Mother To Many While little Melanie waits at the Children's Home nursery in Greensboro for a real mother to adopt her Mother's Day will not be completely amiss Mrs Sarah Lowe head nurse at the home is foster mother to the child just as she has been to some 1200 infants she has cared for since 1944 (AP Wirephoto) and during their short stay with us we try to see that they receive it" The infants usually arrive at the nursery shortly after birth Som come from broken tomes some are orphaned some are born out of wedlock To Mrs Lowe it makes no difference "For one thing I don't know anything about their backgrounds and I'm not sure but that it's the best way To me each is simply a baby who needs a home While the child is in our care here we try to provide a she says "Most of the babies are well regulated by the time they go into homes at about two and a half months of age A number of mothers have told me they are mighty good babies probably because they do receive such good care "When the new parents come to take their child home we have a list of instructions formula and that sort of thing It has to be all written down because they're so excited about the baby that they'd forget any instructions" she explains Mrs Lowe admits to mixed feelings when the children leave her care even though I know I'll miss the baby for awhile I have the satisfaction of knowing someone has given a home to a child who wants a The nursery has quarters for about 20 babies Lately the demand has far outweighed the supply "Melanie will be leaving us and Mrs Lowe points to a healthy chubby butterball of a girl "We try to give them unusual names while they are with us so when someone speaks of Melanie or Carlos or Sherry then we know exactly which baby they are talking Mrs Lowe notes "Sometimes they come back to see me when they are older The twins came back not too long ago one set that is And the mothers and fathers always want to ace the crib in which their child slept while 'with us How does it feel to have been even if for only a few months with each baby a foster-mother to about 1200 infants who have been placed in homes throughout North Carolina? "You describe such a feellig she says and is quick to point out that she is but one cog in the machine which gives each child a home "Sometimes we place a child right around Mother's Day Usually it is just a coincidence but it seems such a wonderful time of the year to have a housewife become a mother Mrs Lowe says And what does foster-mother Lowe do after a day in the nursery? Studied By WFC Faculty Re-Establishment' Effort Is Guided By 6-Man Council WAKE FOREST May 12-Wake Forest College faculty members have approved a policy report which may lead to reestablishment of the college's graduate program They also have elected a six-man Graduate Council which will guide the college's efforts to meet a series of requirements the report said are necessary before Wake Forest begins offering the master's degree again The report part of an extensive faculty self-study program begun two years ago at the suggestion of President Harold Tribble puts an annual price tag of $179485 for initial re-establishment of gifcd-uate work and says that strength ening the College's undergraduate schools and library is a necessary first step The overall self-study already has resulted in a revised curriculum aimed at strengthening the college's liberal arts program and its admissions requirements The Wake Forest faculty suspended master's degree work in May 1950 Post-war enrollment had jammed classrooms considerably increasing the number of students under each teacher and lowering the amount of money spent on each student However Wake Forest was still meeting minimum requirements of standardizing agencies when the decision was made The report stipulates that the Graduate Council be autonomous The first council has just been elected Members are Dr Elton Cocke Dr Emmett Hamrick Dr John Nowell Dr A Reid Dr Henry Snuggs and Dr Henry Stroupe President Tribble said he felt report indicates in a realistic manner the path we should take in resuming master's degree
