The Durham Sun Saturday November 26 1960 to be used ns additional Courthouse parking facilities Ono of Durham's older landmarks still standing is the old building located nt the comer of Fast Main and Courthouse may lie located there Just as these five landmarks hove stood in prominence during the years so will they go for each of them will be succeeded by constructions which will have roles 'of importance in Durham's future as their forerunners have had in her Sun Staff Photos by Cooper Text by Wilson Morgan the landmarks are famous old homes all located on Duke Street which were the pride of the city in their heyday They are the old Watts home (upper left) the Moreheod home (upper right) and the Duke home (lower right) Two buildings also will share the passing from the local landscape West Chapel Hill Streets) by what reportedly will be a nine-story office building to cost $5000000 Hie Duke home nt present serves as the guest house for Duke University Although the demolition of the old building now housing the Welfare Department (located at the southeast comer of the Courthouse) is not foreseen in the immediate future it is said to be approaching the end of its existence Present plans call for the site of the building formerly a part of the old Lochmoor Hotel eventually DURHAM LANDMARKS TO COME DOWN-Durham like the entire area surrounding her is growing along with the rest of the South" and with growth come changes Perhaps most acutely aware of the changes on the local -scene which already have been wrought and which will come In the near future are those who have seen the city grow for a number of years For to them many parts of Durham's older features have become landmarks Some of these which soon will give way to the Durham of tomorrow are shown above in the panel of suggestions you'll receive If possible get a copy of the January 1960 "Credit Union Bridge" This contains helpful hints on budgeting and how to get the most from your food shelter clothing medical and credit dollar Be sure to get on the list for next year's issue In some areas credit unions sponsor money management classes They are for the whole family distressed on hearing the word mortician? I sympathize deeply with all unhappy people who suffer terribly each day as they take care of a child whose little brain never developed perfectly or of a child who has seizures or as some may prefer to say "dysrhythmia in his electroencephalogram" or a mythical low blood sugar Actually in this column I am concerned not only with lessening the mental suffering of an occasional individual I am greatly concerned with doing something to lessen the great distress of the few million Americans who suffer from feeblemindedness epilepsy psychosis or insanity I have been scolded for using the word insanity but that is the proper legal term for the disease of a psychotic person who has had to he committed My feeling is that since we all of us are going to keep hearing the words that displease us we might as all of us-toughen up and get used to them Why do I believe In using the proper words for a disease and not some subterfuge and why do I want people to get over being so angry and hurt when they hear the word they have come to hate? Because I lived through some of the many years in which we doctors could do almost nothing to reduce the high incidence of (tuberculosis) because people did not want to hear that thcn-very-common disease mentioned Also I want people to get used to unpleasant words because I lived through the years when no Army medical officer could beg the public to help him to reduce the distressingly high inf-cidence of incapacitating venereal disease in the Armed Forces In that day no Editor in the land was permitted to mention the word syphilis in his newspaper As a result no health officer could protest to the families id soldiers about the encampments full of diseased women which were built up and maintained right outside the gate of an Army post Only when a dread disease is dragged out into the light of day only when our people can be made to see the great seriousness of a problem like that of polio or tuberculosis only when we stop "sweeping the problem under the rug" and only when our fine big-hearted people come to see how they can do their bit to wipe the disease off the face of the earth do they cone to us doctors with understanding help money and perhaps a willingness to put some needed pressure on the legislators to institute reforms So please good people forgive me if at times I hurt you Only as all of us cone to face facts bravely will we be able to wipe out the diseases that still curse our humanity As long as we hide the truth our children will have to go on suffering Dr Alvarez' booklet on heart trouble may be obtained by sending 25 cents and a large stamped self-addressed envelope with your request to Dr Walter CL Alvarez The Durham Sun By WALTER ALVAREZ MI) Emeritus Consultant In Medicine Mayo Clinic Every so often I get a letter sometimes a very bitter and angry from soneone who accuses me of having deliberately hurt her by using in my column some ordinary word for a disease a word which scars her like a hot iron Why? Because for