CROWNED-IF BUT FOR A SUMMER DAY IN PERIL NS In Formby, the water supply altusUou is evitleaL Half a million gallons are used daily in the district. Water Board warn that only stringent economy will stave off further restrictions, which will occur if consumers take more than can be supplied. While most farmers are concerned with the Immediate future, it is those with dairy herds who are worst hit at the moment. Milk yields are very low because the pasture is withered, particularly on sandy soil. With the feeding stuffs allowance cut during summer months, the cattle are being fed on hay and stock potatoes, described as a "Godsend" by one dairyman.

Another dairyman forecast milk rationing within a few days. Though this year's hay crop was good, the drought is wrecking the farmer's chances of having a second crop, on which they bank every year. "Everything is feeling the pinch, we need rain badly," said a farmer. "Luckily we have been having some fairly heavy dews and that has helped to keep stuff going." Harvest prospects are causing worry, though wheat is standing up to the drought better than oats. Stop Waste Market gardeners are praying for rain to give their vegetables size, worst affected being cabbages and peas.

One consolation Is that the fruit season is one of the best for a number of years, mainly due to the mild weather and absence of late frosts. To conserve the dwindling water supplies, Southport Water Board urge that rigid economy be used, particularly amongst householders. Watering the garden with hosepipes Is banned. Dripping taps cause thousands of gallons to be wasted. Also watching the skies are people with rain water.

barrels. any of the barrels are dry or dangerously low. In the economy drive is Formby Laundry, which uses thousands of gallons a day. "We are doing what we can," says Mr. J.

Tickle, the manager. "There are no restrictions yet, but If there are It will mean laundry service will be delayed considerably." Downholland Brook is getting low, and the stream running from the sandhills through Formby is a mere trickle. .11111011 41 11101 I Mr. Robert Mawdaley. Dominie Retired-But Carries On I.IBSCRIPTIONS for the presentation to Mr.

G. W. Tippett, retiring headmaater of St. Peter's Boys' School, are still being received by Canon H. P.

Barsley, Vicar of St. Peter's. The presentation will be on Tuesday, July 19th, after the annual parochial dedication service. "We are hoping to give Mr. Tippett a cheque." said the Vicar.

"We feel, however, that there may be some of his many friends who have not known of our intention to show our appreciation to Mr. Tippett after 27 years' loyal service to the school." No successor has been appointed yet. Meanwhile, Mr. Tippett, who officially retired in May, Is still continuing to look after the Interests of the school. Tories Find Recruits Formby Conservatives' recruiting drive, launched just a year ago, has been a great success.

During the period, the women Conservatives reached and passed the 1,000 mark and are still making substantial progress, Young Conservatives have increased by Just under 50 per cent. RESCUED BROTHER OF BOY HE SAVED LAST YEAR QCREAMS for help reached the ears of Mr. Li Ernest Burton as he lazed on the edge of West Shore Pool, Deganwy, N. Wales, on Saturday afternoon. Mr.

Burton, stocky fruit farmer of Pinetree Nurseries, Wicks Lane, Formby, looked up. So began an amazing coincidence. Boys were swimming about and yelling 'Grab him, he's and I saw a lad's head just below the surface of the water," Mr. Burton told a "Formby Times" I dived in, got hold of him and had the surprise of my life. "1 recognised the lad as the younger brother of a boy whom I had saved from drowning in the same pool last year." After artificial respiration, 7-years-old Ronnie Morris, of Llandudno Junction was able to go home with his brother, 12 years old Brian.

Last year Mr. Burton effected a. double rescue, saying Brian and another lad who had gone in to help Brian and was taken under. Mr. Burton, a strong swimmer, was at one time athletic and life-saving instructor to 130 Squadron (Formby) A.T.C.

Police investigatings are still proceedings. AU stations In the Lancashire Constabulary area have been notified. A spokesman at Divisional headquarters, Seaforth, said that the thief or thieves left no signs which pointed to any known person with a British criminal record. Not opened to the public, castellated Formby Hall, long the home of the Formby family, has few familiar with Its interior layout During the years, it was occupied continuously by Army personnel. The ransacked study was an office.

More than 150 soldiers were accommodated in the 10 w. Ispacious rooms for six years. Needle in haystack: Thieves took away keys, leaving Mr. Formby unable to lock ravaged drawers or unlock undamaged ones. "They may have dropped them outside," he said, "but it will be an impossibility to find them again." Entering between 4 and 6 a.m., through a ground floor window In the servants' hall, burglars took the keys from the bedroom and made straight for the study.

Opening closed shutters to obtain light, they ransacked drawers in the square mahogany desk of owner Mr. J. F. L. Formby (pictured).

"I wish I weren't such a sound sleeper," mourned Mr. Formby, as he told a 'Times' reporter of his losses. "Obviously it someone who knew the layout of the house very well. COMPETENT WORK "They went about their work quietly and competently without taking any wtvng turnings, and must have been out of the house within a quarter of an hour." Busily rummaging through drawers and locked cupboards, thieves ignored a large silver penstand, silver ashtray and clock openly displayed on top ot the desk.
