A group of Gatesville youth golfers study their putts on the green of the third hole at the Gatesville Country Club Friday. By JUSTIN RAINS Messenger Sports Editor Jake Truss knows a little something about winning. After all, the soon-to-be Gatesville High School junior played on the 2009 state champion Hornet golf team.

During his freshman season, the team finished fourth in the state. So it was no surprise to Truss when he won the first leg of the 2009 Allen Samuels Junior Golf Tour last Wednesday at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco. "I know if I play like 1 should, 1 should have a pretty good chance to win," he said. Truss shot a two-over-par 74 for his 1 8-hole round en route to winning the 15-18 year-old: division. However, if Jake isn't careful, he may soon be the second best youth golfer in the family.

His younger brother Jett, a 1 0-year-old playing in the 11- and 1 2-year-old division of the same tournament, shot a 41 over nine holes to win his age group. It was the first title of his young career. "It felt pretty good," Jett said, sitting in the Gatesville Country Club clubhouse in between holes. "It was tough, but I felt like I played pretty good. I was hitting my drive pretty good." Jett credits Jake for helping him with his game and teaching him the ropes of golf.

Ac? 9 "He's helped me out a lot and helps me play better and encourages me," Jett said. But, Jett's not the only young golfer around the Gatesville course that Jake helps. Other youths said Jake is the same with them, including 12-year-old Bryce Cole. "He teaches me what to hit and how to hit it," Cole said of the elder Truss. Jett spends a lot of time on the golf course perfecting his game, a hobby he says he began as early as age 3.

The middle linebacker and quarterback said, despite his love for other sports like football and baseball, golf is his favorite past time. "I just enjoy being out here," he said. i v. i Photo by Justin Rains On in two Jett Truss watches as his ball Hies toward the green Friday at the Gatesville Country Club. Truss, who won the 1 1 and 1 2-year-old division of the Allen Samuels Junior Golf Tour at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, plays at the country club almost daily now that summer has arrived.

Future Hornets For Jake, he's simply returning a favor extended to him by helping the young golfers. He recalled how he and a group of friends similar to the group Jett plays with used to always get tips from the older players when they were younger. That group turned out to form a large part of this season's Gatesville golf team. "They're future Hornets and it's nice seeing them play together," Jake said. Jett said he hopes the comparison between his group of friends and Jake's keeps going into high school, and ends with a state championship of his own.

"That's one of my goals for my life," he said. "To win a state championship." Upcoming Events Registration is underway for the adult slow pitch softball league sponsored by the City of Gatesville. Recreation director Sam Cockrell set June 20 as the deadline for teams to sign up for this year's league. Cost is $250 for women's teams and $300 for men's team. The men's team registration includes the cost of the pre-sea-son seeding tournament, which will start around the first of July.
