'i v-v VT vj t- 1' 'r rVrr1 I 10 IIRMINGHAM FOST-HERAID Monday April 26 1971 sxsm State playoffs won't conclude prep baseball season Greg Homager who pitched Erwin past Berry with a two-hitter looks like the best bet to start for the Eagles Homager is now 64 on the season Huffman has its work cut nut for it this week The Vikings play Western at 4 pm today and Leeds at 7 tonight Then the Vikings take on West End Tuesday night at 6:30 all at Huffman They need only to win either the Western or West End game to clinch the berth Huffman coach Phil' English can boast of three fine pitchers Buddy Choat Mike Turner and Mike Carraway Each one will start in the three games scheduled Choat probably the flashiest of the three will start Tuesday night 27-hole district eliminations at Roebuck Golf Course for the state high school golf championship was canceled because of thunder and rain and has been rescheduled today The course will be closed to the public The final of the city track meet at Lawson Field also called off Friday because of rain will begin at 3 pm today at Lawson Field of teams from the Anniston area As it stands now Saks will meet Anniston High for that right The City representative from Area 11 is paired against Bessemer The opening round starts Friday and the second round is set for Saturday These two rounds are single elimination The semi-final round is May 7-8 The teams in the semis will meet in a best two-of-three series The same best two-of-three will hold true in the finals which will be May 14-15 There are two divisions one composed of 3A and 4A schools and the other of 2A and 1A teams how Bubba Scott secretary of the Alabama High School Athletic Association has planned it But a hitch Saks is hosting a sectional track meet Friday the first day of the playoffs This will put the diamond in Anniston out of commission that day Scott probably will be asked to move the playoff game between Erwin and the Area 10 winner to Thursday No definite action has been taken yet but Erwin coach Skip Bundy said that sounds fine to him Usually when playoff time rolls around it means the season is about over Not so in baseball The state playoffs commence during the season and Alabama champions are crowned while the teams still have regular schedules to complete There's an explanation and a simple one The reason is to finish the eliminations taking in account the possibility of postponements before school terms end Jefferson County teams already are preparing for tlie beginning of state play and here's how it'll go The Birmingham club with the most victories will represent Area 11 It'll probably be Huffman In the county it's a little different Jcfrco schools are split up into Area 9 and 10 The winners of these two berths are determined by a playoff between the four top teams Bessemer nipped Graysville 5-4 for the championship in Area 12 while Krwin took Berry 4-3 for Area 9 honors Saturday Huffman has virtually clinched the Area 11 title The Vikings need only to win one of its two games scheduled this week They play Western today and West End Tuesday The Vikings are 9-0 in the city and 14-2 overall Erwin will now play an opponent from
