Hit Oateiulle lilwscnflff 1 ki mmmwm nnu aiMK-ruRUIVI POST-erf to leava for California this 'week, but the Oakland brain-trust ruled that he and another Raider I d-t I George Bland, should be excused from the early camp for quarterbacks and rookies. July 11. 1969Sec. 3. Pjr.

7 Johnny Arreaga amazes local golfers with the smooth way he takes the local Country Club course apart on every tour. Arraaga consistent-ly shoots In sub-par figures and he makes It look easy A veteran Gatesville star, Joe Skelton, Is also reported at the top of his game. greens were opened, for play last week and In less tlian three weeks three other new greens Nos. 2, 4 and 8 may be ready for traffic Country Club officials are expected to soon definitely peg the dates for ihe '69 partnership tournament annual partnership golf tournament, usually held in May but postiKimxl this year because the lay-out was in the upheaval of renovation last spring, may fee held as early as late August since th? course Is blossoming into shape sooner than exioct-cd The new No. 3 and No, 5 Supply teams finish In a dead heat in the Minor League race.

This would mean a special play-off between these scrappy rivals for the 6t flag and the right to represent Gatesville in a Midget League district tournament at Woodway. The Gatesville Country Club UDDffii DAYS VI) THREE BIG FRIDAY, SATURDAY, REG, $3.98 GAL. FOR THREE DAYS llfr tJl' ONLY gallons for Thef 1969 edition of Dave Campbell'! Texas Football magailne hit the newsstands Wednesday. In this authorlta tive publication, the Hornet eleven Is figured for a fifth-place finish In District 13- AAA's grid title chase. Rated the loop's top teams are defending champion Belton, Rockdale, Taylor and Lock-hart.

Ranked below the Hornets are Copperas Cove, Del Valle and Lampasas. Clyde (Bulldog) Turner' Is now a Gentle Ben of a rancher at Pidcoke and appears 'several light years removed from any football trenches, but there are still legions of believers who swear he is the greatest center who ever lived. Turner received another signal honor this week when he was named one of the centers (along with Temple's Ki Aldrich) on the All-South west football team of the past 50 years, selected by a Football Writers Association of Ameri ca panel. Members of the mythical team will be eligible for selection on the all-time All-America college team which will be selected by the FWAA In connection with the centennial year celebration of college football. The all-time team is to be picked later this month.

Bulldog is the only man on the 19-man SW team who did n't play on a Southwest Conference team he played his college football at Hardin-Sim- mons in 1937-38-39. He is one of ten Southwes terriers who also have received recognition into the National Football Hall of Fame and he's also a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Cotton Davidson, who seems to find the fountain of youth each July, will report to the Oakland Raiders' training camp In Santa Rosa, on July 21 for his 12th season in professional football. He has been working out daily 'and is in top shape And If you think he can't still drill a pass dowhfield, mosey out to McKamie Sta dium any late afternoon and just watch him Cotton first thought he would have Jack Bell, after being associated with Gatesville Hornets for seven years, should be right at home at Athens, where he is to be the new first assistant football coach. The Athens schoolboy athletes are called Hornets, too Bell, delight- ed with his new Job, said that he and his family "certainly hate to leave Gatesville, as we have really enjoyed living here" He also said he wished the best of luck to Coach Jack Moss and the new GHS staff.

Now It can be told the four teams competing in the Junior League district baseball tournament at Lions League Park the week of July 21 will be the champions of the Bi-County League, the Braxos Valley League, the Milam County League and the Gatesville League. Bl-County is headquartered in McGregor, Braxos Valley In Mart, and Milam In Cameron Gatesville Commissioner Jim Miller has moved up several games on the local schedules so that all regular-season play at Lions League Park will be completed no later than July 21. On July 24 will begin a 2-out-of-3 game Freshman League pennant play-off between the winners of the circuit's two divisions. The champion will move Into a district tourney at Euless. The Scott's Furniture base ball nine has been steadily climbing in the Junior League standings and one of the big reasons is the smoking bat swung by catcher Don Jones.

The husky youngster is hitting at better than a .500 cup The thinking here is that both the Guaranty Bank and Scott team made their moves too late to catch the front-running National Bank crew Pearl, which has been having its troubles in its first year in the Jun ior League, experienced more grief last week when its ace slugger, Stanley Stanford, was hit in the eye by a pitched ball. There was no serious injury, but Stanford had to leave the game and missed some later contests. Their only losses have been to each oth-ei.

The eventual winner of the pennant derby will play in Midget League district tourna ment in Woodway In early August. Both the league leaders scbr ed smashing triumphs last week. The food store nine won over Rotunda, 34-6, on homers by Pete Jones, Ray Blanchard and Joe Smith and a triple by Danny Wright. Jones also did the pitching. The Powell club sank Miller Motor, 29-0, on the shut-out pitching of Todd Hardin and the slugging of Jody Richards, Harry Culberson, Roger Smith and Pat Ortega.

The Koch's Enco team erupt ed for 14 runs in the first inning and went on to down Martin's Cleaners, 27-7, last Thursday night. Joe Brookshire and Bob Baker starred for the winners. Monday night the Koch team was enjoying a 4-0 lead over Miller Motor going into the fourth but the Miller crew rallied to knot the count and then scored the winning run in the last frame for a 5-4 decision.
