Edmund Brown riday an nounced purchase by the state of 2000 acres of prime recrea tion land for a park at Sugar Pine Point on the west shore of Lake Tahoe The land cost $83 million The purchase agreement be tween the state and owner Mrs Esther Ehrman Lazard of San rancisco was quickly approved at a special meeting by the Board of Public Works unds for the purchase which Brown said was less than the appraised value of the acreage came from the $150 Choice Lake Tahoe Land for State Park million beaches and parks bond issue approved by the voters last year Brown long an advocate of preserving the sparkling Lake Tahoe region from overdevel opment called the acquisition of the most important new park developments in Cal The property approved for purchase by the first special session of the 1965 Legislature included 15 miles of beach front and extended west about 3 miles along General Creek The area is in El Dorado County between Tahoma and Meeks Bay It also included a large three story turreted mansion and rec reation facilities Brown told the board he would ask the Department of Parks and Recreation to open the property temporarily next summer for piclmickers Brown said he would ask the budget session of the legisla ture in ebruary to provide funds for initial development He said the first permanent camping facilities were planned for 1968 five year plan is to pro vide 200 overnight camping units 200 picnic units and park ing for 200 cars at the he said 15 year development plan calls for a total of 1000 camping units 10 large group camps and 500 picnic units ull development could add 200 more campsites for a total of Mears Attorneys Seek to Prove Mental Weakness An attempt to prove that James Bonsall Mears is men tally incapable and was begun riday afternoon as the defense opened its case in the three day old murder trial Mears 39 is accused of the fatal shooting of Sparks bar tender Howard Clifford Haw thorne during a March 20 hold up attempt at the Greenbrae shopping center in Sparks Cite Surgery Defense attorneys Leslie Mack ry and Robert Herz contend that Mears whom they called an epileptic is mentally incom petent They said Mears under went a crainiectomy (surgery bn the skull) in Washington sev eral years ago The defense called four wit nesses to show alleged mental deficiences Washoe County Deputy Sher iff Lee Warmack told the court he found Mears lying on his cell floor shaking on June 22 Warmack who put a stick in mouth during the attack said he was incoherent for ten minutes Deputy Peter McCaskey pre sented jail records indicating Mears has slashed himself twice while in jail On July 3 he said Mears was taken to Washoe Medical Center after slashing his wrists On Oct 19 he added Mears again tried suicide by slashing his ankles Another deputy Lou Wid man testified he had applied compresses to both of wrists and summoned an am bulance on July 3 Widman told the prosecution he did not know if the wounds were deep or su perficial Undersheriff Richard testified he found Mears lying on his eell bunk in a rigid po sition on June 2 said Mears had bitten a pencil in half and appeared to be inco herent Prosecution Rests The prosecution rested its case riday morning by calling the last of nine witnesses An escape attempt by Mears from the Washoe County Jail was told by Deputy Sheriff Er nest Schwarz Schwarz said he believed Mears subsequent col lapse was staged to feign epilep sy On Wednesday the opening day of testimony seven wit nesses were called by the prose cution Mrs Louise Hawthorne widow of the murdered man testified a shot hit and killed her hus band as they were standing in a crowd outside the Super Store in Sparks Store employes told of seeing a bandit inside the store and seeing or hearing the shot that killed Hawthorne Mears was identified by Sparks police officer Gordon Jenkins as a man he chased wildly through the streets of Sparks after Jenkins accidental ly came upon the scene while off duty Jenkins said the fugitive es caped capture when two chil dren walked between him and the suspect The bandit escaped in a car later found abandoned in Sparks Mears and his wife were ar rested about an hour later in their trailer at 2601 Prater Way Mrs Mears was later released after charges of complicity were dropped The trial will resume Monday at 10 am The Defense is ex pected to call more witnesses to testify on mental con dition Contractor Backs Probe Of Highway Department Gazette Journal Carson City Bureau A Drumm Jr a contractor In Nevada for 45 years riday said he supports the move to impanel a grand jury to investigate handling of claims and contracts by the Ne vada Highway Department "If a grand jury is impaneled I will request to voluntarily testify as a citizen and road builder I will welcome a sub poena to appear and give testi Drumm said feel it is the duty of every person interested in government honesty and responsibility to come forth when his time to make a contribution to good government is at Drumm president of Silver State Construction Company of allon also took issue with a statement by Rowland Oakes executive secretary of the As sociation of General Contractors in Nevada He said: the record and as a founding member of the Asso ciation of General Contractors in Nevada I must strongly ob ject to the statement of Mr Rowland Catholic Church in a daring raid on the Vatican library Vatican officials said the two manuscripts were The two relics were worth about $500000 they said The thieves apparently clam bered up a drain
