ORAL ROBERTS UNIVERSITY hon lost no time in making ita presence felt on the collegiate sports scene. Only seven years old, Oral Roberts ia already well-heeled in athleten, evidence of this being the phenomenal record the Titana have compiled in four sports during the school year, just completed, "Ran-ketball, baseball, tennis and golf teams have been 104 times while losing only 28. There's no doubt that OR's basketball team was one of the nation's top surprises, the Titans finishing with a scintillating 26-1 mark. They finished the regular season at 25-1, netting an all-time scoring record of 105.9 points per game and leading the nation in rebounding. They went to the quarter-finals of National Invitational Tournament The OR tennis team finished 31-6, golf 14-2 and baseball 33-18.

In the forefront of Oral success En baseball was Cumberland chucker Jack Cheney, voted as the team's Most Valuable Player. The former Fnrt Hill High lefty had an 8-1 record in his junior year and a 1.26 earned-run average. Hia three-year career record is 24-5. Another Allegany-County athlete, Gary Marple, formerly of Bruce and Allegany Community College, also had a hand in helping the Titan baseball team. Gary, who played third base, finished the season with a .264 batting average and knocked in 24 runs.

After of this success, guess what they're eaying at Oral Roberts. "Wait 'til next year!" Strange but true and here's why The baskebtall team, for instance, returns four of its first six players and Tvill be bringing up top talent from the freshman squad. Herb Dallis, who coached at Allegany Community College before going to OR, will have no less than three MVPs back in hanehalL In addition to Cheney, they are outfielders, Greg Davis and Rich Rozck. And Herb, too, reportedly has some freshman whizzes. The tennis team is anticipating the return of Japanese ace Kiyo Tanabe who dropped out of school for a year to play the Far East circuit in hopes of making Nippon's Davis Cup team.

Tanabe lost only one match last year while playing No. 2 for OR. Brightening the golf picture is the fact that Dave Barr, No. 1 player both as a freshman and eopnomore, will be back swinging again next year. With records like upcoming recruiting chores of the various coaches at Oral Roberts should be a snap.

SPORTS KEG RESIDUE For years the claim has been made that Bill Criswell is a matrimonial coward. That no Irmger applies. The former popular local sportscastcr got married March 18 to a Texas girl lie had met in Europe two years ago, Criswell, incidentally, is sports-information director at Southern Illinois University, a schoo! with tm enrollment of nver 23,000. Bill also finds time to do radio and TV shows at CarboniUle, III. One of the oldiwt records in bowling, Skang MercuriVe feat of averaging 238 for an entire league season, has fallen to Mike Durhin of Chagrin Fails, Ohio.

Dur-bin averaged 238.31 in 102 games this past season at the Bain bridge-Colonial lanes in Chagrin Palls. Durbin, 31, ia the house pro at that center. Tom-my VanOrmer. one of the top young golfers at the Cumberland Country Club, helped the Juniata Col lege team compile an outstanding record this spring. Tommy is the son of Dr.

and Mrs VY A VanOrmer, 7-17 Washington Street. Four Baltimore Oriole players have amassed 11 "gold gloves" over the past three seasons. A gold glove annually goes to the player adjudged beat at his position in the league by a vote of managers and coaches. Third baseman Brooks Robinson has won 12 straight gloves, second baseman Dave Johnson and center fielder Paul Blair three straight and shortstop Mark Belanger two in the past three American league seasons. Paf.

Patterson, one of the nation's top bowlers, recently succumbed from the effects of a stroke he suffered last December. Patterson, 46, was a member of the ZEern Antique team of the late 1940s that included Don Carter, Ray Bliith and Tom Hen-nessey. Pat had four 800s and 11 perfect games during his brilliant career and last year was on the ABC of Fame ballot for the first time Cum brand's Nick (Spunk) Perlozzo has lost his 'job in the minors as a result of the baseball strike. Spunk who had been looking forward to hia third year in the San Diego chain, was cut loose, along with a number of other Padre farmhands. There's not a team in the majors that hasn't felt the financial of the strike and as a a result most of them are cutting corners with their farm clubs.
