Congress seat of Sen Howard Metzen-baum whom he defeated in a Democratic primary race earlier in the year Bumpers governor won in a landslide' over Republican John Jones Bumpers earlier was a primary winner over Sen Fulbright chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Among the Democratic incumbents who won re-election was Sen Thomas Eagleton of Missouri who got bumped as the Democratic Montgomery in the Democratic primary She faced Alabama Prohibition candidate Mrs Geraldine Hughes of Rt 2 Oxford but Mrs Hughes withdrew in September Lane defeated A Todd of Russellville in a hotly contested June Democratic runoff for commissioner of agriculture and drew no opponent Tuesday The appelate court races were settled by the Democratic primaries Toughest was a cliff hanger in which Birmingham attorney Eric Embry was listed a 436-vote winner over William Morrow Jr of Montgomery general counsel with the State Bar Association Morrow contested those results and Embry was upheld
