engineer Paul Brown at KV1P radio ministry In Redding Donations will will help pay for tower site Paul Brown may not be a well-known personality at KVIP but he has a big job: Keeping three stations on the air The shareathon provides vital support By Bob Phillips R-S religion reporter This week's listener shareathon is doubly important to Chief Engineer Paul Brown at the KVIP radio ministiy in Redding Pledges and donations will not only help keep Christian programming on die airwaves but also will make the final payment on a 30-acre site in Bella Vista where the AM transmitting facilities will be moved The three-day shareathon which has a goal of $34800 will conclude late tonight The hosts will include Tom Woods operations manager officials said The AM tower is now situated on rental properly along Interstate 5 in south Redding Brown said KVIP has wanted running smoothly The computers coordinate the various Christian programming with introductory remarks by KVIP's five announcers One of them Larry Cardoza also serves as assistant engineer Brown carries a pager wherever he goes in case of a computer problem at one of the stations It might seem like a tremendous burden but Brown accepts the challenge cheerfully The chief engineer said he is deeply encouraged by letters from KVIP listeners He mentioned one that simply said: for being all part of the same Brown said of the ministiy staff members takes a lot of people to make it And been happening since Jan 4 1970 thanks to a dedicated staff and faithful listeners The non-commercial ministiy is entirely supported by its listeners For more details about today's shareathon call 222-4455 ministiy The AM station at 540 on the dial can be heard by listeners from Sacramento to Mount Shasta and from Burney to Weaverville The FM station at on the dial can be received by listeners from throughout the north state and parts of southern Oregon thanks to a series of 12 translators The ministiy also operates KGRV an AM radio station in Winston Ore Once a month Brown travels to the station located near Rose-burg Ore for maintenance work and to the translators when repairs are necessary Sometimes that can be a challenge For example two months ago KVIP leased a helicopter so Brown could make repairs on a translator on Mt Bradley west of Dunsmuir At other times Brown will rely on the 4-wheel-drive vehicle or snowcat to reach a translator located in a mountainous area other duties include making sure three computer systems in Redding are responsible for a major part of the radio ministry: Keeping three stations on the air Pacific Cascade Communications Corp is the non-profit organization that operates the radio ment All the supplies and labor were donated by Christian businessmen in the Redding area Brown 44
