yesterday morning resulted in one injury one afrrest and con siderable damage to a squad truck and the passenger car Jailed for erratic driving was Robert John Nichols 30 126 Wonder St Bail was set at $300 pending municipal court hearing October 11 Injured was wife Marylin who received only a minor cut on the forehead al though she was thrown through the windshield of the sbdan The accident occurred shortly before 4:30 am on ourth St near Chestnut where fire trucks had been called at 3:37 am to lake care of an overstuffed chair afire in an apartment at 321 ourth St The fire was quickly controlled and while one fire truck stood by to mop up the de pickup truck was called to bring ventilating fans to the smoky apartment I The Nichols car a late model Oldsmobile sedan was westbound on ourth St when it clipped the left rear fender of the pickup truck tearing out a chunk of metal and then slammed into the left rear of the fire engine Both fire department vehicles were parked in the outer traffic lane Nichols is said to have told officers that he and his wife had been arguing prior to the crash and he had not seen the parked rig in spite of its flash ing red lights and illumination of a nearby streetlight Mrs Nichols was taken to Washoe Medical Center by ambulance for treatment Although damage to the squad truck did not appear to be exten sive department officials noted that a new booster reel line and shaft would be necessary as well as removal and repair of the rear panel of the vehicle Repairs wTere estimated at from $800 to $1000 The fire it was noted was com paratively small The chair was destroyed a small spot was burned in flooring of Mrs Jake apartment and some smoke damage may have been done 'Members of the Legislative Commission yesterday selected Dr Dean McHenry professor of political science at the University of California at Los Angeles to investi gate the University of Nevada The commission chose Dr McHenry after some of its members had made stinging rertiarks directed at the uni board of regents which last week went on record as opposing both McHenry and the methods of the legis lative commission Dr McHenry 51 who was Interviewed by the commission members early this month was chosen for the job by a unani mous vote of the commission He will be responsible for the spend ing of $25000 appropriated by the state legislature in March for a to investiga tion of the University of Ne vada Administration Under ire The university administration headed by President Minard Stout has been under fire from several sources for more than two years In 1953 Dr Stout fired Dr rank Richardson a biology professor on the charge that he was insubordinate and that he attempted to stir up trouble on the campus Although Dr Stout was upheld by the board of regents the Nevada supreme court later reversed their decision and ordered Rich ardson reinstated Since that time there have been a number of charges that Dr Stout was The latest charge came in ebruary when Dr A Jacobson a sociology professor accused the president of dictatorial policies and said that he should be re moved for the good of the uni versity Regents of of 521 Sinclair St was cited for a right of way violation Thursday follow ing a minor accident at Stewart and Center Sts Police said Mrs 1947 Chrysler sedan involved in an accident with a 1953 Plymouth station wagon driven by Richard Williamson 35 of 411 Grand Can yon Blvd 'Neither vehicle was badly dam aged as a result of the accident As a letter the $25000 for a thorough inves tigation of added took a lot of guts to write He said that in his opinion the investigation is be ing made to benefit the legisla ture The regents now know what is going on at the univer sity he said and the commission needs information to make a re port to the legislature Lattin Angered by Letter Sen Ralph Lattin of Churchill County said that the letter made him The com mission was delegated to choose the survey team he said and are duty bound to do the job and do it Assemblyman Gary Adams of Reno moved to confirm the ap pointment of McHenry as chair man of a group to probe the university Assemblyman Bruce Barnum of Lyon County second ed the motion Both Sen errell Seevers of Mineral County and Sen Wal ter Whitacre of Lyon County added remarks indicating that they disapproved of letter According to a plan approved by the commission Dr McHenry will name the members of the survey team The commission in dicated that it wanted him to have complete freedom of action It was not immediately known how soon the investigation will get underway The regents are holding a regular meeting today and may indicate a reaction to the decision In a resolution passed In March after Dr let the gambling license of the swank Las Vegas Strip hotel Mr Cahill who gave a deposi tion to the Thunderbird attorneys only after tax commission attor neys had lost a long court argu ment over whether he should testify admitted that he was aware of a $160000 loan made by George Sadlo to hotel president Marion Hicks in 1947 or 1948 when the hotel was opened The tax commission tried to re voke the Thunderbird license last spring because it believed that Hicks and Cliff Jones part owners of the operation had un desirable financial arrangements with underworld figures The tax commission indicated disapproval of Sadlo and Jake Lansky who were said to be holding an disclosed in the hotel Action Criticized William Woodburn and Richard Blakey the attorneys are attempting to show that the tax
