give the casino a chance to win enough money to meet the rent although most if not all ex perienced gamblers will be sur prised and even startled if this proves to be the case Page and the attorneys for the Stardust assured the tax com mission when the gaming license was being considered that if the rental figure proved to be excessive it would be scaled downward Whatever the final outcome undisclosed (legal) interest in a Nevada gambling casino Tony Cornero has become that person He admits it the Tax Commis sion admits it and the general public knows it are neither favorable nor opposed to license at this time We have an idea the Stardust will operate on a level with most of the other hotels on the strip although it may prove a strain on the power loving Tony to keep within the' Nevada State Tax Commission approved a deal the other day whereby Tony Cornero leased for $500000 a month the new Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas to interests who could get a gamb ling license the action created considerable comment in gam bling and other circles Cornero was refused a gambling license for hims'elf The Las Vegas Re view Journal critical of Gover nor Russell and the tax commis sion on previous occasions had the following to say about the Cor nero ruling: Cornero will never get a gambling license as long as governor of Hon Charles Russell 1954 (before the primary election cam paign) will get a license to operate the Stardust Hotel Russell or no Tony Cornero May 1954 and subsequently will never grant Tony Cornero a gambling Every member of the Nevada Tax Commission stated at one time or another during the past year "But Tony he doan pay no to the governor or the members of his Tax Commission he just goes right on his Stardust And now almost ready to open and will open on schedule "Maybe Tony have any license but going to be op erating the Stardust all right And if you think he be run ning the casino which the Tax Commission said he never could just PRINCETON July In its first coast to coast check ron basic party strength since the 1954 election the Institute finds that the Republican party has made little headway in attracting supporters Despite the fact that President Eisenhower consistently wins out over leading Democratic contend ers in Gallup Poll if the elections were being held today it is likely that the Demo crats would keep control of the House of Representatives To win control recent exper ence indicates that the Republi cans must poll approximately 55 per cent of all votes cast for House candidates outside the Southern states As of today the GOP runs even with the Democratic party in the North or about the same as they did in the 1954 Congressional elec tion when they lost the House Here is what the latest survey based on a carefully constructed cross section of voters shows: A total of 50 per cent of voters outside the South with opinions say they would favo't the Republi can candidate if the Congressional elections were being held in their districts today while 50 per cent say they would favor the Demo cratic candidate This compares with a division of 505 per cent Republican and 495 per eent Democratic in states out side the South last November In conducting its survey the In stitute questioned a cross section of voters in all walks of life farmers white workers factory workers housewives busi ness and professional men and women etc asking this ques tion: "If the elections for Congress were being held today which party would you like to see win in this state the Republican party or the Democratic
