II Election fever at the Cale Royal The Cafe Royal Bar. the West End's newest meeting place, opened at Trust House Forte's Famous banqueting and reataurant centre in Regent Street. London on Monday. April 30. during the final count down period to the General Election.

Mar, has been completely refurbished and redecorated in a major redevelopment programme. Reflecting the traditional elegance of the Cafe Royal, the bar's decor is in brown, beige and gold with comfortable chairs in brocade, chandeliers, a redesigned bar counter and a new food preparation area. To mark the occasion. the new bar will be offering a special Election Cocktail on Thursday, May 3. Created by the Cafe Royal's head barman.

David Creig. the cocktail will consist of ingredients in equal measure in the colours of the three major parties. As the results are mombored on television in the bar during the evening. the amount of each individual colour will either increase or decrease according to how the political pendulum swings. The Cafe Royal Bar, formerly known as Bobby's A new range of cocktails, all pre fixed with Royal, will be available, together with a fine selection of Malt whiskies, traditional bitter and draught lager.

A substantial buffet will offer a variety of hot and cold meals, including traditional steak and kidney pudding, shepherd's pie, goulash and Chef's Choice, and numerous salads. Another innovation at the Cafe Royal is the introduction of a set price three course menu costing £7.50 (which includes both VAT and Kensington's top businessmen looked eagerly for tips on how to get to the top at the April luncheon of the Kensington and Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, held last week at the Royal Garden Hotel. This new menu will be a regular lunch time feature of Rela's, one of London's finest French restaurants and part of the complex at Trust House Forte's famous Cafe "Trancon de Barbue Roil au Four Souce aux (a cut of brill grilled and served with Anchovy sauce), "Cote de Veau Gratinee D'Artinany" (breadcrumbed veal shop cooked in butter with a slice of veal brain, topped with a sauce of onions, lemon juice, parsley, Muscat and cream, sprinkled with breadcrumbs, baked and garnished with a pastry case filled with asparagus tips), traditional roast beef from the trolley, and a seasonal dish of the day.

These will be served with either a selection of vegetables or a mixed salad. To follow, there is a selection of sweets from the buffet or a choice of traditional French and English cheese, together with either coffee or tea. Royal. Reflecting the restuarant's French character, the 12 to 2.30 p.m. menu will offer a selection of six starters.

five main dishes and a variety of sweets. Ainong the hors d'oeuvres are "Assiette de Charcuterie" (a selection of charcuterie prepared from the buffet), "Crepe de Saumon Fume Gratinee (a pancake filled with smoked salmon, finished with Parmesan cheese, lightly grilled) and "Terrine de Foie de Volaille (a rich chicken liver pate served with toast). Heray. Diners at the Royal Roof Restaurant can dance the night away to the music of the resident band or be serenaded at their tables by the Royal Roof International Violins, while enjoying a view across I Aindon A bistro brimming with life It was the evening of the Boat Race, the crowds that had filled Putney during the day had dispersed and this riverside suburb had once more assumed its tranquility. Yet, beneath this calm exterior Putney is rapidly developing a nightlife. What started two or three years ago as a Fulham overflow has now taken on a character all of its own. Bistros and winebars are springing up around the Lower Richmond Road and around the back of the High Street.

A recent addition to this swirl of activity is Gavins on Lacey Road where I and a companion had the pleasure of dining some six hours after Oxford and Cambridge had dropped anchor. It was fortunate that we had reserved our table because the restaurant was running at full ca pact crating an atniosphere of continuous animation. This is a bistro without pretension, splendidly crowded, joyously noisy and disarmingly friendly. The menu, though limited. is well thought out and should satisfy most inclinations.

We started with the Stilton Soup a regional speciality of and the rather more familiar potted shnmps. We found the soup both excellent and unusual and very gently priced at 50p. The shrimps came in a generous portion with an abundance of fresh, hot toast (fly There was just a hint of Oregano in the Mexican Chicken M. 951 and a rather more pronounced dash of garlic. The chicken was served off the bone on a bed of rice.

It was nicely presented and made an appetising main mum My companion tried Carbonade of Beef (aim) which consisted of tender slices of beef braised in a rich stock with wine and herbs. The portion was gargantuan and my companion might easily have had trouble finishing it all by himself. As it was, my appetite was ample for both of us and I was able to sample aggressively from both or our plates For vegetables we had spinach and potatoes, all fresh and well prepared Oilier main course possibilities included roast leg of lamb 2 10) and Stuffed Fillets of Plaice with curry sauce (12 IS). The desert trolley was well. laden with a selection of homemade puddings including Upside down Pudding which I tricil, enjoyed very much and thought that it looked the right way up! Tarts and gateaux are varied regularly, so try what ever takes your fancy.

With our meal we drank Cotes du Rhone (L 355 which was good value. They also serve house wine by the bottle at £2.25 and by the glass at 45p. Since Gavins is a bistro where one would choose to linger after the meal, consuming vast quantities of liqueurs, it is probably best to row or swim to Putney lindge and foot it from there. If, however, you do come on four wheels there is plenty of parking space near the restaurant. ahran I ant I( kwi restaurant 115 Westbourne Grove Bayswater 2 Reservations 727 OPEN 7 DAYS 12 noon 2 a.m.
