board has disclosed it is investigating the source of moqey invested in the Riviera Hotel on the Las Vegas strip by the ownership group Gambling licenses sought by four men belonging to this group James Blankenship Marven Krause Jack Lieberman and Irving Perelman were deferred pending further scrutiny of the matter Meanwhile the board1 recom mended approval of gaming per mits for two more members of the operating group at the Riv iera headed by Gus Greenbaumformer president of the lamingo Hotel in Las Vegas This group has leased thehotel for $1250000 annually the former operators whoretain ownership of the prop erty and constitute what isknown as the ownership group Board members recommended gaming permits be granted toSam Weiss a Los Angeles pro duce dealer and Ben Goffsteinformer associate with Green baum at the lamingo Weiss isinvesting $20000 and Goffstein $50000 Actions on applications of JackMcElroy Joe Rossenberg BenKellerman and Lester Antle also seeking gaming permits as mem bers of the operating group were deferred because investigation oftheir backgrounds is incomplete Status Unclear Board members said the owner ship group of the Riviera hadfailed to clarify the status of the finances which was the reason for deferral of the four new ap plicants i Board member Newell Hancock reported the board had a crew of auditors working at the Riviera adding they have finished their work we will have pin pointed some large amounts of un identified Board members indicated theentire ownership group would be called up for questioning in the near future 1 The board deferred action upon an application by 12 men most of them Las Vegas gamblers seek rested on a charge of attempt to walk out of a supermarket and failing to pay $9 worth of gro ceries although he had $26000 worth of checks and $900 in cash in his pockets oley described George Bowers as a sad and said he was a narcotics addict de lusions of He said he did not believe George Bowers had any connection with the pro posed Boulder Club operation Board members indicated they were also investigating past ac tivities of Chitwood an Arizona gambler and Newland a former deputy sheriff at Tucson in the county where Chitwood formerly operated When board members said there were too many unanswered in their minds to take any action but deferral oley urged them to act upon those Ledger in charge The body will be accompanied to Pasadena for interment Mr Balz who was employed as a painter in Reno died on Monday Harold Penny Manslaughter Case Near End Both Cases Closed inal Arguments Today Both sides rested in the man slaughter trial of Harold Penny yesterday afternoon after a tail light and a question over intoxi cation loomed as the key issues in the case The jury of eight women and four men which is hearing the testimony in the court of Judge Grant Bowen is expected to hear concluding arguments today Mr Penny was on the stand for most of the court day yesterday He is charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Le Roy Bertrand of Reno who was killed on April 20 when his vehicle was involved in a collision with one driven by Penny Assistant District Attorney Ed win Mulcahy told the jury early in the case that Penny had been drinking at' the time of the acci dent and that this fact was partly responsible for the crash car struck the Bertrand car in the left rear Mr Mulcahy and Defense At torney John Bartlett were at odds yesterday morning over when the court should admit evidence that Penny had not submitted to a blood alcohol test after the acci dent Judge Bowen admitted the testimony Two deputy sheriffs later testified that Penny had re fused to take the test because he said such a test had caused trouble on a previous occasion The jury heard Penny testify that he did not see the tail lights on the Bertrand car before the accident and Bartlett has ques tioned several witnesses closely on whether the tail lights were working on the vehicle Deputy sheriffs yesterday said that the right rear tail light was working several days after the crash but that the left side of the car was so badly damaged that it was im possible to determine the condi tion of the left tail light QUICKIES By Ken Reynolds Warden Gets Praise After Prison Check By UNITED PRESS Sen orest Lovelock chairman of the senate institutions commit tee said today following an in spection of the state prison that he felt Warden Art Bernard done a marvelous job there dur ing the past five The Reno Republican said he felt Bernard to be and had run the prison in eco nomical He added that in his opinion Barnard should be kept in the job as long as possible He suggested consideration be given to creating a state prison board consisting of representa tives of labor business and other segments of the population empowered to retain the warden in office long as he does a good At present the wardenship is a political plum which usually changes hands every time a new governor 'is elected Assemblyman Bruce Barnum Yerington Democrat and chair man of the assembly institutions committee said following the prison inspection that things Bernard has accomplished over there are Kansas Driver Thanks Police Police expected to meet a hopping mad citizen Monday night when they temporarily im pounded the keys of a parked au tomobile Instead they got the grateful thanks of a Kansas tourist who admitted he had committed a number of driving errors and was better off for having been de prived of the use of his car The man said he drove all afternoon re sulted in arrest of one motorist Robert Schmitt 41 1014 Manor Drive was charged with reckless driving after his car skidded 100 feet and collided with the rear of a vehicle driven by George Thomas 24 101 Ralston St sheriffs deputies said Schmitt was released from cus tody on $100 bail pending hearing University Students Hear Lecture About Philippine Problems Lectures on the political and commercial problems in the Phil ippine Islands were presented by Dr Ricardo Sabella to the Uni versity of Nevada student body on riday Dr Sabella professor of eco nomics ar Eastern raternity Men Attract Police Police broke up a college fra ternity prank Monday night and reported the three culprits plead ed for anonymity because of their in their fraternity house Officers did not
