Wofford College's January Interim provides students with the opportunity to work for a month on a topic of special interest.

Students may choose from on-campus seminars with faculty members, career-oriented internships, off-campus travel-study projects, or students may design their own independent researchstudy project under the direction of a faculty sponsor. Venezuela trip Wofford College student Melanie Thompson traveled to Venezuela during Wofford's January Interim. A graduate of Gaffney High School, Thompson is the daughter of Jim and Jane Thompson of Gaffney. Thompson spent four weeks in Venezuela focusing on the interrelationship of the environment and society in Venezuela. She explored a variety of natural areas and ecosystems: the cloud forest, the Orinoco basin and the llanos region, the tepuis and the Great Savannah.

Honor mcs High-achieving students at Winthrop University have been honored by being named to the President's or Dean's lists for fall semester 1995. Those making the President's List were Catherine E. Byars and Angela Marie Sparks, both of Gaffney, and Angela Hawkins Surretsky and Katherine A. Touchberry, both of Blacksburg. Those making the Dean's Your Family Clothing Store logical stations and sites for ecotourism.

Her adventures included hiking, excursions on horseback, river trips and travel by small airplane. Palmetto Scholars Four Cherokee County high school students were recently named 1996-97 Palmetto Scholars by the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg. Palmetto Scholars are outstanding South Carolina high school graduates who have excelled academically and whom are honored as some of the best entering freshmen at USCS. Recipients of this honor receive a half-tuition scholarship and have an average SAT score of above 1000, rank in the top 20 percent of their high school class, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. Our Everyday Low Price s2.98 Special Purchase The 1996 Women's Summitt, Renewing Democracy: Step One Preparing for Election '96, has been announced for Saturday, Feb. 10, 1996, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Breed Leadership Center, Columbia College, Columbia. This summit is presented by a coalition of 14 state organizations dedicated to providing voters with awareness of issues and how their involvement is important in the election process.

Major sponsors of the summit are South Carolina American Association of University Women, Columbia Area League of Women Voters, and Columbia College Leadership Center. Local supporters include the Gaffney Branch American Association of University Women. President Evelyn Howe commented, "We are really looking forward to this Summit. We expect to bring back a lot of ideas to use with our Voter Education Project" The goal of the summit is to develop an understanding of the political process and the important role that women can and must play in shaping the state and national political climate. As informed and educated voters, women can affect change that protects the rights of women, children, education, health and 'the variety of issues touching the lives of families in our state.

The summit brings together women of South Carolina to examine the implications of the 1996 elections. Participants can choose from a series of workshops. Invited speakers include Gil Thelen, The State; Jim Hendrix, S.C. Election Commission; John Crangle, S.C. Common Cause; Ronnie Maxwell, S.C.

Democratic Party; Henry McMaster, S.C. Republican Party; and Rick Silver, Chernoff Associates.
