As far as human impulses are concerned, spring is for sowing, autumn is for reaping.

And one of the most gratifying gardening experiences of all the four seasons is to discover the first tiny green stalks pushing through the soil when the fuzz consists of lettuce or radishes which rarely if ever fail. But if one sows, so also must one thin this tries the gardener because it involes taking out perfectly healthy little seedlings to give proper growing room and sufficient food to the others. Observe Rules There are a few general rules about planting seed which may be observed. First, course, is to have top soil in good condition: fertile, well raked and, usually, conditioned to a point which is neither strongly alkaline nor strongly acid. Secondly, most seed should be planted about twice as deep as the seed is wide, tn cases of very fine like poppy, snapdragon, portu- laca it should merely be sprinkled on the surface and gently pressed into contact with the loam.

It is easy enough to plant larger seeds with proper spaces between them: spreading out tiny seed is harder. One way to i nsure proper planting of these is to shake the packet of seed with four or six parts of clean, dry sand and sow the result. Less Transplanting In any event, the less transplanting necessary, the less setback a seeding will have to go through, and moving a seedling from one position to another does interrupt the growing process. Transplanting of and this applies to seedling tomatoes as well as to young oak not so much a matter of luck as it is a matter of taking pains. Plants, to flourish and even to survive, need soil in which to put out their roots, water and food.

Heavy clay soil withholds some of these, and very light sand can not hold some of the others. The gardener must remedy and improve soil conditions and this involves, among other things, digging, orte activity which has not at this reading been replaced by miracle chemicals. Young Tree If you have a young tree, I arrived from a nursery in a burlap-wrapped ball of earth, provide a good growing place for it. Dig a hole, in the first place, larger than the tree's ball of earth, and deeper than you think it need be. Work over the soil you have removed if it is good enough.

If not, re- I place it with better soil. Dig carefully, too, the soij which will be below the roots. Don't plant too deep, nor yet too shallow. And give the young plant plenty of water during the difficult period which follows when it is adjusting to a new situation. Work Fast Where you are transplanting material with bare roots, the trick is to work fast, because the tiny hairs which are the feeding roots of seedlings dry fast when in contact with air jand are sometimes killed.

In transplanting seedlings, always have a place ready to receive them, try to move them with some protective earth around the perhaps most important, dig them out carefully and deeply so that the root system is intact, not ripped or torn. Then protect them I against hot sunshine and give them plenty of water for time. "Lucky" gardeners who seem to be able to transplant anything almost any time really are the least lazy gardeners. And taking pains may really be what we mean when we talk about a green thumb. GREATEST BY MAIL OFFER!
