appraisal last week: of gambling in the United States pub lished last week treated Nevada much more kindly than I had ex pected In fact(the magazine' com plimented Nevada on the way we handle gambling in this state by making itlegal and taxing it heavily to support state govern ment and our school systems Life saw only one weakness in the Ne vada gambling setup one which probably every person with money invested in Nevada gambling paladiums has thought of many times and that is the possibilities involved in legalizing of gambling by other states mostly California If the bulk of gambling tourists no longer needed to leave their home states and come to Ne vada to gamble both Life and Ne vada gamblers are aware of what would happen to the industry in this state gambling was legalized in very state there would probably be a lot less gambling in the coun try as a whole Many of the peo ple who come to Nevada gamble because it is something which they have been prohibited from doing at home and the thrill of risking their money on a legal game of chance is something new and fas cinating to them If the wheels of chance the dice and the cards were in front of them every day On a state level it is expected that Gov Vail Pittman will file his declaration with the secretary of state when he gets back from the conference There have been no announcements dur ing the week of other guberna torial candidates on either ticket but anything can happen before July 17 Plenty of rumors are afloat but they are about as au thentic as the weather outlook of the last few days Sen Pat McCarran will be in Las Vegas for the ourth of July celebration a probably will come to Reno for a few days be fore returning to Washington if Congress still is in session Hands Off Attitude To Be Adopted By Governor WASHINGTON June 24 Most supporters of Richard Nixon GOP Senate nominee were disappointed today at Gov Earl attitude toward his campaign But only a few actually were surprised Warren said at the governors conference Jn Wh i Sulphur Springs Va that he will not campaign with Nixon He ducked when asked if he will endorse him Both Nixon and his Democratic Rep Helen Gahagan Douglas has "no comment" on statements Mrs Doug las smiled when she said it One California Republican went so far as to say state ments were stupidest made since he said in 1948 at Phil adelphia that the 80th Congress' made some tragic Another recalled that Gov rank LausChe of Ohio a Demo crat said he decided who he would vote for in his Senate race between Sen Robert A Taft and Democratic State Auditor Joseph 'erguson he said state ment was worse Lausche at least said both Ohio candidates were good No one thought there was the slightest doubt as to which way Warren would mark his own bal lot Some Republicans point to the fact that Sen William Knowland Cal who came to the Senate as a Warren appointee has announced he will campaign for Nixon Warren always has conducted campaign One Re publican said his involvement in the Senate race might lead all other state GOP candidates to so licit help supporters here vary in their estimate of what stand may mean to their candi date None yet who gamble now would soon lose interest in the games of chance "One thing that the Life article did disclose and that ls the tie up between Nevada gam Ming in Reno and Las Vegas for the most part and the big time gambling bosses of the country It seems to me that if we are going to try to keep gambling Rose clean we are going to have to guard against making thls state a haven of refuge for all the big time operators hr the United States most of whom are looked upon as criminals irf their owm bailiwicks "It is one thing to have legal gambling supervised and taxed by the stitfe and kept on a strictly up and up' basis and another thing to be looked upon by 47 other states as a place where all the big shotcriminals and racket eers can hide out until the heat is off in their own states a big shot gambler from somd other state where gambling is il legal wants to come to Nevada and set up sin the gambling busi ness okey just so long as he is clean insofar as other rackets are concerned the
