Parade Starts at 10:00 Tomorrow Luncheon Being Held Today Display in Powning Park Civic fraternal school and military units will high light the Armed orces Day parade in downtown Reno tomorrow morning The parade is a part of the weekend observance of the national for Later in the day Powning Park will be the scene of displays of equipment and weapons of the different branches of the service and civil defense organizations eatured displays will be the Air National Guard 86 jet fighter the Nike a radar guided ground to air missile and a USMC survival training display from the Cold Water Battalion at Pickle Meadows Open House At Stead The parade and displays at the State Building are only a part of the activities planned for the weekend of Armed orces Day A combined military open house will be held at Stead AB Sunday af ternoon featuring static displays qf the Air orce and Navy aircraft and other weapons and equipment and both ground and air demon strations by the different branch es of the Armed orces A luncheon will be held this af ternoon at the Riverside Theater Restaurant Vice Admiral Montgomery Commander of Air orce Pacific leet is guest speaker for the luncheon Parade At 10:00 Tire parade will begin at 10 a Saturday at Liberty and Virginia Sts and will proceed down Virginia to ifth The re viewing stand for the estimated half mile line of march will be lo cated on the southeast corner of the Truckee bridge Just before the parade at 9:50 a a squadron of Navy aircraft operating out of allon Naval Air Station will fly over the down town area At 10:10 a 86 jet fighters from Nellis AB will fly over the parade At 10:15 a another Navy squadron and at 10:20 51s from the Nevada Air National Guard at Reno will fly over Six 47s from Stead AB will fly over the area at 10:25 a Most of the aircraft forma tions will make two passes over the parade Included in the parade will be the mass colors the senior mili tary organization in the area the USMC Cold Weather Battalion from Pickle Meadows a Stead AB marching unit and a survival training float the University of Nevada band University of Neva da ROTC marching unit and float Sparks High School band and marching unit Reno High School band and ROTC unit the Reno High School Huskyettes Nevada National Guard units Veterans organizations miscella neous floats the 40 and 8 Ameri can Legion and the Treasury Savings Bond float Other military displays at the State building will include the I SMC the new version of the weasel or snowcat Nevada Air National Guard recruiting and information van the Nave SS irepower which is a display of all types of ammunition ar rayed in the form of a torpedo boat The 421st AAA Battalion (Au tomotive Weapons Mobile) of the Nevada National Guard will have an extensive display of military vehicles their medics will be tnere authorized to recruit one medic for the National Guard Battery of the 421st from allon will have a 40 milimeter anti aircraft gun and crew and tne 55 Quad 50 caliber ma chine gun Civil Defense displays will in clude a Ground Observer Corps tank truck and the Red Cross sta tion wagon and Civil Defense in formation center Chief ing the Armed orces Day parade committee is Col Edward Pine Commanding Officer of the 365th Engineer Group USAR His assistant is Lt Col Robert Reeves Executive Officer of the same group A Holgate of Civil Defense is chairman of thetatic display committee His as sistant is CWO Gerald Weath erford of the Nevada National Guard Sgt Clendening Retires June 1 Detective Sgt Roy Clendening will retire from the Reno police department June 1 Sgt Clendening ends 20 years of service with the force here on that date and is eligible to receive a pension from the city of Reno Widely acquainted throughout this area Sgt Clendening is a prominent member of the Inter national ootprinters Association and was president of the group at one time He served with the Navy during World War 125 in Nevada Are Idled By Truck Strike No Pickets Planned Operations Are At Standstill Business Agent Al Mays of Local 533 of the AL Teamsters Union said yesterday a strike against three major truck lines would throw about 125 Nevada domiciled drivers out of work Local 533 embraces all of Ne 17 counties except Clark and Lincoln About 75 of the affected Ne vada drivers are employed by Pa cific Intermountain Express one of the three truck companies in volved Mays said members of his union would move all freight on terminal docks at 7 am yesterday but would not handle any new ship ments There will be no picketing in the state because Nevada is a receiving rather than shipping center Mays added Wes Johnson Reno manager of PIE said his firm would operate its terminals yesterday and today but would close them down if the strike is not settled by Monday A spokesman for Pacific Motor Transport estimated only one fourth of that Nevada de liveries would be affected since merchandise will be transferred to trains and delivered to receiving points Mays said deliveries of produce milk and" bread would riot be af fected by the walkout He esti mated however that 50 per cent of fuel and gasoline ship ments will be cut Odds are that someone in Reno has a mighty banged up Chrysler automobile Lawrence LaVerne Holm of 140 Wonder St told police yes terday that a Chrysler hubcap was the only evidence left Wed nesday night when a car slammed into his parked 1954 Chevrolet pickup and sent it an estimated 14 feet over the curb into a small tree Mr Holm said the erring car which left immediately after the accident in front of 170 Wonder St must be heavily damaged He said a special heavy duty angle iron bumper on his truck was bent double The first Mr Holm learned of the mishap he told police was when a neighbor telephoned him to ask him if he heard the crash Bicycle Losses Reported Here Theft of two bicycles was re ported to police yesterday James 319 Main St told police his irestone bicycle had been stolen He said it was distinguished by a purple seat and chain guard Mrs Virginia Carter of 1497 Alameda Ave told officers that her bicycle was stolen from the vicinity of a downtown theater Saturday afternoon It was a red Schwinn racer James Ray Shows Some Improvement Condition of James Ray Tono pah highway patrolman who has been hospitalized here since ri day night with severe injuries was slightly improved last night Mr Ray is still in a painful and serious condition but is now tak ing some nourishment Ousted Owners Of Vegas Hotel Get Injunction Hicks and Jones Given Time to Dispose Of