Local orthodontists start Smile for Lifetime chapter DUNCAN Children who wear orthodontic braces look forward to the day when they come off, revealing to the world a beautiful smile for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, many children who need braces not only to improve their smile but also to correct severe dental problems do not have that opportunity because their families can't afford them.

Orthodontists Phil Higginbotham and Eric Nease are now bringing smiles on the faces of some of these children in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties through the Smile for a Lifetime Foundation. Dr. Higginbotham and Dr. Nease, who have a combined 50 years' experience in orthodontics, decided to start a local chapter of this national non-profit foundation because of "an unbelievable need for orthodontic treatment in the Upstate." Smile for a Lifetime began in 2008 through the efforts of founder Dr. Benjamin G.

Burris of Jonesboro, with the goal to reach individuals who have not had the opportunity to acquire orthodontic assistance due to financial reasons other special needs. The local chapter serves deserving children residing in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties, and it's also the first Smile for a Lifetime Chapter in the Upstate, according to Dr. Nease. "We will receive referrals of children in the Upstate from the local schools, specifically from school nurses, guidance counselors and teachers," said Dr. Nease.

"These will be children who really need braces and not just cosmetically. They may have severe dental issues such as overbite or tooth crowdedness, which would lead to dental complications in their future." In addition, candidates for free orthodontic treat- ters, Cheryl Dodson (Jason) Walls and Stephanie Dodson (Brannon) Bridges; and a greatgrandson, Cameron Walls.
