(AP) The huge Japanese submarine dived, struggling for cover in the Atlantic depths as an American torpedo bomber wheeled above and locked in for the kill. The bomber pilot heard an explosion and then the sound of air rushing out of the doomed ship. The 1-52 sank on June 23, 1944, with 109 sailors and two tons of gold Japan planned to use to pay war debts.

The ship, bound for a port in Germanoccupied France, also held raw materials for the Nazi war machine. For 51 years the location of the submarine's grave was a secret, until a maritime researcher using new computer mapping technology found and photographed the ship last year about halfway between the Cape Verde Islands and Barbedos. Project director Paul Tidwell plans to salvage the gold along with artifacts from the ship, and may try to raise the submarine itself. 124 Archer St Spartanburg, SC (803) 573-1001 or 1-800-499-7299 27 deaths blamed on heavy flooding By NED KILKELLY Associated Press Writer After the worst flooding to hit the East in years, swollen waterways slowly receded and thousands of evacuated residents returned home to find floors caked with mud and basements turned into icy swimming pools. Melting blizzard snow combined with heavy rain turned once-placid waterways into raging torrents, forcing weekend evacuations in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Jersey and New York. At least 27 deaths, mostly from drowning, were blamed on heavy flooding. "We had eight feet of water in the cellar. It was filled right to the top," said Barbara Meuller, from her home along the Delaware River in Harmony Township, N.J.

Normally smooth as a lake, the Delaware's cocoa-brown water on Sunday raged under a bridge crossing to New Hope, showing off the bits and pieces of the lives it touched. President Clinton on Sunday declared six Pennsylvania counties, covering the towns of Harrisburg, Wilkes Barre and Bloomsburg, a disaster area, and Tom Ridge said he was pressing for federal help for 52 more. "We've got people dead and missing. We've got families walking around in shelters with only the clothes on their backs. We have roads under water and ice," Ridge said.

Unseasonably warm temperatures last week and heavy rain broke up ice jams along streams and creeks and melted mounds of snow on riverbanks in some areas up to 40 inches that had fallen during the region's record-breaking blizzard two weeks ago. In central Pennsylvania, some bridges remained closed and railroad tracks east of Harrisburg were covered, forcing Amtrak to reroute passengers onto buses between the city and Lancaster. In West Virginia, where the flooding topped the 1985 floods that left 47 dead and caused $570 million in damage, the Ohio River crested as high as 10 feet above flood level at Wheeling, as did rivers in the east. "This water i is so powerful," said Gov. Gaston Caperton, who toured the hardest hit areas by helicopter Sunday.

Coke Enjoy a COKE with your PIZZA 203 W. JEFFERIES STREET PH: 489-0244 are worth about $24 million as gold, and probably far more as historical curiosities, he said. First, Tidwell must settle the question of whether the lost Japanese gold is legally his. Tidwell and his investors contend finders are keepers, but the Japanese government has not formally relinquished claim to the gold. Tidwell went to Tokyo in November, where he promised to return all personal effects found on board to Japan.

The bodies entombed in the submarine have probably disintegrated under the crush of water pressure, he said. The 357-foot sub, remarkably intact, sits upright more than three miles underwater in a remote corner of the tropics. It is in international waters, which helps Tidwell's claim. He plans a second trip to the ship site either this spring or in the fall. The first artifacts could come to the surface in 18 months, he said.

Raising the hulk with special foam would be years off. Scientific and historical interest in the project is high, in part because of the research and technology used to find the ship. Tidwell used recently declassified documents to learn about the ship and its sinking, then hired a defense contractor to plot the wreck's location.
