BIRMINGHAM POST-HERALD Saturday Octofcar 21 1967 PACK A'' the knock-down and drag-out struggle The Hurricanes could have won by an even greater Only the brilliant play of Tiger linebackers Mike Koleri Robert Margeson Ron Yarbrough Marvin Tucker and Gusty Yearout (before he was hurt) ends Jim Bouchillon and Bill James and tackle Charles Collins kept it from being worse The winning points came at a time when it looked like Auburn had finally found offensive momentum Quarterback Larry Blake-ney had engineered the Tigers from their own nine to a commanding position at the Tiger 43 Tim downfall came on the next play Blakeney rolled to his left pitched toward tailback Dwight Hurston Hurston never' got the football Smith ran his 1-3 243-pound frame be tween the two caught the ball and he could have rolled the 35 yards to the goal line without being-touched 1 The defeat was a sad Jolt to an1 Auburn team which had run with ease over three consecutive opponents and was leading the Southeastern Conference in scoring offense The Tigers are now 4-2 with Auburn had the best of the passing yardage 138 to 58 but it was in this department that Miami hurt the Tigers most Miami intercepted two passes Left halfback Vince Opalsky was the top running threat carrying 18 times for 82 yards Right half John Acuff ran for 43 yards before leaving the game after being tackled fay Kolen Blakeney hauled the ball four times for Auburn for 30 yards Hurston had 29 yards in nine carries Miami quarterback David Olivo completed four of eight passes (one being intercepted) for 54 yards and Auburn signal caller Loran Carter had five of 19 completed for 72 yards two being caught by Miami ball hawks Auburn ticked toff the minutes in the first half teaching the Hurricanes a gentlemanly lesson in the fine old art of defense Miami controlled the football taking the snap from center 41 times to only 23 for the Tigers Despite the one sidedness of the fracas Auburn had a golden opportunity to slip out front at halftime but John Riley's 29-yard Add goal was wide of its mark early in the second quarter Auburn's Dwight Hurston (20) is pushed out of bounds by Mi- ami's Jimmy Dye after making a long run setting up the Tigers on the Hurricane six However the drive was stopped and Miami went on to win 7-0 (UPI Telephoto) Tide Hopes Losing Streak Ends Today 43451 permanent seats has been sold out teyeral tbnes and our defense was aMe'to keep them out Miami Miami likewise came close enough for a three-pointer However Phil shot from 48 yards moments later was' a mite too short The Hurricanes took the opening kickoff and with Opalsky legging on 11 and 19-yard runs moved to the Tiger 39 before the Auburn linebackers got mean and forced a punt four downs later from the 45 Auburn never had a chance to move away from the shadow of its goal in the opening period gaining possession of the boil thrice at the 20 23 and 7 The some 2000 War Eagle supporters got their first chance to cheer for the offense early in the second canto when the Tigers took over the football at their own 37 Carter passed 11 yards to wingback -Tim Christain and on the 1 next play threw to Hyatt on the 40 The ball bounced off hands and tailbhck Dwight Hurston caught the defelected ball on the run and reached the Miami seven-yard line before being tackled But the Hurricanes got tough' themselves at this point and Auburn found itself facing a four and 13 at the 13 when Riley ran on to the field His 11th boot of the year at three points was wide of his mark He has kicked seven Frtun there Miami marched to within field goaf range picking the Auburn defense for 51 yards to the 33 The Mg gainer was a 17-yard completion from Olivo to fullback Jimmy McGuirtl The Hurricanes had a first at the Auburn 47 and on first down Don Russo ran for nine to the 27 This is when Auburn had its moments on defense End Bill Jamep threw Russo for a two-yard loss and tackle Charier Collins stopped left half Joe Miaro for a minus two forcing Tracy to go for his wide field goal from the 48 yards away The opening 1 developments In the third itanza were much like the first' part of "the Orange Bowl show Auburn was still unable to move and Miami marched into Tiger territory the first time it had the ball before being halted But when the Auburn offense with Blakeney at the helm suddenly looked like it was getting ready to Jell it turned into a Miami touch- down1 Starting from his own nine Blakeney moved his team out to his own 21 then rolled deep and wide and ran for 18 Mg yards to the 40 Two plays later Blakeney pitched back to Hurston and that was a mistake Smith was there to take the throw out and he even have to turn on the speed to cover the 35 yards to the touchdown Tracy kicked the pat after it was Miami 7 Auburn 0 Jimmy Carter almost put his teammates back into the game when he swiveled-hip-ped his way 18 yards on punt return to the Miami 34 and needed but one Mock to have gone ail the way Miami again thwarted Blakeney's efforts and Riley was called on for his second attempt at the goal posts His kick was long enough but it was wide again this time from 48-yards out In the fourth quarter Auburn crossed the 50 three times The only chance at points came when Riley went for his third field goal a 45-yarder It was long enough but it was too wide A pass Interception all but eliminated any Auburn hopes late in the peripd Miami sideback Jimmy Dye' intercepted a Carter pass at the Hurricanes' 12 and that was just about it BY BOB PHILLIPS CLEMSON football team is performing here for the first time ever at 1 pm Birmingham time and is a solid favorite to snap out of the