Vic Seixas of Philadelphia playing in his last Davis Cup challenge round match saved the United States from a shutout defeat today when he outlasted Mai Anderson 6 3 4 6 6 3 0 6 13 11 in near 100 degree heat Ashley Cooper played Barry MacKay of Dayton Ohio in the final singles match The Aussies clinched the cup yesterday when they won the doubles match for a 3 0 lead Before playing Anderson Seixas announced is my last Davis Cup appearance got a job waiting for me when I return to the United States next In addition to the scorching heat high winds of up to 50 miles per hour blew across the Kooyong Stadium center court during the final day matches The Aussies had blanked the 5 0 in each of the last two challenge rounds and hoped to complete another sweep today but Seixas spoiled Commission announced today that Philadelphia Broadcast Co Inc had filed the first ap plication for starting pay as you see television test broad cast The company said it already has signed a contract to tele vise the Philadelphia pro basketball games on a pay basis and is negotiating similar pacts with the Philadelphia Eagles pro football team and some colleges The company holds an CC construction permit but its sta tion is not yet on the air The station WES would operate on channel 29 on an ultra high frequency The CC announced last Oc tober 29 that it would accept ap plications for the protective measures now being enforced by American boxing commissions' The no fatality mark was registered despite the reopen ing of no television fight clubs in many areas and de spite outpoint Ralph (Tiger) Jones again tonight and stretch his unbeaten string to 14 straight bouts ighting before a sell out crowd of 3551 at the Miami Beach Auditorium Giardello of Brooklyn beat Jones of St Albans more impressively than in their first bout in 1954 when Giardello had to be con tent with a split 10 round unanimous Giardello the scored the only knockdown of the bout when he dropped Jones to one knee with a left right combination to the jaw in the third round The Tiger was up at the count of two and took the mandatory eight count on his feet Giardello ranked fourth among contenders weighed 15914 pounds to 15714 as he tagged Ralph with his fourth straight defeat The three ring officials vot ing on a 10 point must basis fa vored Giardello as follows: ref eree Jimmy Peerless 97 93 judge Gus Jacobson 97 94 and Judge Stu Winston 98 92 Giardello 27 suffered a bad cut inside his lower lip in the second round and he dripped blood throughout the bout Twenty nine year
