuscitation Yep I went to the Police concert Me and every 14-year-old in town After listening to Sting and his two cronies belt out such heady lyrics "Every breath you take every move you make every step you take I'll be watching I'll take bowl talk anytime So how's my updated version of the bowl outlook: Sugar Bowk Auburn vs SMU Although the game has little appeal for national television it will match two of the top teams in the country Should Auburn knock off Alabama the Tigers will enter the game no wove than No 1 SMU is No 7 right now and will probably be higher by Jan 2 The Sugar would rather not take SMU a school with a limited rational following But it will be the highest ranked team The only way this bowl can have national championship implications is if Nebraska and Texas falter Cotton Bowk Georgia vs Texas Georgia will probably come into the game with a 9-1-1 record (the loss being to Auburn) making this a pretty good matchup probably the best of the major bowls The Michigan-Ohio State winner and Notre Dame will be given some consideration should Georgia beat Auburn If that happens Auburn is probably headed to the Gator or Fiesta By MHhcI MrtWIu The brother of Auburn defensive end Quency Williams played at Georgia Henshaw isn't happy with his creation By Ray Melick Post-Herald Reporter TUSCALOOSA think George Henshaw 1 would be a happy man Alabama is 6-2 The offense is ranked eighth in the ration averaging 4457 yards per game and 346 points Quarterback Walter Lewis is 10th in the ration in passing efficiency For all of the Crimson problems this season offense hu not been one of them But Henshaw is not pleased The first-year offensive coordinator of the Crimson Tide wants more "I think we can do he said not scorning enough not moving the ball consistently we need to and not taking advantage of ail our opportunities to put the ball in the end zone Anytime you move the ball across the 50 you need to put some points on the No turn in the Southeastern Conference is scoring more points than Alabama Only three teams in the entire United States are putting more points on the board not that Henshaw is greedy He hu no problem with the number of points His concern is with the timing of those points number of people uy good Henshaw said have to disagree When it gets down to when we need the points we done it Sometimes good defense Sometimes we just self-destruct a matter of doing it when we have to Like the last time we played in Birmingham against Tennessee we moved the ball pretty consistently for three quarters then the last quarter we of the things I felt pleased about Saturday (in Alabama's 32-26 victory over LSU) wu that while we did not day well offensively against LSU when it came to the critical situation in the fourth quarter we did That's what we need to be doing more See HENSHAW page B4 Orange Bowk Nebraska vs Miami Everybody will Mil this one as the rational championship game but that's only if Nebraska wins which it probably will Should Florida State upset Miami: it will really mess up the apple cart in Miami and everywhere else If Miami is out of the picture look for the Orange Bowl to turn to the winner of Ohio State- Michigan Rose Bowk Illinois vs UCLA Illinois is one of the top teams in the country UCLA is one of the top teams in Southern California This bourf will be a bore Fiesta Bowk Michigan vs Boston College The winner of the Michigan-Ohio State game will probably be invited if Miami beats Florida State and Auburn beats Georgia The opponent probably will he the Alabama-Boston College winner Any of the matchups would make for a pretty good game Notre Dame is an outside possibility should the Irish knock off Penh State If they lose they may stay home again 7 Gator Bowk Florida vs Pittsburgh Local politics will probably get the Gators into thb game But can you imagine any bowl committee who would want to host Charley Pell for a whole week? Citrus Bowk Tennessee vs Maryland 1- 7 This bowl has unlimited potential In a few yearv It has gone from the worst to perhaps the best of the non-New Year's Day affairs The Citrus is probably headed for a contract with NBC starting next year This bowl looks like a good bet to overtake the Gator Bowl soon in rank Liberty Bowk North Carolina vs Iowa Both teams have been disappointments But ibis should turn out to be a pretty good matchup Sun Bowk Alabama vs Ohio State 1 One of the best-sounding games on the board Too bad neither team is any good Bluebonnet Bowk Baylor vs Missouri Baylor gets the winner of Missouri -Oklahoma State which should be Mizzou This game used to be one of the better ones but not anymore Lately the Oilers have given football a bad name in Houston Holiday Bowk Brigham Young vs Oklahoma l-I A good matchup in San Diego featuring BYU's paving vs Oklahoma's running Peach Bowk Florida State vs Oklahoma State -I This could turn out to be a pretty good game which is a major upset for the Peach The Seminoles lost-1 few down the stretch but still have an excellent team: Oklahoma State's losses are to Oklahoma and Nebraska Hall of Fame Bowk Kentucky vs West Virginia A real coal miner's special A team nobody gave a chance and me that many thought would contend for the national title will end the season on Graymont Avenue Kentucky should bring the fans which is what the Hall of Fame folks wank Aloha Bowk Washington vs Penn State Again two teams that were picked for major bowls but failed to come through However a good matchup for a bowl in trouble Independence Bowk East Carolina vs Toledo This could be the worst-sounding matchup in the history of bowl games The interesting thing is that both have good teams except nobody wants to see them Senior Bowk North vs South No matter who wins tjp Auburn-Georgia game it won't affect this matchup- Hagler retains his title pinned much of the time on the ropes The a lot of puenhes in an way off but Hagler out-punched 15 days short of three 32-year-old Duran stunned by saying and eighth round to lose the Council welterweight title Leonard who was at in Duran this time tremendous mental and physical he fought like a reborn said he wu after he won middleweight title June 16 Moore wu outgunned Hagler he had to use them all superb Md to write boxing he further wiped out the lou to Leonard in New to beat me you're going Hagler said before final two rounds he gave it the kind of closing performance puts on when he senses stake over Hagler' eye in the to have the best of the several good head shots three-minute seuion Then and Hagler answered the a champion must' LAS VEGAS Nev Marvelous Marvin Hagler letting out all stops in the 15th round scored a unanimous but clou decision over a pliant Robert Duran last night and retained the undisputed world middleweight championship There wu no "no in Duran on this night but the effort fell short of making him the first fighter to win four world titles He currently holds the World Boxing Association junior middleweight title Judge Ove Ovesen of Denmark scored it 144-143 judge Yuuku Yoshida of Japan uw it 146-145 and Judge Guy Jutras of Canada had it 144-142 all for the 29-year old Hagler who apparently kept his title with his Mg effort in the final round The AP scored it 145-142 for the champion Before the bout watched by a sellout crowd of 15200 in an outdoor arena at Caesars Palace Hagler had said think it will be a good tight I love a good He fought a good fight and he got a tough battle from Duran in return Hagler came out storming in the 15th round his left eye badly puffed and blood dripping from a cut over it Hagler slammed into Duran with some body shots and then landed four or five pod head shots climaxed by a right that stunned vDuran and drove Mm backward The but (two minutes were a brawl with Duran challenge the way challenger threw effort to fight his him The fight came yean since the the sports world quitting in the World Boxing back to Sugar Ray ringside last night There wu no quit He wu in shape and fighter which he the WBA junior against young Davey But while Moore had the guns and 1 Duran made a history He lost but disgrace of the Orleans you're going to beat me at my the fight In the his best It wu a champion his title may be at The cut opened 14th but he seemed round scoring with in a mauling came the 15th challenge the way Roberto Duran (lefjjMakes hard right from Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
