BRITISH MUSHROOM CULTIVATION CO. (Dept. 4), 126.L0ng Acre, Covent Garden, London. W.C.2 BRITISH SPAWN FOR BRITISH GROWERS COSTUME Three Weeks of Historic Colbert in Classic C. Fields Scores Heavily By R.

3. WHITLEY, 1 HAVE often complained that the ways of the film chiefs are weird and wonderful, but they are excelling themselves in respect of their method of showing three great costume films. That live wire of the exhibiting world, Mr. Sidney L. Bernstein, points out to me that for three consecutive weeks commencing August 27 the big picture release will be a costume film having for its central character a queen or an empress On August 27 Elizabeth Bergner in Catherine the Great starts its rounds of the local cinemas.

Vary the Fare It will be followed at many of the same cinemas during the following week by Greta Garbo in Queen Christina." On the following Monday I'll wager that many of the same cinemas will be showing Marlene Dietrich in The Scarlet Empress." Obviously these three pictures are of the type which no self-respect- Claudette Colbert and Walter Connolly In a a great comedy, at ti ing cinema proprietor can afford to miss showing, but is it good showmanship not to vary the fare by creating an interval between the showing of these similar types of spectacular productions Jew Suss ff In London this cycle of costume plays will probably clash with Jew Suss at the Tivoli, this spectacular production from Shepherd's Bush being due to be shown in the early days of September. Fortunately, it will be generally released much later. I gather from Arthur Jarratt, Gaumont-British theatre chief, that it will not be shown at the local cinemas until next January. Camera Artistry Two film classics cf totally different types have been shown this week. "It Happened One Night is a great screen comedy, in which Frank Capra's masterly production touches stand out like a beacon fire.

Claudette Colbert seems to improve with every picture, her voice is ideal for talkies, while Clark Gable gives the best performance of his career. Man of Aran is an epic of camera artistry, and a triumph for that past-master of unusual pictures, Robert Flaherty. It is a film which is going to cause much controversy. It has no story except the natural ally Mirror Film Critic drama of the struggle for existence of the inhabitants of a rocky waste off the west coast of Ireland. There is no romantic love interest, but perhaps the absence of this standard boxoffice essential will be compensated for by the dramatic shark hunt and terrific storm, in which three men risk their lives in a frail canoe.

Men of Aran deserves to succeed because of its grim realism and novelty, but I have an idea it is a picture appealing primarily to men. I strongly recommend it to all who like unusual screen fare. Delightful Comedy Film I have not enjoyed a film so much for a long time as I cid It Happened One Night," a really delightful comedy-drama featuring Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable, which opens at the Tivoli to-morrow. It is the work of Frank Capra, one of the real production artists of to-day, who tells a good human story of vedding scene from It Happened One Night." Tivoli to-morrow. two stubborn young people, very much in love but both too pigheaded to admit it.

Peter gallantly hangs a blanket as a partition the Walls of Jericho assures her she is safe until Joshua blows his trumpet. Meanwhile, Ellie's millionaire father (Walter Connolly) has offered a reward of £2,000 for news of his runaway daughter, who, by the way, has made a marry in haste repent at leisure wedding with King Westley (Jameson Thomas).