years she has watched her Aivarrs child suffering from this disease Her accusation distresses me because 1 wax brought up by two gentle my father and my who always in our home spoke with kindliness and courtesy Perhaps as a result all my life I have been much averse to hurting anyone If I do keep using in this column the good old English names for three or four dread diseases I have a reason for doing it I am not doing it from ignorance or ill will Some 60 years ago my father an able physician used to say to me that If a woman brought in her epileptic child for treatment and the words epilepsy or fits were mentioned she would leave hurt and angry and would not rome back Hence already in that early day wise physicians told the mother as many do today that the disease certainly wasn't epilepsy and it wasn't hereditary: it was just seizures or muscle spasms or fainting spells "When the girl grew up she could marry and have as many children as she wanted to they said Today a physician who sees a child with a severe epilepsy may tell the mother that it is all due to a low blood sugar and then she loves him for this evasion of the truth Why do I say evasion? Because at Mayo's the neurologists looked for a low blood sugar in over 2000 cases of people with seizures and failed to find a case My father used to go on and tell me that Hippocrates the Greek "Father of who wrote about 450 BC had similar troubles But because he was a brave man with strong principles and because he deeply resented the way in which the public then regarded epilepsy as a specially bad disease in which a god struck the person down or a demon entered into he kept talking about the trouble struggling always to get people to see that its is no different from any other disease: It is due to some little thing gone wrong in the brain and a god or a demon has nothing to do with it Some persons who write me to complain but who do it with calm and urbanity say that I ought never to use the common words: always I should use substitutes of recent origin These people are like those many who having once gone through the great sorrow 6f burying an adored child never again want to hear the word "undertaker" They find relief in always saying mortician Now I wonder what new word they will use when everyone is FlSORi BRUSH ON ADHESIVE Vinyl though higher priced has become quite popular It's tough bright and shiny and is available in more patterns than the others There are some that even simulate wood granite or terrazzo But if you are planning a basement installation make certain that the vinyl tiles you pick are alkaline resistant Most vinyl tile is solid vinyl all the way through and can be used anywhere In sheet form the vinyl is often merely on the surface with another material backing it up Vinyl-asbestos tile has a coating of clear plastic has a hard surface that wears well It's a compromise between asphalt and vinyl Whatever tile you pick be sure to buy the adhesive recommended for that tile This too has changed While the trowel-applied adhesive is still around there are others that can be painted on with a brush The adhesive is allowed to dry until it is tacky then the tile is applied If the concrete floor is smooth no underlay of felt material is necessary This is generally used on wood floors before tile is applied If there are any cracks or holes in the floor they should be patched and leveled Chances are have to do the job yourself But if you are aware of the resources in your community you might find sane excellent help Moving into the personal money counselling field are credit unions In some areas there are programs currently training money management counsellors In a few areas such trained people are already at work At most credit unions an interview with the treasurer can provide answers to many problems If you belong to a credit un communicable disease nursing and mental health and psychiatric nursing As in the present program nurses will be given a broad academic background in the liberal arts coupled with depth in nursing specialties The curriculum is equally divided between general education and professional courses Candidates for the baccalaureate degree in nursing must take all core courses in addition to their professional specialties The demand for even the limited offering at NCC is seen in that nurses come from 13 southern states and several outside the South Many are fi-anced on annual title I trainee-ship grants to the college of from seven to eight thousand dollars An additional grant in the amount requested would increase both staff and curriculum offerings in public health nursing at NCC According to Mrs Miller new teachers would be employed In specialized areas only The present staff consists of three persons Mrs Miller chairman Mrs Dorothy Holder who is assigned to the NCC staff by the Public Health Service of the United States and Dr Charles Cameron who works on a part time basis on loan from the school of Public Health at the University of North Carolina By MR FIX Written for NEA If you never go any further than tiling the floor of your basement you'll have done much to make it comfortable warm and clean With modem basements of poured