Robbs ran just 10 laps in the Danny Queen Laguna and finished 29th in the Grand National qualifying race.

He started 13th In the Permatex 300 and had hopes of a good finish, but fell out after only five laps with oil pressure problems in the Chevy Monte Carlo owned by Johnny Newman of Memphis, and maintained by the Queen crew. Duvall, after starting 12th, ran in the top five most of the race and at one point was running second. He was forced to pit with a flat tire with only three laps remaining and dropped from fifth to eighth. He picked up $1,500 for his efforts. (AP) -Cale Yarborough's second place finish in the Daytona 500 Grand National stock car race Sunday, coupled with a win in the only other race so far this season, has boosted the two-time national champion's lead in the Winston Cup points standings. Figures' released today by the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing showed Yarborough leading Benny Parsons, 360 points to 345. Parsons was third Sunday and second in the other race. Daytona 500 winner Bobby Allison jumped to fifth overall. Yarborough is trying for an unprecedented third consecutive national title.

"What have I got to do to win here?" Baker said in anguish after congratulating winner Bobby Allison. "Once I almost had a lap on everybody. Then late in the race, even with the motor skipping and messing around, I could outrun Bobby and everybody else. "I saw the oil pressure going down and down and down. Oh, if it would just last a few more laps.

Then, wham. All of a sudden. I felt like crying. "When that oil pressure needle started dropping, so did my heart." As the number of laps left diminished, there seemed to be an expectant air in the crowd of they were waiting to see how Baker and Allison, another hard luck case here, were going to lose it. "It's so tough to have a car that strong and have something like that happen when you're so close to winning," Baker said.

"But I guess I should be used to it by now. This sure isn't the first time this has happened." The popular, quick-quipping veteran from Charlotte, N.C. has been in 16 Daytona 500s since 1961. He has led 10 of the last 11 and, by unofficial count, run into bad luck while leading most if not all of them. A year ago here, Baker was leading about the halfway point when a slower car drove him into the wall; he still limped home third.

Early in the race two years ago, his car's motor exploded in flames while he was in front. It's always been something like that. Baker was able to see something positive in the way things ended Sunday.

"If Bobby's luck can change, so can mine," Baker said. "Bobby's the only guy I know with luck anywhere near as bad as mine." DAI DAILY 7:00 :00 7 STARTS the many ways Buddy Baker has found or how many ways have found him to lose the Daytona 500 auto race. But if there were, it would be hard to convince people it was fact, not fiction. Baker, one of the seven million-dollar career winners in Grand National stock car racing, suffered the heartbreak of a blown engine Sunday as he was fighting for the lead just 15 miles from the finish of the 20th running of stock car racing's biggest race. It kept alive his record of excruciatingly bad luck at Daytona International Speedway.

The engine blew. His luck in the Firecracker 400, the other Grand National race run here in the summer, has been at least as bad. Furman Names Sheridan GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) Dick Sheridan, an assistant football coach at Furman University for the past five years and a former South Carolina high school coach of the year, has been named the Paladins' new head coach. The announcement came a little more than a day after Art Baker announced he was resigning as Furman head coach to take the same position at The Citadel.

Sheridan was the unanimous choice of a search committee, and Furman Athletic Director John West said when the players learned of the appointment, "they all stood and applauded for over five minutes. We finally had to ask them to stop." An Augusta, native and 1964 graduate of the University of South Carolina, Sheridan has coached Furman's quarterbacks and receivers since 1973. His high school coaching record was 37-8-1. Sheridan spent three years at Orangeburg-Wilkinson, where he won the state Class AAAA title in 1971 with a 13-0 season, and a year at Airport High in Cayce before rejoining Baker, his former boss at Eau Claire High in Columbia. vain 'J Pall you can eatiC SHOWS: 7 9 miii Si.ffSitftm STP MOTOR OIL quart ygo a.
