Kines, Tammany leader, recuntiy convicted in the policy rocket case. Washington Merry-Go-Rpund (Continued from Page however, describes as looking "like a little boy caught robbing a bird's nest" upon Wilson's negative decision. Unique Secretary Actually, if Joe Tumulty had edited Mrs. Wilson's book it would have been far more favorable to her and to Tumulty's chief than the one now published. For Tumulty was slavish in his devotion, and never would have permitted his master to be portn yed as hen-pecked and dominated.

History would have been the loser and Mrs. Wilson the gainer by Joe's editing. Newspapermen, who are harshest with any occupant of the White House and all around him, will always, look back on Joe Tumulty as the secretary who handled everything the press, presidential engagements, legislative battles--and did it with unequaled efficiency and goodwill. During the years since Wilson's death, Joe never went back to live in New Jersey, whence he came, has become a fixture in the Capital where he is known as the kindliest of human souls. He has made a fortune and given it away again.

Never has he lost the liberal outlook of his chief. Wilson, knowing this, just before his death sent a letter to James Kerney of The Trenton Times regarding possible candidates for Senator from New Jersey. "I don't think you ought to overlook Tumulty," Wilson wrote, political training has been more varied than that of any other man I know, and who-when he was in the New Jeisey Assembly--proved himself a redoubtable debater. He would make some of the reactionary Senators sit up and take notice of the arrival of modern times and circumstances." A few weeks later Wilson died. And his widow, still nursing her vendetta against the -man who loved her husband most, forbade Kerney to publish the letter in his memoirs on Wilson.

On the night Wilson died, his faithful secretary stood oubide the house in the rain until four in the morning, unadmitted. tnd at the funeral, uninvited, he tal- lowed with the colored sarvtnts in the very rear.