one-game losing streak which' the Tennessee Vols threw it into at Birmingham last Saturday The Crimson Tide is a ouchdown-phis betting favorite over the Clemson Tigers whose coach Frank Howard is like Alabama's Paul Bryant a former Alabama star Whatever pressure was involved in maintaining a de-featljess string (the Tide's was 25 games) was relieved by Tennessee's 24-13 victory and said Bryant no reason why we play a terrific game and course I think it will take a terrific game to win i Frank has a Mg rough line and he has a sharp passing game and some fine The Tide squad flew into Greenville 26 miles from here shortly-alter noon yesterday and took lodging at i motel They worked out lightly in Greenville and will bus over this morning just before the game They will bus back to Greenville and fly back to Tuscaloosa in time 'for their evening meaL While some Tidesmen have lingering hurts most of the first and second unit players on both offense and defense are expected to he available In good fettle for sure are the passing team of quarterback Ken Stabler and split end Dennis Homan Tennessee held the pair scoreless (although Stabler ran for a TD) after they had connected in each of four games and for a total of eight touchdowns Clemson remembers the duo well Stabler tossed a touchdown pass to Homan and one to fullback Kenny Martin and himself ran for a touchdown in the 26-0 rout of the Tigers at Tuscaloosa last year Alabama also still has Steve' Davis who booted two' field goals in that pme Clemson's squad is in perhaps its finest physical condition since the opener with Wake Forest Several top is the biggest strongest team we have played including Tennessee I think Miami and i Tennessee would be a game part of -its to be met Florida id the next foe in Cliff Hare Stadium Saturday week and after that comes Mississippi State Georgia and Alabama One of the pre-season favorites to make a strong challenge for the National Championship Miami is now 4-2 It was the second over an SEC team having beaten LSU earlier in the year Actually Auburn was rarely in scoring position The Tigers were in Miami territory only five times an night the closest being to the 12 Other efforts were bottled up at the Miami 49 38 and 3L John Riley 1 had three chances at field goals but he was too tar away on each attempt for any accuracy He tried from 39 48 and 45 yards away Miami had one kick at three points that hieing in a first half which ended scoreless when Phil Tracy was short on a 48-yard attempt Statistically it was all Miami The Hurricanes had 14 first downs to six for the Tigers and 117 yards rushing to Auburn's 117 Ramsay would assure the defending league champions a return to the Clinic game The loss dropped Banks to 4-1 in the league The Jets will now have to defeat Jones Valley while Ramsay has to lose both of its league games left in order for the Jets to get into the Clinic Meanwhile Valley will have to take its two remaining games over Ramsay and Banks to earn a spot in it Valley is 34-1 The big difference in last game was Ensley's Stars Upset Sullivan capped the 10-play movement to score but his kick was blocked by Jon Cox and Ramsay led at halftime 7-6 Bank made hii second Interception Just before intermission Sullivan's only interception was taken in by Cox on Carroll's first series of the second half at the' Carroll 35 and Wehby threw the last 10 yards to Vacerella to get the Rams a 13-6 lead Ford's trick missed The Cave came right back' in six plays from their 33 bi Sullivan dashed for 34 yards on the first play then hit Shelby for 19 ran 11 more to the one and smashed over from there Hie kick tied the score halfway through the third period Ramsay got up a head of steam hut Cavalier tackle Bill Remmert fell on a bobbed Ram pitchout at the Carroll 39 From here Sullivan and Gary Cooney ran to the Ram 30 a pass to Mike Earle and another to Cooney got to the 18 Sullivan went to the one-and put Carroll ahead on one-yard keeper the toughest schedule still BY BILL LUMPKIN Sports Editor MIAMI An outweighed but play by Phil Smith we probably would have played out than all night without Jordan said Smith a defensive end in- tercepted a pitchout from Auburn quarterback Larry Blakeney to tailback Dwight Hurston and ran it 35 yards for six points is rather obvious that defense did a great Job on our offense We expected the Mg strong pass rush that they put on he said you can trap draw' and screen off this type Miami defense affected our team and even our field goal man and we think it is one of the Jordan added sure think it was going to be a defensive battle Miami ia going to give the rest of their away the script at John Carroll Field last night as the Cavaliers turned back favored Ramsay 19-13 behind an outstanding three-touchdown performance by Carroll's ace quarterback Pat Sullivan and a Cavalier defense that refused to quit In what was billed as Car-roll's air attack vs a power house running game by Ram-' 18 Sullivan went to the other's game to register the 1 greatest damage in the first meeting ever between the two southside schools It started out like the' Rams would Mow the Cavaliers right out of their own stadium when on the first play of the game Ram fullback Charles Vacerella dashed down the sideline untouched for 51 yards to put Ramsay out front as David Ford's kick made it 7-0 As it turned out this was the only serious ground threat the Rams could muster against Carroll's heretofore generous defense A 48-yard roll out sprint by the elusive Sullivan carried to the Ramsay eight and after Shelby moved in to the three ability to come up with the Mg play
