JIBS WEEK our focus Ras on Adrian Goodwin from Beeston. Adrian. 33. is an insurance agent with a national company. He refereeing fa 1988 and is now Class One, having been on the linesman's list of the Mama League for two IE4IOOO.

one of which was spent on the superees istary now in his fourth season on the referees list. EDnOWRM NOTTINGHAM FOREST'S continued success eery is almost unbelievable. They might easily have gone down to Everton in the League game at the City Ground a week ago but didn't. They went to Goodison Park for the League Cup game on Tuesday with a patched-up midfield, gave their opponents a goal start, and still triumphed. Everton could be forgiven for feeling confident that they would tumble the Cup holders but instead they suffered their first defeat on English soil this season and now the quarter-final brings Brighton to Trentside.

The Reds' fans did well to express their joy at Goodison but progress in the competition was not achieved without cost. For all but the first few minutes of the encounter Burns played with a knee injury and fi nally limped ff eight minutes from the end. Acute His was an heroic effort. Now, amid all the jubilation, the stark fact emerges that the Reds cannot carry on their record-breaking run much longer unless new men are signed to augment the thinning ranks. I am not telling Clough or Taylor anything they don't know.

but with each passing game the problem becomes more acute. Apart from a few overarms players the transfer market seems to be at a standstill. Clough and Taylor are just the men to change that and I can imagine they are busily engaged behind the scenes. One player who would not disgrace the Reds' high-quality squad and I hasten to add this is my view is Derby's Gerry Daly. He is a right-sided player and Forest have not too many of them.

Over the last six weeks he has been mentioned in connection with a number of clubs and Tommy Docherty is not the man to shrug aside a deal if the price is right. I imagine what could be a stumbling block is Daly's liking for spending the cloee season in America. He made big money there last summer and could do so again. But I cannot see Messrs. Clough and Taylor taking kindly to, such a trip.

Both have argued recently that no player can give his best over 12 months and those that try are in danger of burning themselves out. 1 know John O'Hare has been to America in the last two close seasons but he is a veteran, reaching the end of a distinguished career. Although he is in the first team at the moment this is the outcome of Forest's critical injury list. If Daly wants to return to the USA I don't think he will interest the Forest management but they could offer him a lucrative contract to induce a change of mind. Taylor, in his Football Poet column last week, set tongues wagging when he talked about having a bid in for a player which could turn out to be a British transfer record.

It sounded very intriguing but if the man is with a club which has no desire to part, it's a state of affairs It came as a great source of satisfaction last Monday when the pair dispelled all doubts about their intention to stay at the City Ground. As I hinted a week ago I expected this to be the outcome of the Sunderland bid for their services. The 'result is that Clough and Taylor have been given a new seven yearscontract. The first four they will fulfil their present managerial role and for the last three they will provide their services in a consultancy capacity. They feel that after another four years they will have had enough of active management and- presumably will have accrued enough of this world's goods to allow for a more leisurely future.

Present intentions could change in the distant future but I would pity any subsequent manager who took over from "our Brian and then had the pleasure of being told just how he should tackle the job. They don't come any harder than Clough when he is in full flight on soccer. For goodness sake Brian forget the consultancy angle and keep to your forte of outright football management. If you don't. anybody who tries to fill your chair at the City Ground, do his own thing, and listen to how the job should be done from the consultant would be a candidate for the nut house! Forest's great triumph at Goodison was achieved on the same night as a gallant failure in the Anglo- Scottish Cup by Mansfield Town.

They achieved a deserved 1-0 victory against Burnley in the semi-final at Turf Moor but then went out 8-7 on penalties. It was a bitter blow for Arthur Patrick's team and they must have reflected ruefully on the stack of chances squandered in the first leg at Field Mill. Things have not gone too well for the Stags this season but their Turf Moor display. which followed which offers little hope of People constantly quiz' for names but they have no chance of being satisfied. Even the Forest committee don't know the men Clough and Taylor want to sign.

They are informed if and when a deal is going through. Adrian also referees is the Central Alliance. Adrian's interests outside soccer include squash, badminton and mai. Bond hits at referee standards ONE OF the latest verbal attacks on Football League referees came from John Bond, manager of Norwich City. He was commenting after the recent Chelsea Norwich game (3-3) when he is reported to have said: "People may wonder why I should be so concerned but I feel the time really must, come when something must be done to improve the standard of refereeng.

League referee George "They turn up each Saturday and are unable to grasp the difficulties professional people in the game experience each week. Until they become a realistic part of soccer then they will never be able to do their job properly." Mr.

Bond is. of course, entitled to his opinion but HIS team aren't exactly breaking any records this season so far. I have been asked to remind all referees and Flint from Kirkby-cil- Ashfield. "Probably the best spot is just outside the far post and just inside the line. From there you can judge the flight of the ball and see most of the action taking place in front of the goal. A colleague offers the following suggeefion: "You are also well placed to see if a goal is scored or to give any offside decision.

being in a good position to give goal decisions is more important. Football Post Saturday, 11, 1978 5 on the away League victory achieved at Lincoln. was a clear indication that better things are ahead. Talking about Lincoln, it came as something of a shock to learn that Colin Murphy, Notts second in command, had decided tojoin the Imps as their manager. Jimmy Sirrel, the Notts County chief, will be sorry to lose him at a time when the Magpies are having such a shaky time.

One understands Murphy's concern to better himself. In his days at the City Ground he was always considered a bright coach with a great future. Then he went to Derby in the wake of Dave Mackay and when the Scotsman was ousted, Murphy was thrust into the managerial seat, perhaps before he was quite ready for such a momentous step. Predictable Even so, he was not the complete failure some le forecast and although it was predictable that the board would eventually turn to the vastly more experienced Tommy Docherty, at least Murphy ha the First Division flag flying at the Baseball So it was that he found himself at Meadow Lane where he has had a good understanding with Sirrel. By this time management was in his blood, however.

and when leaderless Lincoln. even this early in the season. were faced with the drop to Division IV, they saw in Murphy the man to turn the tide. We can only hope that he is successful but that does not help Sirrel to till the vacancy which has arisen. I understand the Notts' manager is wasting no time in his search and I can only hope he is able to find a personality to give him the right kind of backing.

The Magpies are hardly looking the promotion hopefuls we had anticipated. a point a match but showing an unhealthy goal difference. Fortunately the season is not that far advanced and the leeway can be made up. When I saw Notts play early on they looked capab le of doing well. It is unfortunate.

however, that Green signed with such high hopes from Chesterfield, has failed to make any impact. When the England team to meet Czechoslovakia on November 28, was announced on Wednesday, it was immediately noted that Forest were without a representative in the squad. But instead of arousing general criticism it has engendered a high note of optimism among supporters. It is widely believed that all three of the club's players chasing honours will be in the senior ranks to meet Czechoslovakia. at Wembley.

Shilton and Woodcock are considered certainties and Anderson's outstanding form, of late, could win him the right back position. His sterling defensive qualities and ability to score spectacular goals on the break make him something special. As a postscript to the Burns injury came his cartilage operation in Harlow Wood on Thursday. He will be out of action for some time and it makes even more pointed my earlier remarks on strengthening the squad. Success is being achieved with a very thin Red line at the moment! HARRY E.
