to cabaret featuring visiting entertainers in the club One night when I was tucked up in bed at about 1 am a riot broke out in my chalet block Ill-feeling between camp security staff and kitchen staff many of whom came from the rougher parts of Liverpool and Manchester had turned into a pitched battle when kitchen staff discovered one of their colleagues being beaten up by security men It was quite frightening to be woken by the sound of breaking glass packs of youths hurling sticks and stones and shouting tribal chants and security wagons being hi-jacked and smashed up Definitely a night out to remember but thankfully the din last long order was restored and it didn't happen again while I was there It is possible to save money working in a holiday camp during the Summer ana it is possible to really enjoy yourself For me the work was long and monotonous but the amenities were terrific and the people both staff and campers were interesting to say the least are now yjPEM BRITISH holiday cam not only provide hi de fun for families and individuals they give summer jobs to students hoping to save money too I was one of the those students at a camp in Wales for seven weeks I was taken on as a kitchen assistant a very ung-lamorous title for a very7 unglamorous job For the princely sum of £50 a week (this was about four years ago) I swept floors cleaned dirty kitchen tops and dealt with waste food loading binfuls of it onto a for use as pig food There were compensations of course Food although basic and rather bland was plentiful and my accommodation in the traditional chalet was free Like the campers I was allowed free of charge into the many bars and clubs at night when I working and between shifts during the day there were sports and amusements galore to occupy my time My duties as kitchen assistant involved clearing up after kitchen staff had finished preparing and serving meals at the canteen used by most of the campers I always find time to eat a breakfast in UP DOWN A pool tournament is held at the Albion every Thursday night with an entry fee of 50p and a prize for the winner Strawberries and cream are going down a treat at Ivories piano bar in the Imperial before settling down to work in the second shift of the day from 1230 pm to 230 pm There was then a long afternoon break before the next shift which started at about 430 pm Invariably if the sun was out I'd wander through the camp taking in the sights or laze in the sunshine During the evening shift us kitchen assistants would work furiously for two or three hours and at the end of the working
