Herald-Sun The Federal Aviation Administration expects to decide within a few days whether to oppose one of proposed landfill sites But the site is located far enough away from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport that the agency would probably not get involved in fighting its possible selection an FAA spokeswoman in Atlanta said Thursday The site located off Stone Road north of Research Triangle Park is slightly more than five miles from RDU and airport director John Brantley said in February that he considered the site unsafe and wanted the federal agency to evaluate it Landfills often attract birds particularly seagulls That has caused some accidents around other airports if a landfill is more than five miles from the airport we have no formal sole in the landfill siting said Arlene Salac a spokeswoman with the southern regional office this landfill site is just a little bit more than five miles so we're recommending it be operated in a manner to reduce the potential for attracting The agency has not yet made the recommendation formally Ms Salac said but that would be the normal procedure under the circumstances A landfill may not be located within two miles of an airport and the FAA has authority to comment on sites within a five-mile radius from the airport which it generally considers the minimum safe distance for a landfill Last year the city scratched two sites in southern Durham from its list of sites after the FAA opposed them and in January it dropped another site after the city discovered it was within five miles of the Person Area Briefs Volunteer
