Paga 13 The Gaffney Ledger, Friday, December 7, 1990 BP plans to fine oil change violators By JANICE DURHAM Staff Writer The Gaffney Board of Public Works will fine local car wash businesses if the car washes continue to allow customers to change their oil at their establishments. In a meeting Thursday night, Board Manager Dick Crater announced that some local car washes aren't in compliance with DHEC regulations when they allow customers to drain dirty motor oil into the sewer line. Of the eight car washes in "Blatant violators of DHEC pretreatmentregulations will be fined over the next two months," said Crater. One business, whose name Crater said he will announce at the next Board meeting, will be fined between $10,000 and $50,000 for noncompliance. The Board also has a bone to pick with Piedmont Municipal Power Agency (PMPA) of which it is an affiliate.

The Board approved recommendations concerning employee retirement accounts and vacations. 3. A recommendation that each Board employee receive a ham and fruit basket was approved by the Board. 4. The Board reviewed and passed the budget report for November 1990.

PMPA must grant approval before the Gaffney Board of Public Works can implement the plan that Crater estimated would save the Board $50,000 to $100,000 a month, a savings that would be reflected in the utility customers' monthly bill. PMPA was to have the report to the Board by the end of this month but, since Tuesday's meeting was cancelled, Crater is doubtful that he will have the report before next year. "They said they would have the report to us by the last of December they ought to have told us that they were going to cancel the meeting and why this is no way to do business," said Crater who added that the Board is prepared to battle it out in court if need be.

Peak shaving is one of five strategies that the Board hopes will hold down costs. In other business, the Board was presented with an interim six months finacial review which was conducted by Cline, Brant, Kochenower and Inc. Under old business: 1.
