She won't be riding sidesaddle in a full or divided skirt nor for that matter will her outfit be even as formal as the hunting outfits worn by the ladies who follow the hounds But a lady she is nevertheless in spite of the tight-fitting colorful shirts and pants which she wears while turning flips on or hanging upside down from her horse Her clothes are symbolic of 1 her one which women folks don't often cotton to for themselves and choose to follow trade of trick horseback i riding But being a trick rider agrees I mightily with this little lady of the rodeo and when she's off her horse and through with the 1 day's chares of tending him she's all ami a gra- cious one at that Her name is'Wanda Rossi and 1 she's the distaff half of a hus- -band-wife team which probably accounts for the womanly duties she performs when not in the spotlight of the rodeo for wives even those who hold down full-time jobs have a way of accumulating an assortment of chores which somehow their unmarried sister career girls seem to be able to avoid to some degree or other Sewing is one of the housewifely chores performed by Mrs Rossi in bkween shows and when one says she knows how to ply a needle one doesn't have to look far for the proof In addition to making many of her own street clothes she designs and makes all her costumes as well as those of her husband And that's a pretty tall order for in addition to being extremely colorful their costumes must withstand the rigors of wear and tear to which ordinary riding clothes are not subjected and the materials with which Mrs Rossi must work in order to get the most mileage out of each costume are far from the most pleasant ones with which to work But luckily she's undaunted by stiff stiff cords heavy gabardines and crawling satin Making small talk is another womanly attribute of Mrs Rosa and it's perhaps in this area that she happily excels to the point that her lady-like qualities really claim attention Few people have such beautiful speaking voices as Mrs Rossi who Is a perfect delight to regardless of what she is saying But the fact that she is an interesting possessing a wide range of subject material as well as having mastered the art of doing her share of the is even more to her credit Low pitched laughs not nervous but just full of the exuberance of being alive-punctuate her conversation and listeners soon find themselves deciding it must be News Under The Sun Hove! and through her skills and accomplishments won fame and recognition but in spite of having something to toot about were she the type to blow her own horn she's completely unaffected giving warm direct answers to all questions addressed even about famous people like Jane Powell and Natalie Wood for whom she's stood in as their stunt girl in and even Elizabeth Taylor for whom Mrs Rossi's renowned husband the steeplechase jumps in "National Of course the easiest subject to get Wanda Rossi to talk about is her husband and running a close second are the other two males in her John her pal amiao quarterhorse and Apache her husband's and the love for riding which she and her husband share Rex who is proficient at fancy horse catches and at rope and bull whip tricks taught Wanda trick riding: but she was already an accomplished equestrienne having been exposed to horses since early childhood at the New Mexico ranch of her grandfather who raised them In fact so accomplished was this young horsewoman that for five years straight she won the Powder Puff Derby at Aqua alien te competing against other girl jockeys and she was subsequently given the title of Girl Jockey Champion of the West Coast and granted special permission to race against male jockeys But it was while working as a stunt girl in movies that she met her future husband whose background in movie and television stunt work is similar to her oust having appeared in and "Sunset Strip" Rex however was born a showman coming from seven generations of show people all of whom featured horses in their acts His wife proudly relates that he was born the so to in a Wild West Show in which his pop was appearing in Greenville Ky He was in Tomessee the next day she says and has been going ever since At the tender age of four Rex was trick riding and roping and that's where his heart is confides his wife Like his wife Rex has come into contact with many famous people many for whom he has served as stunt man and many like Gene Autry with whom he has toured His palomino Apache claims his share of fame too having been riddot by Gene Barry in 13 episodes of Bat Master son and by Dale Robertson who usually calls for him when he leaves his own Jubilee at home But Rex's Apache which he raised on a bottle from a colt and Wanda's John are far from just pretty intelligent show horses Wanda recounts that horses like these both of which are geldings are scarce Probably there is only one in 5000 with the right temperament to become a trick horse she says for they must be very spirited with lots of life yet calm enough to be steady and remain still while ropes are spinning around them They must have a lot of heart too says the trick riding charmer who tells that for them like every true performer the show must go on Regardless of sore muscles the horses must run like crazy at foil speed and she laughingly tells that she and Rex perform regardless of the inevitable bumps and bruises and sometimes more serious injuries like cracked ribs broken feet and dislocated shoulders which beset them While not too many married couples are on the rodeo circuit Wanda whose husband courted her on and off horseback for 12 years before tying the knot confides that it's really handy when injuries occur fra- then there's someone who knows what it's all about to commiserate with Of course not all the benefits derived from
