race with Russia The bottom stage of the three stage rocket erupted sec onds after the firing button was pushed and months of preparation including two long ended in billows of orange flame and failure Paul Walsh deputy Van guard director told reporters at a briefing later that the thrust of the first stage loaded with liquid oxygen failed The 72 foot missile toppled eastward and exploded demolishing the first and second stage To Continue Dr John Hagen chief of the Vanguard project said in Washington that this of an individual of the missile will not prevent the satellite program from continuing on schedule Walsh said the Vanguard rose four feet off its launching pad before it collapsed and ex ploded instead of carrying the tiny satellite an estimated 300 miles into space to put it into orbit around the earth No one was injured in the ex plosion Hagen described as the publicity the launching re ceived He said he felt person ally that it should have been treated as a test and not so much but declined to say who in the administra tion decided in favor of the oth er course Hagen said the failure was mechanical not a failure of de sign He said he believed it was a failure of the nose of the third stage was undam aged It continued transmitting its radio signal after the explo sion he said Walsh said the countdown had proceeded smoothly al though it was held up for three
