2 Dr. Fred Barbee told police vdiun tarily today that a story he had told them eight days ago of someone knocking on his door and shooting him in the stomach was untrue. The shot, he said, was fired by himself accidentally. 1 He said it happened when he was checking to see whether a .32 automatic pistol was loaded before packing it in a suitcase. The gun went off and shot him, in the stomach, he said.

The officers talked to neighbors who had neither heard the shot nor seen anyone near the Barbee This morning the 30-year-old doc tor told hospital officials to phone Sheriff Cummings and tell him he was ready to confess to the truth Sheriff Curniags and District Attorney Roberts went to Copperas Cove and Barbee told them story: He said he was packing a suit- ease preparing to go to Sulphur Springs to pick up his wife and three-year-old daughter wno naa gone there to take Mrs. Barbee 's father home. He said he was sitting on a couch and picked up a .32 auto matic pistol he was going to take with him. He pulled the slide back to see if it was loaded.

When he started to close it the hammer slipped and the gun fired into his stomach, Barbee said. Sheriff Cummings said he did not "know what caused Barbee to tell us that lie, but this is the truth of it and he said he will take a polygraph test to prove it" Barbie's statement said he told the story through "confusion, pain and fear." District Attorney Roberts said unless other developments crop up he will consider the case closed. Isaac S. Meeks, Former Coryell Citizen Dies in Waco Funeral services for Isaac S. Meeks, 67, were held July 31.

at Compton Chapel in Waco, Rev. Dalton Havard and Rev. W. D. Boswell officiating, burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, in Waco.

He died in a Waco hospital, July 30. Mr. Meeks was a former resident of Coryell County, and i brother of the late R. E. Meeks.

I I ,81, Hii I Wi it House Approves Construction Bill For Fort Hood The House of Representatives in Washington yesterday passed and sent to the Senate a one and a half billion dollar military con struction bill. Included in this bill was $4 130,000 for Fort Hood: $379,000 for Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Killeen and $34,000 for Gray Air Force Base. Hopson on Dean's Honor Roll at O.

Hop- son of Gatesville, Texas a student in the graduate' school at Okla homa State University the past semester, was one of 1,805 stu dents named to the Dean's Honor Roll for outstanding academic achievement. Only those students carrying IS college hours or more were el gible for the honor, and they were required to achieve a average with no grade lower than Reg istrar Raymond Girod said. Miss Cayce Wins Top Honors in Sales Miss Vera Cayce, teacher in the Wichita Falls Schools won top honors as part time world dook Encyclopedia representative lor 31 sales in 31 days, in Wichita Falls. The Worldbook Party was given at the Stattler Hilton Hotel.

Dallas, Friday evening, August 2. She was among six out of over 250, who had most sales. Miss Cayce was their guest st the hotel for all activities. She is the sis ter of Mrs. Victor Harper of Ogles- Local Riding Club Wins at Moody The Gatesville Riding Club is very proud of themselves for hav ing won the trophy at the Moody Horse Show, last Thursday, witn 20 horses in the street parade, the most horses from any one club.

Texas Angora Goat Raisers Association Show and Sale on August 23 and 24, 1957. An invitation la extended to all Angora breeders and producers to attend this big event. 152 bucks and 38 does are en tcred in the show. This number is only a portion of the registered animals presented for entry, A se-lection committee of the Texas Angora Goat Raisers Association picked only the animals of sup erior quality from the number pre sented. The sale will feature some of the best registered Angora Bucks and Does in Texas. You are urged to attend. Two Gatesville Sailors Take Part In Sea Parade SEATTLE, Wash. Kenneth Edmondson, fireman, USN, son ef Mr. and Mrs.

Ray Edmondson et Gatesville, Texas and Jerry D. Sullivan, seaman, USN, son ef Mrs. Eudell Sullivan of 1504 E. Saunders, Gatesville, aboard the heavy cruiser USS St Paul, will visit Seattle, Wash, Aug. 7-12, dor Ing the annual Sea Fair.

Twenty-two U. S. Navy ships will visit the Northwestern port for tAa event and will take part In a Sea Parade in Elliott Bay. All ships will be open to the public during their stay. The Sea Fair is a 104ay pageant of spectator and participation en tertainment designed to point out the Puget Sound area as one of the boating capitals of the world.

Maritime features will include a sailboat regatta, salmon fishing derbies, crew and outboard races. water-ski shows, a decorated yacht parade and the U. S. championship race for unlimited hydroplane speedboats on Lake Washington. Pentecostals Will Hold Revival A Pentecostal meeting will be gin in Levita, Sunday evening at 8 o'clock, August 11.

Secretary Wilson Orders Halt To Civilian Hiring Secretary of Defense Charles Wilson has ordered the military services not to hire any more ei viclans in order to reduce payroll expenses. Just what effect, if any, this will have on the Coryell county civilians now employed at Fort Hood is not known, but It Is thought that it will only effect replacements as those now employ ed leave their jobs.

3. CatesvUIe. A FRANKIE ROSS Franlde Ross, Polio Victim, Now at Gonzales Gonzales, Aug. 7 Twenty year old Frankie Ross, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

It Ross of Gatesville, is climbing a long and rocky road toward her goal of becoming dress designer. Frankie came to Gonzales Warm Springs Rehabilitation Foundation recently to improve her gait train ing and recover from hip surgery, In few weeks she plans to re turn to Scott and White hospital for more surgery. "They tell me if the surgery I plan to undergo in a few weeks Is successful 111 be able to get a round pretty well," said Frankie "Then maybe I can go to the Uni versity of Houston and become the dress designer I ve always wanted to be." A polio victim of 13 years ago, Mis Ross says this will be tne third operation on her hip. "But I dont mind the surgery, if it will help me to walk again," said Frankie. "I'm very fortunate, my mother and father are not only parents to me, they are pals and friends too.

June 195S New Date To Make Application For Social Security More than 100 disabled workers in the Temple district have quail fled for social security disability benefits and will receive their first check during August, Maurice Chastain, district manager of the Temple Social Security Office, an nounced today. la making this announcement Chaitain sUted that action is be ing taken as speedily as. possible on all disability applications and that disabled workers who may not yet have received notice of final action on their application will be receiving their first checks in coming months. No further ac tion is necessary on their part, he said. Persons who have been disabled a long time, now have until June 30, 1958, to file an application.
