deductible The senator also paid $350 to Pennsylvania National Life Insurance in Harrisburg Pa which bought each of his employees $10000 in life insurance Hill said The Faircloth campaign deducted a total of $6100 from employee paychecks and put it into retirement funds His full-time campaign staff illustrates the high cost of running a Senate campaign said Josh Goldstein of the Center for Responsive Politics a nonprofit group that studies campaign finances reflects the need for a US Senator to continuously raise he said Goldstein had no problem with Faircloth offering his employee business-like benefits The campaign also paid for disability insurance until October when Faircloth began to trim costs said Hill At that point the campaign also laid off Katherine Davis who had been the treasurer According to year-end disclosures filed with the FEC annual salary would have been about $16000 Hill who is paid about $42000 a year and travels with Faircloth whenever he campaigns took over the job The office secretary Kelly Ennis makes about $14000 a year according to the disclosure form William Soule who handles phone solicitations makes about $24000 a year By ELLEN SILBERMAN States News Service WASHINGTON Most campaigns are like traveling road shows with volunteers running in and out of the office and consultants raising and spending most of the cash But Sen Lauch Faircloth is running his campaign organization like a small business campaign has three full-time employees who get health benefits life insurance and pay into a retirement fund They spend most of their time paying off 1992 campaign debt not different we just disclose said Jonathan Hill the treasurer But other campaigns are different According to the disclosure form Sen Jesse Helms filed with the Federal Election Commission in the middle of last year he only had one employee on campaign payroll and listed no employee benefit payments Helms generally makes most of his payments to consultants for Senate pay said Hill who explained that the checks to consultants listed on year-end FEC form were debt payments for their work in 1992 At the end of 1993 the Faircloth campaign still had $950000 in debt Hill acknowledged that he expected to hire consultants again as 1998 re-election bid gets into full swing During 1993 Faircloth paid $8900 to Joint Insurance Escrow homemaker She Baptist Church cemetery Mrs Lipscomb is survived by a grandson MRS CLAIRE MOORE Mrs Claire Cozart Moore of 1822-C Elm St Greensboro died Wednesday Feb 9 in Moses Cone Memorial Hospital Mrs Moore was a native of Creedmoor attended Creed-moor schools and moved to Durham as a child She attended Martha Washington College in Fredericksburg Va and was a graduate of Duke University In 1944 Mrs Moore moved to Ellington Mo where she lived until she moved to Greensboro in 1979 A memorial service will be conducted at 1 pm Saturday at the Howerton Bryan Funeral Home chapel by the Rev Gray Southern Mrs Moore is survived by two sisters Mrs Jaxie Cozart Pease of Greensboro and Mrs Anne Cozart Serrell of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews Instead of flowers memorials may be made to Trinity United Chapel Hill DR REED RICE CHAPEL HILL Dr Reed Rice 63 died Wednesday Feb 9 at his home Dr Rice was a native of Indianapolis He was a graduate of DePauw University and Indiana Medical Center Dr Rice served his internship at Case Western Reserve Medical Center in Cleveland and did his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minn He was a former staff member of UNC Hospitals and was employed by Duke University for 28 years as a radiologist Dr Rice was a member of University Presbyterian Church A memorial service will be Faircloth lone dissenter against new FDIC chief MR JEREMY DUKE BURLINGTON Mr Jeremy Christian Francis Duke 21 of 3412 Longview Drive died Wednesday Feb 9 in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after several months of declining health Mr Duke was a native of Colorado Springs Colo and was a 1991 graduate of Williams High School He was a former student at Appalachian State University and was involved in the college marching band and student orientation He was a volunteer disc jockey for the ASU radio station Mr Duke was enrolled as a sociology major at Elon College He was a member of Holly Hill Baptist Church The funeral will be conducted at 3 pm Sunday in Holly Hill Baptist Church by the Rev Steve Hardy Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park Mr Duke is survived by his parents Ron and Cindy Hoffmann Duke of the home a sister Miss Shannon Colleen Duke