concrete or cement blocks a tile job and a coat of paint will give you extra space on a budget Doing the job is simple enough it's picking the right floor cover that may cause some concern Until a few years ago there was no problem There was no choice either If you wanted to put tile on a concrete floor that was at or below grade you were limited to asphalt tile And the asphalt tile was pretty limited in color and design Moisture in the soil mixes with the alkaline salts in concrete and destroys many floor coverings But add to the list of tile types that are alkaline resistant in addition to asphalt are vinyl-asbestos some vinyl tiles and lately even some rubber tiles In addition asphalt tiles are available in a wider range of colors and patterns than before At slightly higher cost (asphalt is the cheapest of the tiles) you can purchase greaseproof asphalt tile Some asphalt tile can be ruined by grease and oil An "emergency" conference took place at North Carolina College last week with prospects of salvaging and expanding a unique program that may affect the health of thousands of people throughout the South It was the visit by three top level experts in the field of public health in response to a plea for a grant of $175000 to expand the program of public health nursing at NCC Last week's visitors reflect the concern and interest of the United States Department of Health Education and Welfare which sent the three representatives to Durham Visitors included Dr Elmer Hill Chief of the Traineeship Unit of the Public Health Service Miss Jane Murray adviser of Title II Traineeship Public Health Service 'and Mis a Marian Sheahan deputy general of the National League for Nursing The importance of this visit can be seen in the fact that the program at North Carolina College is the only one available in the entire South to nurses seeking specialized and or graduate nursing training It is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Although there are several colleges and hospitals offering "basic" nursing (without college degrees attached in the South the one at NCC is design When I interviewed the research director at the credit union headquarters in my town I inquired into the chief trouble spots causing people to seek help They are: High cost of food Inadequate provision for meeting medical care bills Inability to budget and plan spending We also get people overcommitted in their borrowing He told me this often happens when a bonus is received or drastic merchandise reductions are advertised A family will ed for comprehensive training of nurses seeking degrees and specialist ratings Graduates become eligible as teachers in colleges and other types of institutional programs and as specialists for hospital work Mrs Helen Morse Miller chairman of the department of public health nursing at NCC says the present program at the college "seeks to strengthen the background of registered nurses so that they will be able to perform at a higher level in whatever areas of nursing they choose to pursue" Implicit in Mrs Miller's remarks is the fact that the opportunity for such up-grading is not available to Negro nurses elsewhere in the South Until NCC's program was inaugurated in 1949 nurses desiring advanced training had to leave the area Even now many of them must do so since the limited program at NCC is devoted to public health nursing alone The purpose of last week's meeting was to find means of remedying this situation If the NCC proposal receives favorable consideration the present program will be expanded to include training in comprehensive nursing rehabilitation and long term illesses medical and surgical nursing set forth intending to spend a certain amount the cadi they carry High pressure salesmanship and their own gullibility leads them into selecting more expensive merchandise paid for under costly credit terms If you don't belong to a credit union can you get budget advice? Working as aggressively as the credit unions is the AFL-CIO through its community activities centers Currently in 40 areas consumer information courses are in full swing with emphasis on food planning Credit Unions Cited For Possible Advice On Budget Problems planning for medical care offering suggestions on how to invest how to buy insurance and such The AFL-CIO also maintains consumer clinics where you can get guidance on a host of money problems Bankers tell me they are getting more queries regarding budgets too Said one: "Our questions come from two groups of people those having trouble living on fixed incomes and younger folk convinced their earnings will not rise fast enough to meet the rising costs of education food and clothing" By FAYE HENLE Into my hands the other day a friend thrust a sheet of paper yellowed at the edges Printed at the top was "Budget for This budget had been prepared for her in the depression days of the 1930s by a department store She wanted to know who could update it tor her It was the late Elise Staple-ton well known budget counsellor who had prepared the sheet Are there any Elise Stapletons In business today? Where could I send my friend? If you'd like a budget drawn by an expert wbece could you go? I I.