Holdings LAS VEGAS May 19 Licensees of the Thunderbird Hotel were granted a temporary injunction today preventing the state tax commission from revok ing the gambling license on June 1 if Marion Hicks and for mer Lt Gov Cliff Jones are not removed from the operation by that date The temporary injunction was granted by District Judge Mer wyn Brown of Winnemucca who set June 10 for arguments on whether it should be made per manent The hearing will be held either at Winnemucca or Reno The licensees of the swank Las Vegas Strip resort hotel sought the injunction on grounds the action was trary and and con trary to the due process of law provision of the 14th Amendment to the federal Constitution The action also asserted the order was "not sup ported by or based upon any sub stantial creditable or admissable iled by Reno Attorney Wil liam Woodburn the action al leged the competi tors would take the busi ness away from the licensees if it was not allowed to operate It alleged also that the owners had a moral obligation to "maintain a steady level of for the more than 500 em ployes The licensees alleged also they had contracted to pay large sums to entertainers and to others after June 1 and that since they cannot legally sue the commission they have no legal ability to recover damages for loss or profit iling the suit in addition to Hicks and Jones who between them own 62 per cent of the stock were the: remaining licensees: James Schuyler Victor Sayre William Deer Harry Bad ger Jack Lane Joe Wells and Scherer Named as defendants were the seven members of the commission These include Gov Charles Rus sell chairman Robert A Allen Park Norman Brown Paul McDermott Walter Larsh and Gordon Lathrop The original ac tion was taken following a series of public hearings during which members found that Hicks and Jones were guilty of permit ting gamblers Jake Lansky and George Sadlo to hold what amounted in their opinion to un disclosed interests in the casino It was the first time the com mission has taken revocation ac tion against a major Nevada gam bling establishment in the eight years the agency has policed the legalized gaming industry There was no regis tration for the voters of Reno who want to cast ballots in the June 7 city election All persons who failed to vote in the 1954 general election and who have not since registered must do so if they are to vote next month It has been esti mated that more than 20000 potential voters in the city will be on the registration rolls by the time the county of fice closes at 5 pm today Persons brawl Early this week police held Everett pending the outcome of the investigation and made an effort to learn who had been re sponsible for the blow that apparently lead to death In dismissing Everett Jensen said that there was no possible way of telling who had been re sponsible for the fatal blow evidence pointed to the fact that there was a free for all brawl with four parties in the April 8 fight Jensen said Three witnesses contacted said that it was impossible to tell who had hit Berber Jensen said and a fourth was not cer tain whether Everett had struck the ill fated railroad employe There was a second brawl on the sidewalk later in which Berber was involved and Everett was not Jensen said Jensen said that he had issued a stern warning to the bar con cerned because it had Bowen postponed sentencing pending a recommendation from probation authorities Traffic Death Toll NearingNewRecord 49 People Killed on Nevada Highways During irst our Mohths of z55 CARSON CITY May 19 (UP) igures released today by John Sullivan state director of vital statistics showed 1955 traffic toll climbed steadily toward an all time record during the first four months of this year Mr Sullivan said 49 lives had been snuffed out on the streets and highways through April 30 com pared toa figure of 38 during the same period in 1954 rrainc aeatns uuring an ui 1954 claimed 154 lives with the months of June and August ac counting for approximately one third of the total An i i a 1 tabulation through May 18 showed the pace was slackening little if any To date 54" motorists have been killed in Nevada accidents this year against 51 traffic deaths in 1954 by May 31 March of this year accounted for nearly half of the total fatal accidents There were 22 deaths during that month com pared to 13 in March 1954 Twelve persons were killed in traffic smashups throughout Ne vada last month The same num ber as was killed in April 1954 ive deaths had been recorded during the first 18 days of this month against a total of 13 dur ing all of May last year By far the most dangerous month on the highways last year was June when 30 lives were lost August claimed the second largest number of lives lost in smashups on Ne highway network 93 was the scene of 10 fatal ac cidents nine occurred on 40 and there were ciht on 395 Mr Sullivan added that high way deaths during the first four months of Bar Patrons Herded Into Back Room By Gunman Sparks police are searching for an armed hoodlum who seemed to disappear into thin air Wednesday night after holding up bar owner Don Cassettari 542 Seventh St and robbing him of $245 The robbery occurred at rank and bar 1042 St at ap proximately 10:45 The bandit flourishing a 32 caliber automatic herded five customers into a back room with the admonition try any hero Bandit Vanishes Mr Cassettari was also forced into the back room after empty ing his cash register Police said the hoodlum disap peared into thin air after leaving the bar He was not noticed by two officers who were patroling the block at the time and it was not known whether or not he had an automobile waiting for him The bandit police said parently knew his Of ficers said he was apparently abandoned here The Stanislaus county office were asked to ascertain why a Turlock woman left her 1947 Lincoln sedan parked unat tended on Reno streets for an un usually long period of time The chief of police of Marys ville was asked to determine why a 1948 raser sedan registered to a resident of his city was aban doned here A 1938 Pontjac sedan belonging to a San rancisco resident was also the subject of inquiry to Cali fornia officials All three cars have been im pounded by local officers pending replies from the California law enforcement agencies Navy Recruiter Enlists Three Three men from this region have enlisted in the Navy within the last ten days it was announced yesterday by the Naval Recruiting Office in the Post Office Building Now undergoing recruit train ing at
