There Are No Such Insists Air orce After Eight Years of Study WASHINGTON Oct 25 (IP) The Air orce wound up an eight year study of flying saucers today by concluding there is no such thing But it alerted the public to expect radical new planes soon that could give the of being Air Secretary Donald A Quarles said an investigation of almost 5000 sight ings produced evidence of the existence of the popularly termed flying He made public a 316 page book summarizing the inquiry However Quarles noted that several new planes of radical design now are in the works and cautioned that are now entering a period of avia tion technology in which air craft of unusual configuration and flight characteristics wall begin to He said new planes will rise vertically without benefit of runway and will zoom away in level supersonic flight pos sibly giving illusion of the so called flying Quarles took the wraps off an Air orce contract with Avro Ltd of Canada to pro duce what has been popularly described as a flying saucer The Air orce conceded the Avro vehicle result in disc shaped aircraft somewhat to the public concept of a flying saucer Quarles also announced that the Air first jet powered vertical rising air plane will fly from Edwards Air orce Base Calif in a few days It is a delta wnnged ship built by Ryan Aeronautical Corp San Diego Calif Quarles pointed out that other countries also can de velop such planes His state ment recalled a recent report that planes' of weird shape and performance had been sighted Strip Tease High Above City Street NEW YORK Oct 25 A pretty former WAC and missionary staged a striptease on a fire escape five floors above an upper Manhattan street today Her performance delighted scores of passersby Police said Miss Eleanor Casazza 40 announced the act by crawling out on the fire escape and hurling a barrage of bottles to the street As a crowd collected she be gan removing her clothes one garment at a time Two policemen summoned by a neighbor crept up behind Miss Casazza on the fire escape and pulled her back in her apartment just as she was about to remove her last gar ment She was taken to Bellevue Hospital for observation WilTSbe Wed? hared singer Godfrey fired in April The other employes who got the axe today in the latest of a series of sudden shakeups in radio and television family were Jerry Bresler musical conductor of Talent Scouts and announcer George Bryan Puck had been co pro ducer of Talent Scouts God evening program Like La Rosa The dismissals followed much the same pattern of surprise which accompanied the firing of 16 other The most spectacular was that of singer La' Rosa in October 1953 La Rosa was dismissed during a television program with no notice Puck sealed his doom when he announced his engagement a source close to the Godfrey programs said The sultry Miss Marlowe was fired by Godfrey on last April 15 and married Puck on May 6 duties with the God frey family have been whittled down steadily since Estes Kefauver (D Tenn) as the leading contenders Prison Toured by Newsmen As Cruelty Charge Refuted By ROBERT BENNYHO United Press Staff Correspondent CARSON CITY Nev Oct 25 Warden Art Bernard staged a to inspection of the state prison today to refute published charges the institutionwas a and other accusations that prisoners were subjected to inhuman cruelties Making the inspection were the members of the board of prison commissioners three legislators and a score of newsmen Members of the prison board included Gov Charles Russell Attorney General Harvey Dick erson and Secretary of State John Koontz Present also were Sen orest Lovelock of Reno and Assemblyman Bruce Bar num of Yerington chairmen re spectively of the senate and as sembly institutions committees and Assemblyman James Wood also of Reno Every corner of the prison was visited including or a row of solitary confinement cells in the basement of the prison ad ministration building The inspection tour 'followed publication of charges uy a Las Vegas newspaper (Review Jour nal) that four inmates subpoenaed as defense witnesses at the recent murder trial of three prisoners accused of causing the murder of a guard during a prison break a year ago had been thrown into solitary confinement as a reprisal measure The prison commissioners in vestigated the charge and report ed the prisoners were put into solitary confinement for staging a riotous demonstration the night after they appeared in court smashing toilet fixtures and light bulbs and causing a night long demonstration Display Damage The cells occupied by the pris oners were exhibited Broken por celain from the smashed toilet fix tures pieces of broken light bulbs and debris littered the aisle in front of the cells Bernard said he had given CONVICTS Page 9 Col 1) Mystery Prowler Plagues amily Vicious Attacks GRINNELL Iowa Oct 25 Police Chief Waldo Johnson called on all his crime fighting ex perience today to catch the unknown enemy who is waging a murderous vendetta against his own family The assailant had set fire to the bed of son while the 7 year old boy was sleeping in it and knocked his wife unconscious with an ax Johnson admitted he has no idea of the identity of the prowler who has twice invaded his home But he assumed the attacker was an unbalanced man who had a personal reason for hating him And he relied on "routine police to catch his enemy before he strikes again Both attacks occurred riday and were punctuated by a mys terious telephone call asking about the condition of the son At about 2 am riday Johnson and his wife were awakened by the screams of their son James They rushed to his room and found his bed in flames' Johnson snatched up his son who had suffered minor foot burns Then the police chief no ticed that the front door of nis home was open Hangs Up Phone Later that day when Mrs Johnson and the boy were alone in the house the telephone rang Mrs Johnson picked up the re ceiver and a man asked about the condition When she asked who was calling the man hung up Mrs Johnson then drove her son to school and the prowler was waiting for her when she re turned As she entered the kitchen someone struck her from behind with an ax Bloody Ax Recovering consciousness she called her husband Johnson rushed home to find a blood stained ax which he owned lying on the kitchen floor A chair was of 42 persons in six states in a determined crack down on the illegal sale of "goof and other stimulant nar cotics to truck drivers and juveniles Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr announced the drive following a year long undercoyer investigation by agents of the ood and Drug Administration All those alleg edly sold narcotics to truck drivers ederal officials immediately began rounding up those named in the warrants Several arrests were made in North Carolina but officials in some other states in volved said they expected to seize the suspects tomorrow National Drive George Larrick food and drug' commissioner and other federal officials said the move was just the beginning of a nation wide effort to abolish the illegal sale of stimulant drugs Larrick said the narcotis com monly known as or are a menace to the trucking industry and partly are responsible for the growing juvenile delinquency rate The stimulants ampheta mines are used by some truck drivers to keep awake on long hauls They also have been used by youngsters for Larrick said the drugs are tremely when usedby persons unfamiliar with their effects Larrick said the investigation was started when the trucking
