six weeks Police Chief Greeson said the entire force is attending a required school be ling conducted by himself and three BI agents I The end result will be a sharper more efficient police department well trained in the essentials of law enforcement techniques Men who have already had sim ilar training will find the school a refresher course and will have the opportunity to learn new po lice methods that have been de veloped since their last attend ance New officers initially trained by police department instructors will find the school valuable for learning advanced techniques All men are required to attend on their own time the two hour courses a week for the six week training period Daytime ses sions are held from 10 a to noon and evening sessions are scheduled from 7:30 to 9:30 The only class being conducted by Chief Greeson is one in rec ords and report writing as they apply to police depart ment BI agents will conduct classes in note taking and chart draw ing descriptions courtroom de meanor the collection and identi fication of evidence problems connected with prowler and bur glary cases robbery and homi cide investigations procedures in collecting interviews and signed statements public relations and the jurisdiction of various federal agencies including the BI A special feature of the course will come in March when BI officers will set up a mock crime scene for the police students to solve The following day tne evidence collected at the scene will be presented at a mock trial The special course is given by the BI on request of local police departments The first one in Reno was conducted 10 years ago The BI also conducts occa sional special schools at the re quest of the police department These special schools include training tin firearms photo graphy fingerprinting and other phases of police work Gertrude Kozuch Taken by Death Mrs Gertrude Kozuch a resi dent of Las Vegas who was visit ing in Reno this week died Wed nesday in a local hospital after a short illness Mrs Kozuch had been living in the southern Nevada city with her daughter Mrs Bachmann uneral arrangements which have not been announced will be handled by the Rogers Co Lydon into a car oc cupied by members of the John Hill family at a roadblock near Tonopah Hill was awarded $500 his Wife Delia $1000 and his daugh ter Patsy Dell $5000 Mrs Hill suffered scalp wounds and the girl suffered leg wounds as a re sult of the shooting Lydon Nye county Sheriff Henry Thomas and the state of Nevada which bonded the offi cers were defendants Lydon and Thomas claimed that the Hill car failed to come to a halt at a roadblock set up to apprehend a fleeing criminal Hill however contended he slowed down but did not stop be cause there was no indication a police roadblock had been set up An area 30 to 40 miles wide would be affected by radiation and dangerous for four to five days he said Prevailing winds probably would sweep the radio active dust inland from either of the Reno police arrested 410 sons last month The persons who paraded through the city jail during Jan uary incuded a murderer three robbers 11 burglars eight larcen ists two auto thieves two forgers and two persons charged with ag gravated assault The bulk of persons who ran afoul of the law however were offenders caught in routine mis demeanors Police Chief Greeson reported that 265 per sons were arrested for drunken ness and vagrancy alone The murderer of course was Donald Anderson the Cotati Calif bank robber who shot and killed his partner Ronald Barker on New Day He was con victed of
